CL is a crap shoot...

all I have to say is that before I would buy a $150-$180 5830 on the FS forum I would snatch up one of the $190 5850s there, I don't have the funds for either so that's a moot point right now, but still, everybody seems to have forgotten about the 5850s since they've been OOS at reasonable prices for so long, but those are actually the golden cards for mining, at least 60MH/s more than a 5830 and uses less powah...

I wanted one anyway before the whole bitcoin crazr took off, wanted to CF with my existing card. So I'm double disappointed.

the calculations are the same for either. the difference is that pooled mining will charge a fee. Solo mining will probably be frustrating, as on average you will be accomplishing nothing for more than two months.

Well the reason I asked is because when estimating value of bitcoins earned over their default 3 months it's like $1000.

that's pretty impressive. Crank up the volts and get some more hash!

lol, I'd actually be in a tie for the #2 spot for 5850s in MH/s if I entered mine in the mining hardware comparison IIRC (365MH/s), that's good enough for me, especially considering that the guy at the #1 spot is running 995, there is no way my card will get that high...lol, plus, it's my main miner, if it goes down and I have to RMA I'm screwed out of more than 1/2 my bitcoin production for about a week or two, and we're at the point that any lost time will be a killer...

IIRC there have been Second Life and/or EVE online heists just as big. Translating those thefts into dollars would have taken more steps than with bitcoins though.
It is still a massive letdown for that guy. I wonder how long until we see exploits or viruses that corrupt bitcoin wallets.

Newegg got some 5850 in stock. 235!!! + shipping. All I can say is wow. That's some premium considering the 5870 was cheaper a few days ago. [newegg link]

WTF IS THIS SHIT?
Because of the anonymity inherent in BitCoin trading, BitCoins are used to fund drug trafficking, amongst other things, and recently attracted the attention of two US Senators, who want to shutdown the network.

how many fucking drug busts have there been where police are strutting about with huge saran wrapped blocks of 100 dollars bills....

His own fault for not protecting himself. Exploits have been around for a while. There were a lot of early fake miners, around the time GPU mining took off, that claimed 30-40% increase in MH/s but were in fact trojans which uploaded your wallet.dat file to a server. Predictably many fell for it because of their own greed.

Okay, I am not understanding something.....

Do I need to setup bitcoin on each computer or just the computer with the wallet?

On the second non-primary wallet computer, I can just install GUIminer and use the BTC guild miner worker I created and not worry about the wallet right?

So if I understand this right, the bitcoin program is for keeping track of your wallet, and the BTC guild is going to send the total bitcoin earned to the wallet as long as the miner worker is on your same account....

Lastly, how are you all "Guarding" your wallet? Isn't the wallet stored on your PC away from others unless they hack into your computer?

You only need 1 installation of the bitcoin app, nothing more.

Right

Not just that, when you first ran the bitcoin app you saw it downloading "blocks", those blocks were downloaded from other people running the app. Think of it as a torrent where you leaving the bitcoin app running is akin to seeding a torrent you have completed (that's the "# connections on the bottom status bar of the app). That is called a node, and it helps the integrity of the network because in essence you are re-distributing the verified collection of transactions that have ocurred in the network.
and the BTC guild is going to send the total bitcoin earned to the wallet as long as the miner worker is on your same account....
Yup. Technically it send the bitcoins to the alphanumeric address on your bitcoin app which is what you enter in the "wallet" field on the BTC Guild website.
Lastly, how are you all "Guarding" your wallet? Isn't the wallet stored on your PC away from others unless they hack into your computer?
Yeah, the only way someone can take your wallet.dat is if they either have physical access to it, or through a trojan.

Can anyone help me to get solo namecoin mining to work in windows? I have server=1 in bitcoin.conf. My miner is using the user/pass in bitcoin.conf, localhost/8336. My router has 8336 forwarded. I can connect with phoenix and get a mhash rate, but it always says 0 accepted and 0 rejected.

The hashespersec in getinfo is 0 too :/

Suggestions?

@wol-va-rine Are you running Windows 7 32bit or 64bit. SDK 2.1 is still a no go for me.

What kind of setups are you guys using for cooling your GPU's? I'm thinking about purchasing some desk fans to use but not sure how well they work compared to just rigging up a couple 120mm case fans over the cards.

desk fans will push way more air. one should be plenty. it will be way louder than your average case fans though. my rig was very hot (homemade itx case with bad ventilation) and the actual case was hot to the touch. took off both side panels and pointed our floorstanding fan at it and no problems since. its in the living room far from any bedrooms, so no problem with noise.

