anyone tried the Roccat Ryos with Brown? I have one and decided to return it...

its seems every lound, plus lack of multimedia keys, won't adjust volume if a game is running...

clear, all the joys of browns but a bit more stiff (iirc 65n of force for clears over 40n of force for browns)

This. I have a MAX keyboard w/ Browns. While I can't say that I dislike the keyboard, the Browns are a little soft for me. I am pretty sure I will like the Clears a lot more. I need to find someone who makes a backlit clear first, and then order it...and I am having trouble justifying it right now.

i have only been able to use MX red, and browns out of the two, i like reds more than the browns. i could be biased not using the browns for very long though.

I love the clicky blues. Tried the reds, didnt like them as time went on.

As someone who doesn't yet own a mechanical keyboard, this thread is great evidence to spend the money on a key sampler. Trying to find one with a majority of the popular cherry keys, in stock, has been somewhat tough this week.

Usually I trust myself to find my preference through the multitude of comments, but with these keys, I don't think I've ever settled on to one type of key for longer than a minute! The variability/customization is great, looking forward to my purchase.

Unfortunately there's nowhere around me where I can
sample them, so it's kind of a stab in the dark.

I don't understand why computers/electronics places removed all the displays where you could test keyboards and mice. I'm looking for a new keyboard and a new mouse, and it sucks that I can't try them out. I was at a local TigerDirect stored the other day and asked about testing gaming mice. The doofus working there said, "Most of them have boxes where you can hold them." <shakes head>

clear with some o-rings = godsend

brown if you don't like it being as stiff

Yea, I'm with you Yippee, I'm also looking for a new kb and mouse. Finding the right one is tough, since they are based so much on personal preference. I think I'm going to use my amazon prime with the free return shipping.

Red with red o-rings for me. Black are a bit too stiff, Brown feel kind of "dirty" in their travel and I hate Blue because the release point is above the actuation point, which I find very uncomfortable in gaming.

Not a bad idea. I didn't know I got free returns with Amazon Prime.

For those who would like to try the different Cherry MX switches, samplers are available at certain vendors such as Max Keyboard or WASD for a reasonable price.

Keep in mind that they will be slightly different from a full keyboard implementation since the way the switches are mounted (PCB-mounted or plate-mounted) and the way the keyboard chassis is built influence the overall feel and sound. They are nonetheless a great way to get a basic feel for the differences between switch types.

I'm having trouble finding the samplers in stock. I've actually only found one in stock, the four key set from Max. I'd like to find the six or eight key, I mine as well try as many as I can.

edit: also, double check on Amazon Prime returns, I remember reading that somewhere but I can't find anything about it right now.

I've had Reds and Browns, both with O-rings. I prefer the Browns for typing, I wouldn't think it'd be much difference, but I make less mistakes with the feedback. Reds are in my current keyboard and probably will be for sometime. It's not a big enough deal for me to switch (Had Browns on loan from a friend for over a year).

I just got the Corsair K95 RGB with reds, and not 100% sure if I like them..... reds feel extremely soft.

Had Roccat with browns before, and it was rather loud... so blues are of question.

I went with Brown on my Ducky Shine 3 (which I love BTW), and added WASD's red o-rings. I'm very happy with the keyboard both for gaming and typing.

I have reds and blues, both with o-rings under the keys.. the reds are nice because they are quiet with the o-rings.. the blues are taking some getting used to but I am liking them more than more. The blues really need those o-rings imo - too much clicky clacky without them.

If that was directed at me, right, but I like the o-ring cushion for my blues for sure. :)

It's more of a general statement in regards to Cherry MX and noise.

Clicky switches aside, no Cherry MX is louder than another. The noise is the by-product of bottoming out when using the keyboard and nothing to do with the switch mechanism in itself. So when someone says they dislike a non-clicky MX switch because it is noisy, it's more to do with the way the person uses the keyboard than the keyboard/type of switch itself. That being said, there is nothing wrong with liking to bottom out in itself.

Gotcha... seems like my blues have a definite click sound when the switch is activated then yes, when you bottom out on top of that (without the o-rings) it makes a lot of noise... I swear I can't hear the "click" sound of my reds but now my interest is peaked so I will have closer listen to them tonight. :)

The linear don't click, but they can clack! Don't forget about the dreaded ping that can appear on all Cherry MX as well, haha.

That said, it can be hard not bottoming out when gaming; I prefer dirt-cheap orthodontics bands, can get 200+ for a buck or two (free if you have braces, haha), they're really soft on landings and they last quite long (running on one set that's nearly 2 years old now and no sign of cracking or drying out).

Yeah, it is definitely harder not to bottom out when playing than when typing on Cherry MX.

Do they taste like snozberries?

I love my Cherry's but with the little o-rings on the Blue's are really growing on me.. the little clickiness is kind of ok now.

Personally I love red for gaming.
I don't find tactile switches (blue, green, clear, etc) great for gaming - it's really hard to double tap and do things like that
.

imo,
linear switches are horrible for anything and everything. i don't understand how they're any good for "gaming" when you can barely tell when you're actuating the switch
browns are too light and not bumpy enough.
blues are alright overall, but too loud

Nothing quite like running your fingers over a black cherry for the first time. Nice tight action but they usually require being greased up first.

is this a porn site?

You didn't get the memo this morning, did you? :(

As for keyboards, I'm really leaning towards MX Browns since I like the idea of having the tactile bump, but no loud click. Anyone that is a heavy gamer that prefers tactile without the click and has experience with both: do you like Browns or Clears better for a gaming keyboard?

Clear switched are pretty elusive, but I have found a whole two places that can custom-make me a keyboard with the red backlighting I require and either Browns or Clears. Not going to be cheap - about $200-220 not including shipping.

I have browns and like them a lot but would like a bit more of a tactile feel without the Rube-Goldberg-clickiness of the blues (and greens). My next keyboard will have clears or some variant (e.g. ergo or panda). I wouldn't consider any other MX keyswitch than the ones I've listed here. I'd sooner go for a Unicomp buckling spring keyboard than MX blues. I do like buckling springs but they are probably too loud - I live with other people and use my computer very late at night. (Other) people used to complain about the volume of my typing on old IBM buckling spring keyboards. Buckling spring can work for gaming, but I would agree with the general concensus that blues/greens are not so good for gaming.

To me, very little tactile feel (e.g. black and red) = mushy keys that feel no better than a membrane KB. They will still be more predictable and precise than a membrane keyboard, but I don't personally care for the feel.

that's like saying a mouse that doesn't have 5 side buttons aren't good for gaming.
afaik the only place where linear switches are better for gaming are those where you need to repeatedly activate a key (like >5 times a second). while that can be important for some games, that doesnt generalize to saying that blues are not so good...

the actuation and reset are offset slightly... but at the same time you can argue that the actuation and reset points are more well defined in the force curve

I'm saying it because blues are imprecise by design. I call them Rube Goldberg machines because they have a thing that presses a thing that presses the switch, and the feeling you get does not coincide with the actual press of the switch. If you like gaming with them, that is your decision, but the buckling spring has equal or better tactile feel, much better precision and repeatability, and the feeling you get coincides nearly exactly with the switch itself actually being pressed. It is a significantly better design that is not surpassed in ANY way by the MX blues. Even MX browns/clears have tactile feel at a different time than the keyswitch activation, but at least they are not Rube Goldberg machines and are thus much more precise and repeatable.

I agree with you that there is little to no point to going for linear reds/blacks for gaming, though. I would say they hold absolutely no advantage over browns. Some people would disagree, of course.

Where's the MX Clear option? :)

I voted blues, super noisy but an absolute joy to type on.
