Why on earth would the president ever need (legitimate) emergency control of the internet?

The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.

reminds me now of Star Wars... lol

I voted for this guy, but some of the shit that's been going on lately has just ticked me off. I hope he enjoys that one term in office if he keeps this up.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.

hello... *taps mic*... is this thing on.

At what point during the last election did people not put DEMOCRAT and SOCIALIST together? Part of me is actually laughing as I watch more and more people realize that voting for Democrats was one of the worst political moves ever made in the history of the US. The other part of me wonders if enough of the people who realize they screwed up... are going to remember that in the upcoming congressional elections, and kick enough of the Democrats out to have a 2/3+ majority to over-ride and repeal the legislation passed by the Democrats.

It began January 20, 2009 my son.

You're off by a few decades...

Same shit different party.

On a related note - any of you guys read "Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow. It's a quick read and freely available in any ebook flavor you want from the author's webpage, here: http://craphound.com/littlebrother/download/

I read it on my cell phone, on a plane. Nothing like reading a book about the government incompetence on a day you deal with the Totally Senseless Administration.

And this is why the EU and China is against the US holding the Keys to the internet.... because of stupid shit bills like this.

Seems like Ted Stevens is at it again..

"In case people start dumping all over our tubes, we need to stop them!!"

I guess its so WE The People Cant have any "Freedom" or Legal Rights By the Laws and Constitution of this Once Great Land that I wouldve died for at One Time :(

all we can hope for at this point is that things can be held back long enough for the next elections. I'm not liking this "change"

What you are all missing is that when the shit hits the fan and nobody was on top of this, the public will cry bloody murder.

Couldn't be more true Saist.

Its laughable that when we (Not necessarily republicans or conservatives but simply intelligent people) brought up his socialist roots during the election we were crazy racists. How much shit is he going to take control of.... banks... auto industry... healthcare.... internet..... before people get the point that the democratic party is no longer the JFK part................

I'm not sure what threat they could hope to combat with this sort of executive power over the internet - or how you would go about creating such a power structure... it's not like the internet is housed in some big building somewhere.

To me, this just sounds dangerously close to state censorship if controlled by the wrong people.

I did enjoy the bit about WoW and porn that someone mentioned.

If only a republican administration has initiated this, then it would have been "patriotic" and anyone apposing it a terrorist.

ouch this isnt what i voted for... and will probably pass quickly as like line 5000 of the healthcare bill lol

where is bruce willis? so now we are giving them a control switch... didnt they watch die hard 4?

bucket: sadly i agree.

I HATE politicians. They want POWER. The people (well, some of us) want less government, and Obama wants the government to be in everything.

And Democrat != Socialist. Rebublican wouldn't be much better....

This bill (among MANY MANY other changes in the past decade or so) has me very worried about the future of this country.

What ever happened to the President supposed to be protecting the Consitution and our rights? Did that just escape the American people?

Yea Democrats are the root of evil! Their so evil they had to have come from a mixed breed of demonic angels and poor helpless woman!

To me, all logic is left at the door when you completely resign yourself to one party vs. another. You forfeit your right to think and you let other people do the thinking for you.

Yes I am a Democrat, but I look at every issue and have sided my opinion towards a Republicans many times in the past. I'm really getting sick of this partisan BS that is going on in this country, it's like a game of HALO where you have everyone and their mom trash talking the other team, because the whole point in the game is for your team to win.

Unfortunately this is real life and its not always about winning, it's about doing whats right for the greater good of the US. I also do not agree with this bill, I can understand the logical and proper reasons behind it's proposal but I think we have greater things to worry about right now. We can't tackle too many things at once, and I think that is Obama's greatest flaw.

It is nice to know that the democrats in power are officially burning the constitution.

....and they call Bush a fascist.

Here's the worrying parts:
"We must protect our critical infrastructure at all costs--from our water to our electricity, to banking, traffic lights and electronic health records," Rockefeller said.

Why are our water, electricity, and traffic lights connected to the public internet in a way that opens them to being completely controlled? Even when I really really try I can only think of seeing one's water consumption, but what possible use would it be for me to have the power to shut down my water over the internet? On the supplier side do we really want unmanned, without any human supervision, remotely controlled over the public internet water treatment plants?

Planes - makes sense. You can't have air travel without planes, but at the same time planes can pose a danger to people not even on them. It makes sense for the government to say it's dangerous for them to take flight for a short period.

The internet however is only as dangerous as WE make it. Water, electricity, traffic lights, etc. all existed BEFORE the internet. They don't require the internet. Any vulnerability to the internet is put there by the government unnecessarily - so why should we trust them to know well enough to protect them?

"If your company is deemed "critical," a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, and when the government would exercise control over your computers or network."

Does that really seem fair to anybody? Particular when the bill doesn't even say what would define you as critical.

I HATE politicians. They want POWER. The people (well, some of us) want less government, and Obama wants the government to be in everything.

Unfortunately for you the ones that want less government are outnumbered by the ones that want more. If that wasn't true you'd have Ron Paul in there right now who ran on a platform of downsizing the government as much as possible. (and in return people called him crazy for wanting to do so)

Patriot Act.. which made half of this stuff even remotely possible. signed by Bush

yeah it seems like it's one of those damn-if-you-do, damn-if-you-don't thing with this legislation.

If a fire sale was to happen for example, and appropriate government agencies weren't prepared for it, the public is going to demand why.

If the government prepares before anything happens, the public is going to demand that the government stop turning this country into a police state.

This very true and since people always want what they feel they deserve, it will always be this way. Since each party stands on the ground that supports the needs of a specific set or class of Americans.

It goes with what I have been feeling all along, the government isn't just corrupt and a failing system, the corruption that causes this goes to the very core of the USA and that is the citizens.

You guys are so missing the point. Why is this measure needed now? Is there a threat that we aren't being told about? Do you think a massive bot attack to cripple the our infrastructure to pre-empt lets say an invasion of Taiwan is highly probable or even imminent?

The President can already exercise emergency powers in times of crisis to do just that. What this bill does or is trying to do is to clarify steps to bring public systems back online after being shut out.

People really need to read the article instead of the headlines and start making assumptions.

OMG! How dare you even assume the democrats aren't evil to the core!
TERRORIST!
