Blizzard to ONLY make MMOG's

from shacknews.com ;)

A potentially huge Blizzard rumor has been making its way around the internet over the last day or so. According to F13, Blizzard parent corporation Vivendi Universal gave a financial presentation in which the following statement was made: "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOs." Presumably, this would refer to StarCraft and Diablo, the company's remaining two non-MMO megalithic franchises, and not its classic properties such as The Lost Vikings, Blackthorne, and Rock 'n Roll Racing.

However, when asked by Shacknews to comment on the alleged statement, a senior publicist from Vivendi said simply, "That's the first I've heard of it." After being referred to developer Blizzard, Shacknews received a similar response. Furthermore, the corporate websites of neither Vivendi Universal nor game division VU Games contain no indication that any sort of shareholder meeting or press conference was scheduled for today. Until any further announcements are made, consider this a rumor and nothing more.

I love when people say that. Thats obviously far from the truth, just become some really talented people left, doesn't mean more talented people didn't come in. Do you really think that theres this defined group of talent out there, and that there cannot be anyone more than that group defined? YOU nor ANYONE can't argue that there isn't any talent at blizzard. They currently have the most sucessful MMORPG ever created, they have over 6 million people playing @ over 50% of the market share, 50%!!! People won't buy a crappy product, its obvious that WoW is a great game, and continues to be a great game almost 2 years after the game released.

You let one crappy raiding guild ruin it for you, good for you.

Don't feel sorry for me, or anyone for that matter. People can make their own dicisions about how to spend their time.

I also love when a disclaimer like this is posted. You pretty much trashed the game and the company, but you think the game is great? Wow I feel I'm watching John Kerry, pick your stand, and stick with it.

They're not going anywhere, anytime soon.

And BTW that source that this "info" came from isn't very reliable.

I should rephrase that first part, all the original talent that made Blizzard is gone. People like Bill Roper. The current team is good, but no originality. Nothing new to MMO games except for ease of use and warcraft theme.

How is raiding any different in another guild? We did Ragnaros in ~3-5 hours without a wipe. The guild was pretty damn good. All the people in the guild who played 24/7 got all the items because of DKP. Raiding instances just suck, period.

I didn't just trash the game. It is great. High level instance RAIDING is what I'm trashing. No change of stance there.

And finally, I said goodbye blizzard not because the company will tank. (that'll probably never happen in my lifetime.) But IF they do make all their games MMOs they will be dead to me.

That's not what they said at all. If you read it carefully, it just says that they will be making an MMO based off of each of their franchises. It doesn't mean that they won't make other genres too.

Has anyone heard of not beating a dead horse? How many times is someone going to bring up reading comprehension in this thread?

I dont understand why people are not willing to pay a monthly fee. Look at it in terms of the money you are spending to the gameplay time. Having added up all the time played and the money i have spent i am paying less than 25 cents and hour to play, and that is what i consider casual play time of 10-20 hours a week sometimes mroe sometimes less.

If i go buy a book and read it it cost more per hour, movies, dinner, ha night at bar can run me 10 dollars or more an hour.

Doesnt make sense to me why you would not pay to play for a game when it is so cheap on comparison to other entertianment. This of course is dependent o you enjoying the game :D

barren chat is the deepest pit of hell

Please don't compare the value of books to WOW. I don't think you'll ever see a class being taught on the merits of PWNING OMG. And I'd much, much rather go out to dinner with my gf, or go out to a bar with my buddies than sit at home playing WOW. I don't have time to play games consistently throughout the week because of work and school. When I play, I want to be able to sit down and have fun for a short period of time. WOW does not give me that. Ive heard from a lot of people that WOW is great, and that they've spent countless hours playing it. Well I play games enough as it is. I don't want to waste more of my time on them AND pay a monthly fee to do it. I'd rather play CS:S online with my friends for free.

Because when you go to the bar, or out for dinner, your not paying $50-$80 to get in the door + food / drinks and such afterwards.

Sure - charge for ranked servers or something - BUT let people run their own servers as well - dont cut people off from doing that for free - since THEN people are NOT using blizzards bandwidth and servers - they are using their own.

All the talented people at Blizzard left anyways.

