Beware: Buying While Retarded

I saw a guy stealing a video card from my best buy so I told the guy in that department....then the cops arrested his ass :)

You guys want to see funny stuff... I work in a pharmacy in CA.

We catch people all the time trying to get illegal prescriptions filled. Yes they get taken away by the cops.

One time... some guy came up to the window, drops off a script... its for Vicodin 100 tabs, of course, he's tried to add an extra 0 on the end of it and is trying to get a script for a full 1000 tablets of Vic. The biggest and best kicker of it all **the extra 0 isn't in the same ink color as the original.** The doc used black ink and he added the extra 0 in blue ink.

I used to work for compussr as a bench tech there...i was paid 10 dollars an hour to fix peoples machines.

One day there 2 guys came in complaining that there USB's was not working. Now i don't remember what the model of the machine is since it's been like 8 years. :D But they had installed the card themselves. Well opened the machine and the card was in an ISA slot and it was a PCI card.

I was surpised it did not blow the card up or anything like that. Also i had to explain the differnce between PCI and ISA to them...They never got it. heheh Also they had to pay over 150 dollars to get this fixed...i felt so bad after they got ripped off like that.

I myself am 25 now. I work at a mortgage company that does a little over 4 billion a year. And i am the Network admin there. And it does not change from retail to pro. hehe

SO many stupid questions.

But i somtimes goto bestlie and compussr here and there to give the techs a run for there money. I know what it was like. The techs back when i was there where as stupid as the ones working there today. and they do nothing but rip people off. When i was working there i had the HIGHEST quota for repaired machines. But the lowest income. So they fired me.
I was pisssssed...........but i was happy that peoples machines where fixed and working. Not coming back and bitching like the rest of the techs would hope for. GAH it sucked...

Also i still want to go up to bestlie or compussr and bring my HUGE ass 75LB cube case water cooled with SLI 6800GT's, A64 3700 oced 9x315 and ask them to install a NIC card for me......oh the look would be priceless. I would also have a friend with me with a hidden camra just to take the pic...maybe one day i will do it....but i still love giving shit to the sales morons..and yes i do rip off bestlie and compussr...but i do it in a way of going to a customer there and saying i can build these machines for FAR less, FAR better, and overall anything they wanted....pisses the sale dick off so much...hey i can't stand ripping people off...it really pisses me off and bothers me ALOT...oh well...

so i go in and ask why i didnt get a call back when thay were hireing and thay siad "well may be this isnt the job for you" im like WTF i have 10+ years working with PCs i have worked sales be for and have a few certs

no wonder the ppl there dont know JACK SHIT unless you fit there "profile" thay dont even LOOK at the rest of the ap

Well, I think they're right. It isn't the job for you. You could probably get a much better job, seeing as you have 10+ years experience working with PC's, and you have worked sales and have a few certs. You could get a better job than BestBuy, surely.

Well, do that, but don't actually let them touch the damn thing... Seeing as they're so F'ing stupid (Well some of them, anyway) they'd probably somehow manage to screw your system up, and I don't think you'd want that. And don't take pictures, record a video. :) With sound, you have to have sound.

according to the guy a couple posts back they probably thought you could fix the computer too well and they wouldn't be able to milk customers for all their hard earned money. Its kinda sad they can get away with this..and the only way they can get arrested for stealing is if there is some undercover investigation. On the other end all they need is the stores word and the customer can get thrown in jail.

Has anyone seen the Geek Squad service/lesson vouchers? Those things are hilarious, I'm afraid of what they would do messing with my computer. I make mega bucks fixing stuff they do under the tables. One time the phone company spent 10 hours of paid time trying to get a dsl line to work. So they leave, say they are to far from the router/etc blahblahblah. I go over to this perons house, look at the modem. The dsl/sync light is off, maybe the phone company isn't wrong....except it worked when I installed it a few days ago, perfectly fine. So I decide to do whats logical, see what the modem is connected to, rj11 in modem fine, check. other end of the cable, hm, whats this....the frigging jack had been ripped out of the wall!!!! god help us if this is the way people work on stuff.

lets see 20hrs at $10/hr(what i get) = not enough for a high end card

Its called saving. Try it sometime. Seriously, when I want to buy something computer related, I wait until I have atleast double the amount the product is. This way, when I buy the product, I have enough cash to get me through for a good while until I get my next paycheque.

Grandma = Dead ;) No-one in my family has money for that kind of thing anyway. And, my family is quite split up geographically. So that's outta the question really. :p Can't wait to get a job...>.>

Working retail does that to you. And, stealing more than $200 is a felony in VA, so a lot of people are arrested for felony charges.

Astaroth

so it's legal to steal something under $200 in VA?

Well, it's hard for the girl to know WTF a graphics card is.

Think about it guys, you work in the return department for a cosmetics store. How the f*ck yo gonna know the difference between foundation and emulsion powder? See my point? Even if she checked to see if the serials and stuff matched, his "friend" could just take off the stickers from the 6800GT and replace them with the ones in the Ti4600... I know it doesn't excuse the beheavior, but just trying to show that something that is second nature to people that are into computer hardware may not be the same for someone who is not. ;)
i think it was already established that the poster's friend was a thief and that any type of rationalization of his bevavior was plain immmature.

