BioShock Infinite

Alyx does not even come close to the character Elizabeth. It's not even close. Dat nostalgia is a powerful drug.

I see Elizabeth as filling in for the fact that you don't carry around health/salt packs that you can use when you want. That is her role in combat. They took away the 6 health packs you can store and use whenever you want (which would make the game to easy) and changed it to a timer based system where she throws you what you need.

On Hard there were a few times she saved my ass.

For anyone who has just gotten to...

That part where in your head you're like "uum ok but how will they
carry that stuff?"

and then you get to it and booker is like "Aww we can't carry all this shit I guess I didn't think this through.."

and now you're all "NO BOOKER WE DID THINK IT THROUGH YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT."

That urge to reach through the screen and throttle booker, I feel you.

So anyway I guess I'm at the end now. Right after hospital don't spoil it for me. Had to quit last night cause apparently I stayed up til 1am playing :(. Great game over all. Still an 8/10. One note to future developers - Don't throw in the ridiculous back tracking nonsense at the end of the game when people really want to just get to finale. It really hurts the lasting impression.

I suppose it's on a timer. There have been more than a few times where I needed stuff and she couldn't "find" anything.

I can remember a few times where I said "holy shit" out loud, then 3 seconds later Booker says "shit...". They did a good job with the voice acting and Booker experiencing everything with you.

Ha. I liked when they were talking about how the city floats and Booker was like "Soo...not balloons?"

Shit on hard she saves my ass constantly, but instead of finding the cheat ways out of firefights I just run around like a maniac. I can't imagine what that looks like on screen and then when the smoke clears I walk by all the stuff I could have used I'm like MAAAAAN. whatever. I'm curious what the handy man is like on regular/easy. On hard its like in Jurassic park is getting chased by the T-REX he kills me in maybe 2 hits.

I put a few hours into this last night. I searched pretty much everything and am just to the part where you take Liz to the zep to Paris so I'm not that far in.

-The environment is awesome but not very immersive IMO. It gets less amazing the longer I play; There is zero interactivity and I can't believe that a city in the sky can feel so linear. I'd see a nearby building and think I could jump to it only to be reset back to the intended path.
-None of the characters are anywhere near as interesting to me as the characters in the original.
-There are people everywhere but there are only 2 or 3 different faces. Much like the original but it's light everywhere so it's even more obvious.
-The weapons are boring, the vigors are boring, the combat is boring (I started on medium difficulty and it's so easy that it's pathetic; is it possible to change the difficulty without restarting?). AI is the standard: enemies standing in the open, hiding in cover and moving to the open, and running straight at you.
-The game is very pretty even though the graphics are not amazing technically.
-The story is obviously quite good but I've become less interested in it as I go.

I'd give the original a 9 and Infinity a 7 at this point.

kind of hard to give a score on an incomplete profile in infinite though.. the ending is what makes it good. i think playing through i was thinking this is fun, easily a 7 or 8. then i finished and i was like 9 or 10 for sure.

Bump that difficulty up to hard. You should be able to do it without having to start over. 1999 mode is the only one you cannot change once started.

Yeah it may change. But after a few hours I felt like I was having to force myself to keep playing since the gameplay is pretty boring and the story hasn't really grabbed me whereas the original captivated me from the start.

the story gets more and more intriguing as you go on if you ask me.

hard to beat that bioshock 1 intro though!

In the original Bioshock everything was fucked up and it was worth explorring to find out why the people were the way they were. In this you basically just have a city full of irritating wealthy gentles and ultra poor minorities . Its clear why things are the way they are and why things break down. It's much less opaque and mysterious than the original. However towards the end it gets far more interesting. The game ends up being a more 1 on 1 personal story than this big adventure most of the game makes it out to be.

I agree with you, I'm not that impressed either. I've already mentioned some of the same things you did - but got attacked for even stating them.

At this point I'd give it a 4 or 5 tops. There is nothing original, nothing unique about this game, it feels and looks dated to me. I've started to just play it as a shooter and got a message the other night "Don't forget to use your plasmids". Plasmids? I thought they were vigors now...

hah to all the people complaining about infinite being dumbed down, you should of made noise when the original bioshock was released as the retarded eccentric tryhard cousin of system shock 2, that was a game. bioshocks are just try hard eccentric wank that blinds you with over the top world and controversial theme's to cover it's horrible gameplay.

Levine you really are a shock artist, a shockingly bad one, sad because you used to be cool man.

All I've seen you bitch about is the low resolution fruit.

I said it before and I guess I'll have to say it again. Levine has talked about in interviews how resource intensive Elizabeth is. Regardless of what engine was used given the multiplatform nature I'm sure stuff was cut and reduced to make sure it ran as smooth as possible for all - pc, 360, ps3.

I don't know anything about game development so I can't say what it would take to add higher-resolution textures/models to the U3 engine just for PC, or if it's even possible.

I for one, can easily look past the little things for the big picture. Sucks for those of you who cannot.

I'm still not that far into it so there's still a chance that it may grab me more than it has.

I think you nailed it here.

Well you're being a bit harsher in your assessment than I was. While I don't really care for it all that much at this point I can see why some would so I tried to avoid being confrontational and stating my opinions as fact.

It's getting harder and harder for me to get into games so I've begun the process of accepting that I may just be slowly falling out of the hobby as I get older.

Hah, has to be.

Calling someone SHOCKINGLY (nice pun nevertheless) bad, is quite a ballsy move. Considering people here all think they're worthy of being a creative director. Please. Back to that shit 9-5 thing you call a job.

It takes QUITE a lot of work, to do anything really. It's not a "let's fix this real quick" type thing. Nothing is quick.

