Biostar adds Windows 7 support for a number of their MBs

Biostar is going against the flow, by adding Windows 7 driver support for a large number of their AMD based offerings, and some Intel Motherboards as well.

Most manufacturers only support Windows 10 on their more modern boards, so this move is certainly unusual.

It seems unclear what prompted Biostar to extend Windows 7 support to this many products. But it shows that Windows 7 is not dead yet. After World of Warcraft added DX12 renderer support to W7, now this happens.

This is good to see.

Microsoft needs to just give up on 10 and re-release 7 as a subscription product or something. It's not like you'd lose anything now that DX12 has been officially ported to 7.

I've had some pretty bad experiences with biostar motherboards though, including the H81MHV3, a socket 1150 MicroATX motherboard that lacked availability of S3 sleep states!

I thought it was a mistake at first. How can a modern motherboard lack sleep states? But no. They actually did not include them in the BIOS of this motherboard. Wound up returning it.

I'd probably never buy their stuff again.

If you absolutely need something dirt cheap, I guess they can meet that need, but I'd rather spend $10 more and get a better brand.

At work we have win 10 too and the computer lags so hard it's killing me internally, but that is all the bloatware and spy-gear they installed this year. Just makes me hate win 10 even more.

In my experience Win 10 tends to be lighter weight and run faster on limited hardware than 7 or 8 does. I disagree with lots of Microsoft's design decisions in Windows 10, but I do think they did a fantastic job of kernel, memory and storage footprint optimization.

Smart move. Until MS builds a proper successor to 7 that respects it's users, provides a telemetry off switch, control over updates and the ability to opt out of auto-installs of all the app crapware, and delete all traces of ugly metro tiles, people will continue to appreciate 7's value.

What use is sleep mode for a cryptominer?

After digging around a bit, I think crypto is their primary market. They advertise it on their website, and after searching around for prices for the cheaper boards, its almost like they are non-existent.

Win 7 keys are cheap, and can be upgraded to Win 10 for free still with a little work.

I'm concerned we are going to see another explosion in botnets and exploits after all the stubborn people holding on to Windows 7 continue to do so after it goes EOL and no longer gets security patches next April.

Yeah, I'm using Linux as well as my primary OS. I did the "free upgrade" to windows 10 a few months after it launched. I don't like it much, but I have everything disabled as much as I can. I dual boot to it for the sole purpose of games. I never even open a browser window in it.

I appreciate companies that support as many OSes as possible. That being said, I still won't be purchasing any Biostar products anytime soon. Now if they decided to take up the Windows XP banner, that might be a game changer.

Win 7 over 10 at least has some logic to it as the OS is still incredibly quick and isn't plagued with terrible UI choices, removed features and other irritating crap. If you aren't a business with customized software, there is literally zero reason to ever use XP.

If you think Windows 7 is incredibly quick try XP on a modern platform. That being said, I would never recommend anyone use XP on a machine that is used on the internet in anyway. The usage scenarios I have in mind for XP are industrial in nature and involve primarily legacy applications that would cost thousands to replace. Part of my last job was to deal with this legacy software and the legacy hardware that runs it. It was supposed to involve replacing at least the legacy hardware but there was never enough time or money to complete that.

I have a x370gtn and it was always running Windows 7 i wonder what they changed?