If I were to work in a cosmetics store, I would make sure that I knew what I was selling. Even though I know that my sales' skills stink, knowing the products is certainly a good idea.

And i will possibly do the video with sound......so i have a documentation on there fuck up...so if they do mess ANYTHING up i can sue them for negligence ;)

Also i could be a REAL ass and say my machine always gives me this BSOD. and have them try and figure it out. :D

I've recently had three friends just buy new computers. One dumped 4 grand into a sony Vaio and got a x300 video card. When he talked to the sales guy he was told it was the top of the line card out there.

Next guy went to Best Buy and bought an E-Machine and was told the graphics card (integrated I think or something) would run all the top of the line games.

My third friend went to a computer surplus spot and just bought bfg 6200 256 oc for 399 canadian.

I dropped some of my newly aquired [H]ard knowledge on em and all but the guy with the Sony Vaio had buyers remorse. Is this typical in the commercial market or were these guys just seen coming?

4 grand.....
any ole' [H]er could build a box supporting dual socket OpteronX2s, SLI GTXs, Raid 0 15k rpms, a watercooling system, and still fall under 4 grand.

but that equates to an air cooled vaio with an X300? thats a prime example of a ripoff

It's got 2....but thats not the point.

Going in and asking them to do a simple task. And having them strugle would be GREAT comedy.. :D

It would be funny if you walked in with your box to make your "movie" and the guy there actually knew what he was doing. :)

Although this may be true, that's not a very good attitude in my opinion. They are just trying to do their job by helping you. You can just say "no thanks" and be on your way, but saying what you said isn't necessary. It's just a job for them, and I think if a customer is letting a salesperson persuade them into buying a bad product for alot of money, it's the customer's fault. Do your homework

the thing is all i said is nope, i'm fine... now i'm 15... looking at computer hardware.. not the actual rip-off computers.. you'd think that i'd know what i am looking for... but i just hate it, around x-mas time, they keep persisting on selling my something and i just keep saying "NO"

and how is saying "no thanks... i'm fine" a bad thing to say to the salesman? last time i looked that was something you'd say if you have something called ""manners""

and also... i do my homework.... if i didn't i probably would've ended up asking one of the sales guy for help... luckily i do all of my shopping on the egg :)

You know, not everyone reads internet forums every day trying to figure out what teh m0zd ubar 1337 [H]4rdW423z is. Just because the big chain stores don't hire knowledgeable people doesn't make it acceptable to take advantage of them. It might even look pretty goddamn immature and stupid if you were a 3rd party observer...you gotta start learning somewhere and you might as well get paid for it.

It's up to the people that know what they're doing to educate others, not ridicule them. Although it is possible to do both, it's not anywhere near as effective when you piss the people off you're trying to enlighten. Do what I do, stand there watching customers and when they pick up the generic PSU that costs the same as a more powerful Antec, tell them what they should be buying and why. When the salesperson asks you anything, say "I'm just browsing, thanks".

I like when people complain about the high prices and the incompetent staff as though if they owned the store it would be so much different. They can't afford to pay anyone that actually knows anything about computers. Hiring $20+ an hour sales staff to sell bullshit HP and Sony PCs to average folk isn't exactly a good business model.

And if you return your 5 year old POS vid card for in the box of a brand new $400 video card you're a real winner, you'll get what's coming to you eventually...especially if your dumb ass paid with a credit card.

I did mean under $200 is a misdeamenor, which ultimately isn't that bad. A felony charge will really mess up your life.

And as for blaming the girl who took back the card, how many people here are knowledgeable enough to tell one video card from another by the PCB design? Oh, and the other 20,000 products in a retail store too? If you can do that, I can recommend a good job that pays $8 an hour, at most, for you. Sadly, it costs more to pay people who know what they are doing as CSR/cashiers than it does to take the occasional hit from someone returning a wrong video card. That does not, however, excuse someone from doing it. It's still stealing.

And if they put it on the shelf again, and someone brought it, thinking it was what the box stated. The person may take it back, and maybe get someone who can tell the difference. He'd probably get charged with theft, and it'd be because of that dumb friend.

Soul Survivor, I get your point, but it really wouldent be that hard to educate employees. Hell you could train them in a 1 hour class, and create a Color coded system.

1. Ask customer "What do you want to do with your computer"

If customer is a gamer recomend the cards with the Green dot first, if they are a internet/email person recomend a card with the "red dot"

this is dumbed down and simplified, but with some thought it wouldent cost that much money/time/effort to make somthing like this happen.

I work for a Retail Grocery store in south texas, and they spend quite abit of money and time educating employee's.. hence the reason we are #1 Grocery store in south texas.

Regards,
Mike

they already have a system like that in place. it's called the "Price System". If the customer is a gamer you recommend the most expensive item, if they are an internet/email person you recommend the most expensive item, so on and so forth.

No, most stores offer no warranty/replacement whatsoever on refurbs or returned items.
