BioShock Infinite

agreed...the game is good enough to stand on its own so why not show that off?...lots of epic parts in Infinite to put in a nice commercial...that's like a movie trailer showing scenes that aren't in the movie

EDIT: there are actually a lot of movie trailers that show footage that is not in the movie but that's mostly because the footage was edited out later on...with game trailers that is not the case as the trailer for Infinite I saw was airing a few days before the game's release date

thats just intelligent marketing. at hard we are like how come were not doing the things they did in the commercial

but most people probably dont even realize it. they see the commercial, buy the game and dont even notice that they cant do what is displayed.

How? I'd say CGI trailers are closer to false advertising than any other sort.

It's not really false advertising.

Think of it like this, remember final fantasy 7-8? Remember how the CGI always looked better, and the characters were flying all over beating the shit out of each other, yet in the game you just stood there and selected abilities? It's like that, but yet no one minded that...

A CGI is just meant to show the world as fully alive, and something that gameplay can't quite hit yet...could they have done pieces of gameplay with great set pieces as a commercial? Sure. But this is still nice.

They always are.

Correct. Gamers usually care about gameplay and thus typically want gameplay as the reason for buying a game, no?

There's plenty of other ways a gamer can get information about a game besides TV commercials. Numerous websites have gameplay videos and other trailers that include gameplay and actual graphics months before, and long after a game is released.

A simple "Bioshock gameplay video" Google search would do the job.

Just like the cover-art, the TV commercials are there to reach a more broad audience.

Thank you, captain obvious.

but a game is not the same as a movie...I'm not sure if the general public will watch a TV commercial for a game and be impressed enough to buy it...gamers (even casual ones) have an idea of what games they plan on buying and commercials won't generally sway them into buying something they didn't already know about or are familiar with...so in the end I'm not sure who exactly the commerical is targeting

Why are we arguing about commercials? It's not that big of a deal.

I mean, essentially other than the "Elizabeth in a noose" thing, everything else can happen in the game that you see in the trailer. Maybe not in that exact way but it's a far stretch from "false advertising".

Friends & family of gamers who don't (usually) have a clue.

I only piped up because it has always bothered me how a couple of my friends get excited over the next CoD based on the CGI trailer ><

Yeah, on future playthroughs I will probably try using some of the other ones more. The real issue is that you get the last three or so more than halfway through the game.

I did start using the Untertow one more near the end...pushing the heavy guys over the edge and not having to fight them is pretty nice.

Whoa ... nice use of Undertow ... going to reload the end fight and try that one!

So back on gameplay discussion...what did you guys use Charge for? I used it a couple times when I first got it and was like "Whoa, cool"...and then never really used it again. Seemed underpowered.

its only good if you upgrade it to be invulnerable while charging it up or whatevs; i agree i think its definitely on the weaker side though

future DLC ideas...

I'm hoping the DLC addresses the gap from when Dewitt is reborn as Comstock at the baptism and the intervening years as he meets Rosalind Lutece, experiments with tears and ultimately builds Columbia

what other game in recent memory has given way to so much speculation and discussion?...just goes to prove why this game deserves a 9/10 at a minimum

That's a good idea, because that leap is mostly unexplained. Ultimately I'd just like to see more epic skyline battles with the handyman and maybe the enemies making more use of the skylines as well. Not sure where it would fit into the story but that's what I want personally. :D

I played on Hard and used charge for most of the game after I got it. The upgrade not only makes you invulnerable for a few seconds but also recharges your shields. Plus there is another upgrade that gives it an aoe explosion effect.

I used shotgun/charge/ and a piece of clothing (don't remember which one) that makes an aoe shock effect if you overkill someone, freezing everyone in place like shock jockey.

Worked really well.

I think any DLC for this would probably ruin the emotional tone.
Anyone else feel like making teh Vox populi evil and stupid was kind of a cop out specifically to not take a political side with how relevant this game is. This makes me think they pussied out a little on some things.

PC Gamer explains the ending SPOILERS PLEASE BE WARNED

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/04/04/bioshock-infinite-ending-explained/
There's one important thing here that's not discussed. In fact I think it's the reason it's called "Infinite." Elizabeth kills you and which prevents you from becoming Comstock. If Comstock never existed then Comstock never took Anna. If Comstock never took Anna, Anna never became Elizabeth. If Elizabeth never existed, then Elizabeth could not have prevented Comstock from being created. Thus the whole cycle repeats... infinitely.
As much as I am tempted to replay from the point at which I can redeem my Season Pass rewards, I'm wondering ... is there a point to doing another playthrough?

well infinite is probably referring to the infinite loop booker has been doomed to repeat which is attempting to save elizabeth (hes always stopped by the songbird) remember when you flip the coin with the lutices or whatever their name is? and theres a bunch of lines under heads etc. so theyre actually breaking the loop when they drown booker

Sorry maybe I misunderstood. Just seemed like you were having trouble grasping the concept.

