First of all, this is not a flame at all, to any company out there. Its rather me being extremely shocked.

There was a recent review and in it were the specs that BF2 will have.
Q: Can you give us a definitive answer as to what the system requirements are?
A: Minimum System Requirements are 1.7 GHZ CPU, 512mb of RAM, Video card that supports 1.4 shaders. That is Geforce FX and higher, Radeon 8500 and higher. (Geforce 4 Cards will not work).
Recommended System Requirements are 2.0 GHZ to 2.5 GHZ CPU, 1gig of RAM, Video Card that supports 1.4 Shaders.

The first thing that caught my eye right away was the no Geforce 4. I'm really REALLY surprised by this. I would think the dev's would want the widest range of support possible. And the GF4s are still popular cards in the modest rig out there. I know my girlfriend has one and I'm impressed by it every time I go to her house and play HL2/CS:S on it. Its still a good card (She has a Ti4600) in its old age now.

This makes me worry. Looking at BF2 screenshots.. the graphics are not that impressive. So why couldnt they support a still decent graphics card. It wouldnt have been hard at all for them to code a bit for 1.1 shader cards. It'd widen their player base too.

More shock than anything, very bad decision in my eyes.

I still have a voodoo 2 card and I am also shocked it hasn't had any support in recent games (except for doom 3!!)

ummmm it WILL work...let me see.....here's a question....is a radeon 8500 (hahahah) newer than a geforce 4 ti4xxx series? I doubt it....so if a radeon 8500 works, a geforce 4 card will work too....maybe not the mx series that dont support certain shaders..like in splinter cell

Yeah that was kind of weird that a Radeon 8500 which was meant to compete with Geforce 3s works and yet the new product line Geforce 4 Doesn't work. What could be missing from the Geforce 4 that the Radeon 8500 has?

If it doesn't for some reason... it won't be long until it does.

Im sad, first EQ2, now this.

My precious Geforce is being phased out... : *tear*

Time to upgrade :D

Is there any system out there that will handle this game? Doesn't seem like it.

It would probably a disservice to the customer if the did support such an antiquated GPU.

I wouldn't want to play any recent game on anything less than a 9700 Pro.

Not saying the GeForce 4 line is bad (I have a Ti4200), but it is asking a lot to support such a game.

And you say the graphics are not impressive? Man, you're a tough one to please, BF2 is pretty damn good looking.

well according to valves poll on video cards used in steam, the 9800 pro is at the top of the charts.

k.

Yep this is the problem. ATI cards from 8500+ pushed support for PS1.4 which at the time was alienated as not needed. Nvidia in their holy wisdom left it out of the gefore 4 series. You absolutly cannot place blame on anyone since they dropped to the lowest possible shader they could to run a very system demanding game. If you do want to blame someone, blame nvidia. Though that decision was made long ago. Put it this way, you want to play the game on its lowest settings, spend 100 dollars.

First, I honestly doubt the graphics will be as impressive as screenshots show. From my experience they never are, even at max settings.

Second, this is what they said.

Third, be surprised but the 8500 was more future proof than the Geforce 3s and 4s. Both of the GFs were just hacked versions to barly support programable shaders.

Now, I'm just going by what was said. Seeing as how the GF4 doesnt support shader 1.4, the 8500 does. The GF4 were nothing but a souped up GF3.

I agree with what another person said though, if it doesnt at launch I think they will add it in at one point.

also it saddens me that they arent using 2.0 shaders. look at the recommended system requirements. shader model 1.4 grrr.

Probably because a ton of 9800 and 9600 series cards came with a free Half-Life 2 coupon.

This is what I'm saying. Yes, the engine is nice and all. But look at what Source does, look at the Doom engine, look at the Crytek engine, they all look good on a Geforce 4 still. They are all useable on this card. There's no reason to cut this card, its not that old yet.

You make another good point. For an engine that's suppose to push cards, why no 2.0 support. 1.4 all the way. LAZY dev's that's all it is. The consumer out there is now getting hurt very badly. And all of us hardcore people could care less. Soon games on the PC will go away because there's no one willing to buy a new $300 graphics card every two years.

