Bitcoin Discussion Thread Part 2

Really wish I wouldn't have sold my 10 coins when it hit $4.80. I have been going strong with my 2 cards since I first got in, in June. I've been tending to sell 10 at a time at whatever the market is since it crashed.

Guess I shouldn't complain since it's free money earned off something I already owned. Plus I game at night so I get the best of both worlds.

Naw, as I said in my next paragraph it's all free money anyways so not beating myself about it. I'm happy where I'm at in this. Although I have an itch to build a dedicated rig. Seems still kinda expensive. Would be in around $600.

On a little bit of OT note. Does anyone here know of a place that shows a DIY 80/20 open air rack. Specifically I'm looking for a parts and tools needed list.

If only I had free electricity, I would start mining again.
 
Us miners are the chumps. The people who make the real money are the exchange owners or smart speculators making day trades on the value of BTC. It's ridiculously predictable how the price changes (even if only a few cents) over the course of 24 hour or weekly cycles. I just don't have the guts or resources to play.
 
call me a chump if you want, but I've still made over a grand on just mining and selling.

Not much has changed from a hardware perspective in the past 6 months. ATi cards are the way to go, 58xx and 68xx/69xx cards specifically. The 7970 doesn't appear to provide good hash rate for the dollar. Load up the card(s) and start mining.... though, even at the higher current price level, you'll have a tough time getting a return on and of investment....
 
I think 5870's are the best value. You can generally find them around $160 and overclocked with the right drivers and flags you should get 420-450m/hash a second. If your low on pci-e slots a 5970 for $350 might be the way to go, but they dont clock as high. Im currently using 5830's i got for $95 each they get 290m/hash a sec for me each, but draw almost as many watts as a 5870...

nah, I did fire my 2 69x0s back up last week though, little loud but the heat is most welcome, rather wishing I had mined through the dip now.
 
I picked up 4 6950's (all of which are still mining) and can still sell them for the same I bought them.

It went well for me. I bought the cards before they were in high demand and I sold them right when bitcoins value dropped, for higher than purchase price.

Its all about timing.

Its true though, mining is chump change compared to massive quantities of buy/sell or exchange ownership.
 
6950s can cost $200 used and don't even compare to 5870s (were $150 awhile ago).

My 6950s on best overclock pull about 350 MH/s. My overclocked 5870s can do 450 MH/s
 
Well, got my new 7970 up and running. How better to break it in than a little Bitcoin mining!

Using the latest DiabloMiner...
core/mem
925/800 - 547 MH/s
1000/850 - 593 MH/s
1125/975 - 665 MH/s

Not too shabby!

Gotta get Trixx installed now so I can underclock the memory further. Hmm, so seems it just won't let the memory speed go lower than 150 MHz under the core speed. Tried Trixx and Afterburner so far and the close and restart trick that worked to underclock the 69XX memory isn't working.

How is the power consumption on the 7970?

If Parja can get up to 665MH/s on one overclocked 7970, that is almost on par with 1.5 overclocked 5870s which draws around 375W at the wall. Parja, is your power draw about the same for one card or less?

I'm thinking about cashing in about $500 in BTC if I sell @ $7. I think the rise is stalling and we won't be seeing $10 anytime soon. Could get myself a 7970 :)

Diablominer is the way to go with the 7970 right now. It seems to be the only one that really supports GCN at this point.

System in sig with everything but the GPU basically idle.

7970 at 1112mV core voltage, 1125MHz core, 980MHz memory, fan at 44%.

According to my UPS, the system is currently pulling 253W.

...I'm making a net profit of ~$83 a month. I mine primarily on Eligius, so there's no fees and there's merged Namecoin mining as well, so I figure that about balances out any rejected shares. Considering I live in Wisconsin, so the heat generated will offset heating costs a bit, true profit should be a bit higher.

edit: Shit, after running through that exercise, it's making me want to buy a second 7970 now. A little over 6 months to pay off the card...not too bad.
 
Soooo how's everyone doing? I stopped mining back in September but kept churning the 20 or so coins I had left and then I sold all of them once they hit $7 a few weeks ago, making ~$800. With that cash + a gift card and ~$200 out of pocket I bought me a pair of 7970s. They'll be arriving tomorrow.

I checked prices today they just broke the $7 barrier once again. I have a pair of 6970s and an unlocked 6950 that I'm trying to sell but I could put them to mine again instead. I'm very much aware that the 69xx cards are not the most efficient miners power consumption wise so Mhash/watt/hour would be kinda crappy. What would you guys do?

If electricity is cheap, then make some money while the price is still 7 bucks. I sold my stash, now I gotta figure out how to transfer to money to myself from mtgox with minimal fees.
 
I've used Dwolla for about 6months now with no issues, but it does take a few days.

MTGOX > Dwolla > MyBank

How does selling 20 coins make $800?

I am sitting on 45 coins and that would only make $315 @ $7
 
I assumed he took the 20 coins and flipped them when the prices were low.
 
For people with more then 2 or 3 rigs, what are you doing for power? I don't have a good place to put my rigs. My basement where the breaker box is, is always damp/wet. My garage has a tiny two-breaker box. I could bring my rigs to work, but probably would be frowned at.

I have two rigs in the basement, one in the garage, two in the main living area to warm the place.

My breakers can handle about six 5870s per breaker only so I had to split them up.

Huh, so you managed to get the memory clocks low. I wasn't having any success at all with that. I'll have to make sure my Afterburner is set with overclocking mode 2. Sounds like that might be the trick.

I assume you're using DiabloMiner? Are you running with any flags on the client? I haven't heard of any that boost performance at all yet on GCN.
