My dad keeps having computer problems and I think it all stems from my brother getting on all these shady porn sites. I am going over tonight to reinstall windows and I was thinking XP had parental controls to help block that stuff. And are there any good, free programs that would also help?

Untangle is a very good option.

BTW, can the computer be put in a public location in your home? How computer literate is your brother?

Just recommend him some quality sites so he doesn't have to go on shady ones :p

Again, how computer literate is your brother? I would suggest OpenDNS as a third party DNS server. . . which will block content. . .

+1 to this :)

Anyway, OpenDNS would be a cheap and best bet for this option. Since your bro is computer challenged, no way he'll figure out a way around OpenDNS short of replacing the router.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. You might be surprised what your brother can do when you take this away from him.

Does your dad not want him looking at porn on his computer?? It IS your dad's computer right??

If he wants to 'lock it down' (which is his prerogative since it's his machine) install K9 Web Protection.... works VERY well, and it's free.

If your dad could care less, and just hates all the garbage, tell your brother to smarten up and think before he 'clicks' :)

Guys, if they're sharing a computer, chances are they don't have a spare PC sitting around to put Untangle/OpenDNS on it.

OpenDNS is amazing. You just edit the DNS settings on the local machine or the router.

Probably after the fact....but if you head over there again....I recommend setting them up with OpenDNS....kicking on the content blocking, and entering OpenDNS servers in their routers DNS settings. If you enter OpenDNS manually on their PC, they can more easily figure that out, or using some TCP/Winsock repair utility would wipe that out. OpenDNS is free, has hardly any performance hit (depending on the performance of their ISPs DNS servers..some actually report a gain in performance). It also gives you some protection from known malware sites..automatically blocking them. I use this service for everyone.

If you rebuild their computer...make sure it has all windows updates

Encourage them to use Firefox as their browser, install FF for them, set as default browser, and install the AdBlock plugin.

Install Spybot S&D, update and immunize... free, and no performance hit.

Install SpywareBlaster, update and protect...free, and no performance hit.

Install SuperAntispyware, update, free, medium performance hit if you have the real time protection enabled.

Install a good antivirus, AntiVir is one of the best, it's free, and one of the lowest performance hits of any AV out there.

True, but you can find old pcs for dirt freakin chip now a days. A local craigslist search pulled up some dell power 1550s for $25 (I nabbed one) and some basic p3 towersin the $50-100 price range.

OpenDNS

It's free. You register at their site for a free account and you tell them your IP. You then go into the router or your PC if no router, and input OpenDNS's DNS servers in. OpenDNS then filters the DNS lookups and blocks whatever you want which you set via your account at their site.

Side benefit, OpenDNS has the best DNS servers hands down.

^ yeah because thats not overkill

why do people post such overkill for an easy thing.

IE7 allows Content Filtering. NetNanny is $50 bucks and will update and block everything you tell it too. OpenDNS is free and will take care of everything you need it too.

Setup with OpenDNS either on Router or Local machine, and configure IE7 for the Content Filtering, also make the user account a Limited User so they cant install stuff.

Put a Antivirus program spend the 29 bucks for Nod32, and install Malware Bytes for cleanup to have them run.

Or if they work around that, just by NetNanny. I have used that on a few computers for kids and works great and you dont have to keep modifying blocked sites.

Because we ALL know that what he needs is a PE R200, with Untangle, running a proxy, full malware scans, etc etc, another PE R200 running Server 2008, so they can run a domain, limit the account via GPO through AD, and purchase the add-on to integrate Untangle with AD. I thought you knew what you were doing Marley. . .

Wrong he needs a 12-core router with 16gb of ram because nothing else can handle his 20mb connection (I kid, I kid)

I was thinking more of a J6350 service router with a NetEnforcer AC-2500 in a high availability configuration.

:p
