Update on [H] pool:

The server is up and running bitcoind (official server software), BUT I have yet to find a working open-source web frontend. All of the ones out there are either poorly secured or just don't work. Since I don't have the PHP knowledge to write a secure pool frontend, we have two options:

1. Someone contributes their skills or we hire a programmer to make us a custom frontend.

2. We give up the idea of an [H] pool and maybe make a specific pool the official [H] pool.

The decision is yours!

I just thought of a fucking brilliant idea...not sure if it's going to work though and I won't be able to test it until Dwolla verifies my bank account. It's going to take 2-3 days...FML. There's quite the loophole I just discovered in trading bitcoins.....in fact, I'm sure other people are abusing it. The loophole will go away though pretty soon - as soon as we get a REAL exchange.

what loophole?

option 2. sounds best right now if 1. isn't an option, I suggest it not be Deepbit, as their hashing power is already more than any one pool should have...

Can someone give me a link to a different real-time price watch since Mt Gox is down?

I believe we have some smart peeps here. Option 1 is fine if someone can stepup and do it for free. If they have skillz obviously.

Yeah, for those who are not aware; When any group achieves 51% of the hashing power of the network they can start overwriting transactions because they are generating blocks faster than anyone else combined, so their block chain is always the longest and by design the network favors only the longest chain of blocks. What happens when you can overwrite transactions? It lets you double spend bitcoins and allowing that would destroy the integrity of the entire system.

Thanks.

EDIT: Lorien, thanks for explaining that in a way I can understand. Im glad I switched to btcguild.

So I'm trying to set up a solo namecoin miner in guiminer. Do I need to get the current blocks or anything like that first?

In the lower left it says "Difficulty 1 hashes: 32", does that sound right? I expected difficulty to be higher, but perhaps 1 is correct for guiminer?

ok does 3.4Mhas with an i7 920 at stock seem fine? the guide lists ~20

So can someone explain to me like I'm retarded (because I am) why on btcguild it says "blocks found - 0" and if I DO find a block will my rewards go way up? I thought EVERYONE chipped in to find the blocks, isnt that how it works?

If i understand correctly every time a block is discovered everyone gets a cut based on your contribution.

But I thought nobody actually discovered a block, that we ALL sort of did, and that's the point of pool mining?

No, single individuals can discover blocks or did you forget about solo mining? I explained this many posts ago.

Guys stop thinking that you can get more with one pool than with other. In the long term if you spend a year of 24/7 solo mining you will receive the same amount of coins as if you were mining in a pool (assuming the pool charges you 0 in fees). Why is this true? Because your share of coins is determined by your own hashing power, the more power you have the larger your share (there is also the hidden benefit of getting more shares in when blocks are found quickly).

The only difference between these 2 approaches is the frequency of payouts. Pool mining gets you a very small steady trickle of coin fractions, whereas solo mining gives you chunks of 50 (once we hit the 210000 block it will be cut in half to 25) but as difficulty increases it will become increasingly harder to find a block on your own so pool mining is a good way to see a return from your work right away.

Haha, seeing specs like that would be total blasphemy for the typical gaming hardware geek.

Well, I guess it is working, as it now reads:
Blocks: 1, Difficulty 1 hashes: 525

Any idea how long it takes a namecoin block to mature?

Thanks for posting back, i just ordered 4. Stock hasnt changed though so i hope they keep it updated.

my buddy ordered two somewhere and they went OOS, they told him they would be getting some in this week and asked him if he wanted to cancel, he said no, they said since he isn't canceling he can even add more cards to his order at the same price ($120)...

lucky dog, I'd ask him to order one for me but I just don't have the $ for it right now...shit

I debated ordering 2, but I need to send my x58 board out for rma this week, and I'm having trouble figuring out where I'm gonna run the one I ordered until my board gets back as it is.

How's the hacking of Bitcoin been going? Anyone ever find any possibility for an exploit? Ignoring the "own 51% of hash generation" attack.

The whole thing is open source. Go through the source code and report to us what you find :)

Hey, I'm just having fun mining and makin money off of it, I could give a rats ass about the rest right now.

From what I understand you don't need 51% and you would only have one shot... not much of an attack.
I mean you only need the world's largest SHA-256 hashing farm making you thousands of bitcoins... then you can double-spend them once, shit-can your own currency value and face any possible legal and activist repercussions... sounds like a waste of money to me.
It's the equivalent of spending the necessary millions to get into yacht racing because you can invoke some sort of condition that will destroy all of the yachts, including your own. Wait, how the hell would that help you? It wouldn't.

Hey, who let you read my journal? That yacht-racing scheme was my idea! It's my goal to destroy all yachts at the same time.

love that last line, new sig most likely

Sweet, they're finally cracking down on noobs and trolls in the official forums.

You guys think a corsair cx600 could handle 2x5870 cards at full blast?

According to my Kill-a-watt, my stock HD5870 pulls about 120W from the wall while running GUIMiner. While mining on both the HD5870 and my 9800GT (pulls 40W), the whole system (see sig) pulls about 425W from the wall.

That Nvidia card is useless and will only eat away at your profits by increasing your energy bill.