WoW high end content sucks ass, or any MMO for that matter. Lets get 40 people to do a 5 hour instance, and only 5% of the people will get any items!!!! woohoo!!! Main reason why I quit WoW. If most of the people in the raid didn't get shafted it would be at least decent. I was in a raiding guild for 9 months and I didn't get a single item because I couldn't live my life in the game. The amount of DKP the higher ups had was completely rediculous, any normal person could not play that much.

I'm willing to pay a monthly fee, but damn raiding in WoW is one of the worst things to come to gaming. Unless of course you like to waste time like that, then I just feel sorry for you.

Don't get me wrong, WoW is a GREAT game. But once you hit 60 and move on to the big raids its all downhill from there.

Goodbye Blizzard, it was nice knowin ya.
It's actually pretty easy to get epics in a *good* raiding guild. In a month you should get at least 1-2 epics... if you're in a really good guild and you play alot, you can be wearing full purple in 4 months easily. Nine months with no epics? Seriously bad guild...

this just isn't true. if blizzard didn't say it, it's still a rumor.

You do at theme parks.

The MMO model works, it keeps businesses profitable and gamers happy with lots of content.

Though I agree with what ur trying to say, the analogy doesnt really work. Sometimes you do get charged at the door, and at a nice restaurant you will usually pay valet 30-50 bucks, dinner will be 200+ and drinks are 10-15 each. That however, is an expense that is justified for me for the company, the hot women, and the good environment. Videogames dont do that for me.

The MMO model works for a very few select titles. WOW's and Everquests are few and far between. They cost way more to develop, and have a maintenance fee associated with server upkeep. There is a reason that every game developer isn't making and MMO, and that reason isn't soley design decision. Many simply cannot afford to take the loss. Sinking $50 million (expect this figure to grow dramatically) and 4.5 years for a game like WOW is not something many can do. And imagine if the game turns out poorly and doesn't sell so much.

pakotlar i am comparing the cost of enjoyment. I love to read and buy several books a month, what i was getting at is that at the cost of each past time, the per hour cost is cheaper with pay to play. Thats all. You can argue books are a better pastime if you want but that is personal opinion and not everyone will agree. I'm simply saying pay to play is not expensive when compared to other forms of entertianment and to me it seems silly to use that as a reason to not play a game you would otherwise enjoy. Obviously if you do not enjoy the style of the game this does not concern you. It could be any MMO not just WoW.

Again i'm just looking at the how much it cost and comparing it to other things. No matter how you slice it pay to play is cheap when compared to most other entertainment.

MMO != monthly fees

Edit: the only way to compare a subscription fee such as WOW (e-crack) is by the pricing of real crack off of the streets.

It can cost upwards of hundreds to thousands of dollars to support a full-time crack habbit for a month, so WOW is a steal.

I dont care if WOW is the next coming of Jesus, or the equivalent of a shot of heroin at boot up, I am never paying a monthly fee for my games. Ever.

Word.

The day I *have* pay a monthly fee to play games is the day I quit gaming. I will play the UT, BF, and C&C series for free over and over way before I pay a monthly fee. Long live the deadly sin of greed...... Battlefield is getting very close with its "booster packs" - I guess its just inevitable for someone to go straight to pure monthly fees.

I am a gamer.

I play games that are fun.

World of Warcraft is fun.

Therefore I play World of Warcraft.

My monthly payment is exchanged for services provided.

A persistant game universe.
Server hardware and personnel to monitor such equipment.
GMs and customer service agents to assist me through various issues.

I don't have this silly idea that mmorpgs on the scale of wow should be free.
Payment for servers, personnel, etc are not gonna come from box sales alone.

The movie industry does this all the time.

Don't forget, it doesn't even have to be multiplayer. I could envision a subscription model that works with an standard game (say Crysis) that adds new content and game features every month.

Most of the original team that created Starcraft is not there anymore. So if they ever did make an SC2, it might be not be that great.

Name a blizzard game that wasn't good. It will be great. Thats what they said about WCIII and that game was and is awsome. I have full confidence in Blizzard. Personally I think Blizzard has more talent now then they did before. I look at WoW and the story, content graphics the whole package is brilliant. I'm more interested in the WoW world than any other Blizzard world there has been.

WoW has actually saved me money, gaming. Instead of buying some crappy FPS every month, like BF2 *cringe* I am still playing WoW, with a monthly fee which is 1/3-1/4 the cost of a new game.