LOL thats what I was thinking. (lurked) Besides, commercials are made to sell the games. I watched the commercials you guys seem to be discussing on YouTube. Don't see what the big deal is. If anything the game surpassed what I would take from just the commercials alone.

How do you prevent something from happening when it's already happened in an unlimited number of ways?

Leave an upper tanker with a note tied to it telling your alternate self to impregnate Elizabeth before it's too late.

That's just plain wrong... Elizabeth/Anna is Booker's daughter.

With the right gear, I'm a flying terror. Although the game trailer uses non-game footage, the spirit is essentially captured. Playing the game like the game trailer is fun.

even though I didn't use it all that much Charge seemed pretty cool...especially the 'trap' version where you hold it down and create a shield against bullets and when you release it all the bullets you 'caught' get flung back at the enemy

the 'Gear' you find in the game also seemed pretty powerful

I noticed this a lot as well. I'd look around, nothing going on, and see Liz cowering next to a box or something...oh I guess I am about to fight again, huh?

I guess many would say that since she could see into other worlds that, I guess, her advance A.I. would see into the near future and know I was about get attacked...or something like that...

Sorry, I'll quit trolling...

yea I think this is actually more a result of their own misplaced ambitions than anything, which is not necessarily a bad thing in itself. someone at some point just decided, that it would be way more impressive for liz to be running ahead of you instead of following behind, thus causing all sorts of problems like this. same like how they place her in the line of fire just to keep her in your sight, seems "smart" but ends up breaking immersion.

You're obviously right and I'm wrong. Which is why so many games with convincing AI partners/companions exist... that react realistically to objects and situations and go through realistic moods and have a sense of feeling.

You must be such a great resource to the game development team you work on.

No that's just where they got it wrong. I'm actually watching a video now of Ken at BAFTA where he says something to that effect when they're talking about her moods. They won't be able to get it right 100% of the time, but they've obviously done their best.

well tyvm I am a great resource, but lack of comprehension does not make it bs. her "moods" would be the worst example you could pick, since they're just hardcoded animations queued by a certain point of progress in the game. nothing to do with ai at all, since they're not affected by anything going on in her environment. there are no dependent algorithms involved with this feature whatsoever, but it seems dynamic to you as a player, see what I mean? it's an illusion. well done nonetheless, but very misleading when you're trying to discuss what you don't understand.

that's the difference between you and me, or anyone else who could know what goes into making any of this possible. you see an actual person by your side, that enriches your experience with helpful and thought provoking actions. I see a collection of triggers and responses, just the same as any other npc in the game. the fact that she happens to know a little bit more about what is going on around her is completely irrelevant to me, when her responses are on the exact same level of complexity as that other guy trying to kill me. the way you should measure this is how much information goes into triggering this action, not how emotional they are. that's the job of graphics and visual artists, not programming or scripting devs.

I think you're thinking of Return to Sender. Charge was the one where you rush forward really fast and melee enemies.

The "gear" can indeed be powerful but since it's randomized there are some times when you don't really find anything useful at all. IMO it should be semi-randomized with some powerful stuff that you can find any time.

I seem to have forgotten. What games have you worked on again? I need a reminder.

the reason I didn't like using 'Charge' much was because it wasn't usueful against large groups of enemies...once you use it you could possibly be stuck in area where there are guys surrounding you...it's good against solo enemies but I preferred vigors like Shock Jockey and Devil's Kiss which could be lobbed at groups of enemies from a small distance

I never really found anything better than the 70% chance of melee burning and 100% chance of a ring of fire when exiting the rails.

I'd love to do another playthrough and find something better...especially the invulnerability ones.

That said...I'm definitely looking forward to my next playthrough, just because I didn't really embrace the vigors + shooting...I was always trying to conserve one or the other when I didn't need to.

The fight after the songbird elevator, outside the bank, went from being a level I fought for 30 minutes using all the ammo I could find to survive to one I blew through on the first try after chaining the Murder of Crows on everyone, especially the handyman, while actually shooting in vital spots. I went from using every salt and health to just using 2 health kits due to getting stuck on the rail and a few salts thanks to getting replenished with those by Liz

I'm going to wait until the first patch is released before replaying Infinite...I didn't have any crashes or bugs but I still want to wait for it...I hear they plan on fixing the FOV slider with the new patch