I have 2 6950s in a Fractal Design XL case. One intake 120mm, one exhaust 120mm, one 140mm pointing at the cards, and one exhaust 120mm on the side panel, bottom card gets to 71C, top 67C at ~60% fan. Core 880MHz, Mem 500MHz.

My other PC is just sitting on a motherboard box on my desk with one 6870 and it gets to 71C at 65% fan, Core 1000MHz, Mem 344MHz.

window 7 64bit...

I uninstalled v2.4 on both computers and just ran the v2.1 install and they're both running it now, I wouldn't really sweat it though, it's only like 10MH/s for each GPU...

Weird. Oh well. Not enough time to troubleshoot them. I reinstalled SDK 2.2 and overclocked my 5850 to 900mhz at 1.125v

New GuiMiner adds cpu affinity to the gui.

Heh, for $241 shipped...I Got my 6950 2gb for $221 shipped. Newegg: Gouge On!

that card has been on Newegg for at least two or three weeks at that price, it was OOS but is now back in stock, I remember because I was looking for another 5850 then, they also has an ASUS one in the open box section for a while, but that one sold out as well (at $190...ouch), as did the other ASUS one at $160...

the best bet to get a cheap 5850 or 5830 is CL from someone that knows nothing about bitcoins...lol, I had one dude lined up for two Sapphire 5850s for $220 total (that deal would've beat the 5830 for $ per MH/s), but I didn't get the money fast enough...FML...

east is working fine for me

it worked fine for me too, it's overloaded though, and as far as I know there's no difference which one you connect to, but uswest needs some love too, and I'm not gonna leave my miners on an overloaded server when I go to sleep because I'd hate to wake up to some idle miners...lol

overload-1.jpg

I just checked again and EUnl is overloaded now too...lol

Yeah, the only way someone can take your wallet.dat is if they either have physical access to it, or through a trojan.
Or through a weak password, or through a security hole in some bit of software you use or many other ways.

If you have a lot of bitcoins it would probablly be advisable to have multiple "wallets" and keep most of them in an encrypted form with the decryption keys printed out and locked in a safe rather than stored on your computer.

Not gettin an answer in Genmay, so I bring my question here..

Now on to more serious discussion.. What the the effect of having tri/quad xfire using x8 and x4 PCIE slots for the latter cards..

Say I have this:
(x16) 6950 (350mhs)
(x16) 6950 (350mhs)
Xfired = ~700MH/s

If I did a Tri-Xfire, where the 3rd card is in an x8 slot which would be the result

Scenario 1) 350+350+350 (all continue to run the same)
Scenario 2) 350+350+200 (The card in the x8 slot runs at a reduced rate
Scenario 3) 200+200+200 (All cards run at a reduced rate since one is in x8)

Ive never done Xfire so im not quite sure how it works..
If running 4x 6950's in Xfire (If thats even possible (Yes/No?)), what would the results be. If my 4 slots are x16 + x16 + x8 + x4

Scenario 1) 350+350+350+350
Scenario 2) 350+350+200+100
Scenario 3) 200+200+200+200

PCI-e speed has nothing to do with hash rate. The memory bandwidth requirement for bitcoin mining is very minimal, which is why you see people recommending to downclock your video card's memory to decrease heat and electricity costs. It matters in graphics because then you are making full use of the bandwidth to move texture and geometry of those games. In the case of bitcoin you do none of that.
If I remember correcly Afterburner lets you monitor memory usage but doesn't work on AMD cards. Someone with an Nvidia card can verify this though since it does work on those cards.

So you'll be getting the full speed each card is capable of, provided your miner settings are tweaked properly for each GPU. You also don't need to physically crossfire the cards, just having them powered up on the same system is enough. What you will need are dummy plugs though, or connect each card to a monitor. Here's an easy to follow guide for making your own dummy plugs, no sense in spending unnecessary cash on them: http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/384733-30-second-dummy-plug.html

Lorien has all the answers, dude is definitely on point...
I appreciate the vote of confidence but don't go around preaching my word as gospel lol. I have and can be wrong about the things I say. Just read as much as you can, the info is out there.

do you know how i would change that option in GUIMiner?

In server list. select "other" instead of "btcguild". change the host to either useast.btcguild.com or uswest.btcguild.com. default port should be 8332. no need to edit bat files.