P.S. Seelenlos ... I need a healthstone :D

"Good" is subjective. I personally was no fan of Warcraft III, too much RPG and babysitting your hero early in the game. The small unit battles and largely unimproved unit tree made it more of a group RPG than an RTS.

And blizzard certainly has their share of totaly mediocre and forgetable games.
Norse by Norse-west, Battle Chess II: Chinese chess and Death and Return of Superman do not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Starcraft or Warcraft.

What you mean to say is, since Warcraft II, Blizzard has focused their development on the three successful games they did make and done so very effectively for 10 years now.

As for making everything an MMO, I can understand the financial reasons to put out an MMO in each of their 3 major franchieses. Even if they end up being nothing more than new skins on WoW, suckers will buy them en mass.
What I don't want to see happen is Blizzard become an MMO only company. If they don't keep working the single player aspect of games they will lose my money for sure. Which is a shame for me because Starcraft and Warcarft are some of my favorite franchises.

Rock and Roll racing, and lost vikings were some pretty sweet games

I hate WOW from the standpoint that it sucks the life away from people and its a pointless game (IMHO). You cant hate them for making a game that makes 60 million a year, runs fairly well, revolutionary graphics/world detail for a MMO, and overall a good game in terms of design.

Blizzard makes killer games, but the games are based on the taste of the people playing them. I know plenty of WoW players that hate Diablo II and just the opposite.

lol cracks me up, that sums up just about every good game out there

Draax you to can have a rare 1320 all for the low cost of...10g :)

I won't pay a montly fee for a game. However, if there was a small hourly fee or a by the day fee, I'd consider it. It's just that in one month I could have 20 hours free for game playing and 0 hours the next month.

As for SC2 or D3, I'm not holding my breath. Starcraft Ghost still hasn't been finished yet, and it's being released for the previous generation of consoles. After seeing marines and zerg hidden in Warcraft III, I was excited and thought that maybe a SC2 was in the making.

I still admire those folks at Blizzard, but I absolutely have no faith in them anymore. *crosses fingers and hopes they do something to change my mind for the better*

As was already mentioned this is just a rumor but could not be far from the truth due to the wide success of WOW. I doubt they would make a Diablo MMO as it will be to similar to WOW. (Fantasy Setting) If you dont think there not making a Starcraft MMO then I will say I want some of what your smoking. It would make a lot more sense as it will be a SCI-FI setting and although you guys might not think it there is a pretty large contingent of SCI-FI MMO players that will not play WOW due to the setting alone.

As for actual state of the game I would say for someone like my self that has played since release (I actually let my subscription run out this week since I am on vaction in Spain for month) the game is at a stagnant state with no new gameplay inovations since battlegrounds was releasd over a year ago. There is a lot of excitement and anticipation for the next patch (which is currently being tested on a test server) which will have next 40 man raid instance with the new tier 3 equipment. But after I went on the test servers and experienced some of the new content I just kept hearing this voice in my head saying I done this before and not much all is diffrent from what I have been doing the last 2 years playing this game. (dam I wasted so much time on this game)

For people to say outright that the game sucks is a diservice to your fellow gamers that might read your post. The game from lvl 1-60 is a great game that you and small group of friends can enjoy. But alas once your reached 60 your in for a rude awaking when you enter a PVP Battle ground and basically get for lack of a simpler term Headshot by some other player. Then when you find out the only real diffrence between you and said player is that he has been going every night to 40 man raid to fight some dragon to get the latest and greatest hacksaw is when you get suck in the hamster wheel that is WOW endgame. (actually most MMO are the same)

If you never played people might say your missing out on probably the biggest game that will shape the next couple of years in PC gaming, or you can also count yourself lucky not to be sucked in the the hamster wheel?

And to person that said they are willing to pay EA for a working BF2 patch. Let me let you in on a little secret dosn't matter if you paying $15 a month or no money at all I do not think there has been one WOW patch that has not broken something in the game that was working previous to the patch and dont let me get started on the multiple hacks that people use to play the game.

So in summarry if you have tons of free time and a group a friend to play with you will have a lot fun.(lvl1- 60 after that its really up to what you consider fun) But I give this warning to all that this shit is more addicting than purest of the pure of peruvian white.

That would be the team of former-Blizzard members, now created there own company; ArenaNet? Creators of Guild Wars?

Oh I don't hate Blizzard! Just saying the track record for me isn't perfect anymore like it used to be. More power to them for making another successful game.