Graphics are as good as the screenshots Skrying, you can check out the movies at gamespot or someplace else. Purpously picked ones that were rewashed, those are in game.

I've seen them all, and no the videos are not nearly the quality as your screenshots. The videos are played without AA, and some of the SSs show this too. The game looks horid without it, but I'm going to go on a ledge and say it'll lag like hell with it.

The leader of my clan is a rabid BF series fan. He shows them all to me all the time.

Dont know what to tell you. The minimum they require is DX8.1, Nvidia simply didnt start to support it until the NV30. Thats what Nvidia did with direct X requirements back then, they never really followed through to the letter, ATI on the other hand has pretty much supported all possible. Obviously now a price will be paid on a very popular multiplayer game. As i said, its a simple 50-100 dollar upgrade, so if it means that much, no reason to complain. Dont forget that alot of people that have these older cards, still have them because there has been no need to upgrade. If they want to play it they have to get with the times a bit.

i darent imagine what this game will run like on the FX series. i expect a million posts about people saying "why wont BF2 run on my ub3r l337 5200 64bit? omfgzorz" :D

I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that ATI 9800 owners were given free HL2 vouchers with their purchase and the ability to beta test CSS :) Bit of a biased poll there heh.

damnit! my 6800 isnt listed, son of a bitch

Yeah, I don't think too many people own our cards. Most either went all out for a GT or Ultra, or waited for a 6600GT or kept their 9800.

Oh well, I don't mind having uncommon parts in my computer

Or maybe since for its time it was the best card?

This is how I feel. I have the money but I cant be buying a new product every cycle. I'll milk a product for what it's worth and once I literally CANNOT use it anymore I upgrade. Personally I feel If I've had a card for 2 years and I need to upgrade I might as well.

Or the fact that the 9800 was the best card for some time. Not all 9800's had the coupon. In fact, more didnt, than did.

wasnt it only 9800 xt's and 9600 xt's?

thats what i thought too. It was most certainly only the 9600XT/MO9600 out of that line.

I dunno. My brother got one with his 9600 Pro AIW. I think it was supposed to be for the XT's only, but some regular 9800 Pros got some too. As best as I can remember, little foggy..

Whatever the case, Im sure empty has another reason to call it a bias "poll". When its not even a poll to begin with.

i think some of the manufacturers started throwing in coupons with their 9800 pro cards to get rid of them.

You've lost your speaking privelages for being an idiot, don't claim it will work when it will not. It does not have the required shader support, hence they will not work in splinter cell pandora tommorow or chaos theory.

Q5: Which products are bundled with the Half-Life® 2 promotional offer?

ATI is offering the Half-Life® 2 promotion with the following products:

Built By ATI qualifying products (available in North American Retail, only)
RADEON® 9800XT
ALL-IN-WONDER® 9600 PRO/XT
Or

Graphics By ATI qualifying products (available worldwide)
RADEON® 9800XT
Alienware's AREA-51M™ Notebooks with ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® 9700 Module

Straight from the ATI/HL2 voucher page. Since i cant seem to find one website or picture of a 9800 Pro retail box with the voucher sticker inside, which are everywhere for the XT versions are specified, i think you can take the reason of the 9800Pro numbers because of voucher, and kill it. It was never bundled with it.

these are the minium requirements... I sure hope they will have support for at least ps 2.0 :(

There was a recommended too. It listed 1.4. For some reason I guess some dont see, 1.4 was not the lowest they could go. It was just laziness from the dev's point. Oh well, dont wonder why when the PC game market just keeps getting smaller. If the BF on consoles is popular dont be surprised if it leaves PC for good.

Yea stupid dev crew, why couldnt they drop in shader code from 4 years ago, im sure its super easy....say...you wanna do it?

Incase anyone didnt notice this game is Nvidia backed.

No they weren't. They were the GF2 with a clock speed bump and nothing more.

The GF2MX was a hacked up GF2 with half the memory bus, half the pipes.
