Black Friday worth waiting for?

Hello

I'm planning on upgrading an old Core 2 gaming machine, bringing it up to date with an Ivy Bridge Core i5 with a solid compatible motherboard and 8 GB of RAM. A GPU upgrade will be later.

Of course, I'd like to get the best price possible. With Thanksgiving coming up real soon, I'd like to ask you all if, based on past years, waiting for Black Friday deals online is worth it? I haven't done any serious upgrades in the past few years, so I'm not sure of this myself.

Thanks!

Black Friday has not been good for system builders in about 3 - 4 years now. I doubt that changes this Black Friday.

Cyber Monday's aren't really what they used to be either.

Black Friday has been a joke for tech for a few years now as already stated. Online deals especially have been laughable in that time. NewEgg and their "Black November" among the worst and most stupid with "deals" constituting regular price to $5 off.

Alright, I suspected things still wouldn't be so great online. And I don't think B&M stores will do any better. I'll just watch for deals over the next few weeks then.

Thanks for the very quick responses!

Yeah, generally the deals you see for computer hardware are usually for low-end crappy parts or peripherals like mice, keyboards, and monitors.

Similarly "Cyber Monday" is just about as shitty at least for tech.

It was a good run while it lasted. The best deals I find nowadays are by waiting for sales and rebates or finding stuff used in the Marketplace. Good luck!

Personally I'd say BF has been crap for longer than 4y, and I'd say Cyber Monday was literally, never, ever good. Not even once.

IIRC, right around the time NewEgg instituted "Black November" was when Black Friday went to snot for tech. Up until then it had some good deals, IIRC.

LOL...I've found plenty of great tech deals on Black Friday the past couple of years including laptops, etc...I've got a feeling most of you "tech" people want to sit inside and click the "buy" button instead of getting of your ass and into a store where most of the deals are.

Eh, not worth it most of the time. And usually "getting a deal" at a B&M store means camping out in front of BestBuy and the like 12+ hours in advance of BF opening. Sorry, but no "deal" ever seen on Black Friday is worth camping out in front of a store.

I've never camped out for a Black Friday deal...ever. Sure I waited in line a couple hours and lost a little sleep but got some great deals. Just because its not for you doesn't mean its not worth it to others.

this is interesting to know. I was actually planning on delaying my build till bf/cm but if the experts here are saying it's pointless (although I do want a mechanical keyboard and a 1440p monitor) then I'll just do the build now.

We're talking about good quality desktop deals, not laptop deals.

True~~

I won't lie, this is somewhat devastating news. I held off on purchasing a 7950 at 170$ in hopes of getting something better this black friday. I am quickly realizing that this was a colossal mistake, and that I'll have to wait months to get that performance at that price point again.

May not even happen at all.

lol dude, of course it's going to reach that price point again with time. You think in 2014 they'll still sell for that or more? From here til Christmas I'm sure you'll see it again for 170 or lower.

I got my reference 670 a little over a year ago for like $280 after rebate w/ Borderlands 2 and that was a smoking deal, now that's the common price.

I remember 2010 (could be earlier but the BF following the Sandybridge launch) MC had a killer deal for CPUs. like the 2500 was $149 i think, and literally I was in front of guys elbowing each other for that deal lol. But as of the past two years MC has not been really handing out any deals that make it worth while on BF. Especially since almost every year the lines at MC start at like 3AM....