I also agree with your last sentence there. For those that pointed out why they don't like the game. Thanks. Great. To those that enjoy the game and praise it, thanks. BASHING the game left/right though, really? C'mon now. Some of this just has to be downright idiocy.

Really. The trolling and whining is getting past ridiculous.

I don't think this is a spoiler but I'll hide it anyway. I took a little more time on the beach after catching up with Elizabeth than the first playthrough.

I walked over to the guys working with the medicine balls and she tried picking up one up, but couldn't and said something like "don't laugh" to Booker.

Then I accidentally found a basket with what I guess is rocks in it. So Elizabeth walks over to it and goes like "watch this" and starts skipping rocks. Some skipped once, twice, I saw skip like 5 times as well. Booker says "we need to go" and Elizabeth says something like "OK, just one more" and throws one last rock before walking away.

I was really enamored with the skipping rocks scene. She was more real than fake in that moment. It's THAT level that puts this game above the rest.

That kind of stuff just shows that some developers care just that bit more. I've seen this in other games where the little details just always stand out, at least to me (and you I suppose).

That's the kind of attention to detail in this game across the boards that really impresses me.

Thankfully it's fun to play, too. :)

the most interesting things about the games are the locations. Other than that, they are a standard run of the mill linear shooter and anyone who says other wise is just blinded by who knows what.

Fun games, great locations, good stories, and I personally love the audio recordings (thats just the SS love in me) but they aren't nearly as groundbreaking as they are made out to be. Again, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed bioshock 1 (I can't remember bioshock 2 at all) and so far I am enjoying infinite but it is most certainly not the OMG BEST GAME EVERBBQ!!

I don't think it breaks a lot of new ground either nor do I think it's the best game ever but some of the whining and trolling and hate I've seen in this thread (not you) is even more absurd than what you're taking exception to.

I think what this game does it does VERY well and it's certainly something special, all told.

See, I missed that whole thing, and I spent what felt like a lot of time on the beach. I think the game has some good moments but you really have to work to get them, which can be frustrating sometimes. Definitely worth a second play-through, though. I might just go at it on Normal to take it slower and check out more story stuff.

Slightly off-topic but, I wonder what happened to all this stuff?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Y_DSfjAdhlU

Some cool stuff there that apparently never made it in the game.

Maybe shows up in the three forthcoming DLCs?

The graphics, animations and lighting look better in that video than what we have in the retail copy.

Elizabeth summoning a rainstorm and dewitt uses a shockjock to combo. Where was that in this game? Wow, thanks for ruining my day :( Well I guess they replaced her vigor powers with tears as I see none in that video.

I've watched some of the old clips and what I think is that they just changed the overall direction of the game at some point. I remember reading like a tweet or something from Levine that someone posted on Reddit i think where he said originally the game was going to center around two opposing factions and comstock wasnt a major player or even in the game.

A lot changes in a games development, especially when it takes 5 years or so.

The powers Elizabeth has in those videos doesnt make sense in the final game, not to me anyway.

Edit: that clip is from 2010 and heavily scripted.

I heard they weren't happy with a lot of it and stuff was dumped but I'm a little annoyed that particle effects were cut out. Physx could've taken care of a lot of that stuff. Would have helped immensely.

Anyway I finished it. It was good. Not incredible yeah 8/10. I think alternate endings and a little clarification on a few things would have helped.

This is B.S.

Besides the physics with her dress (was actual cloth) I don't see a single damn thing about Elizabeth that is "resource intensive" vs. any other NPC in any other game ever.

Lets see here...

She followed you around...not taxing.
She hid during combat...not taxing.
She threw you supplies when needed...scripted to do so...not taxing.
She would open tears for you...scripted to do so...just her doing an animation...not taxing.
She would talk to you...used 60% of my CPU power

I've seen you use the "they didn't do this or that because ELIZABETH!" quite a number of times yet you nor the developer has explained what EXACTLY SHE DOES THAT'S SO AMAZING AND DIFFICULT!

She easily is no more "advanced" or anything than Alyx was from HL2. Hell, at least Alyx would FIGHT! Everything Elizabeth did was either scripted or simple shit like maybe finding a lockpick or two. That isn't "advanced"...shes simply programmed to go "there is a lock pick in this area, walk over to it and say some scripted line". Woooowwww. No advanced A.I. was needed or anything.

Now I can see how advanced she would have to be if we got an Elizabeth that was shown in the game play trailers released over the past couple years, but we didn't. We got a standard NPC.

Shit getting dumped, stuff getting re-written, that is how good games are made. Or games like Alien: Colonial Marines arrive at retail. The spectrum, it seems, is not biased.

EDIT: Looks like JoeUser is back, I can't wait for more input and knee-jerk reaction from that fine fellow.

Guys, it was not a good game. Just because you enjoyed the story, setting, and game play does not mean it was good. Open your eyes.

So, so wrong. I'll see if I can find the Levine clip when I'm home later. He obviously doesn't go into a lot of technical talk, but her AI has a vast, vast number of different... tasks that she can perform, and it all has to be in direct response of what you, the player does.

Tell me that's easy to program, go on, tell me.

Looks like JoeUser is back, I can't wait for more input and knee-jerk reaction from that fine fellow.

What part exactly of what I just said is knee-jerk? Please explain how I am wrong. If you can't then STFU and quit trying to make it seem like I'm just spouting shit off at the mouth as if I didn't play this mediocre game or something.

Besides the story NOTHING about this game was "revolutionary" or "GOTY" material.

I feel like I'm at a Apple announcement or something with all the blind praise this game is getting through no actual merit.

Bioshock Infinite had barely anything remarkable other than the story. That is it. Everything else was generic and has been done before and BETTER time and time again.
