Best Underrated/Underhyped PC game?

Yeah, Riddick was fucking great... though I don't think that was particularly underhyped or anything... then again, I talk to a lot of people who play mainly console games, so perhaps that's why...

anyway, my vote goes to Heavy Metal FAKK 2. It's an older game (2000, I think), but it's aged surprisingly well, IMO, and it's easily my favorite Quake III-engine based action game.

I would say the Homeworld series and probably Red Faction.

Homeworld series was just... it's such an awesome game it's hard to explain. Cataclysm not so much but 1+2 were just wow.

Red faction was so much fun at lan partys =D

PREY was surely one of the most pathetic games ever.. I literally through it in the trash.

Naw, Prey was a decent game. It's actually an example of the exact opposite purpose of this thread which is to identify non-hyped games that were great. Prey was overhyped to the max "revolutionary gravity gameplay" or some such crap, and then just turned out to be OK.

Oh, another vote for Chronicles of Riddick. Painkiller came out of nowhere also and was a blast.

Tron 2.0: Great unique look and lots of fun to play an unconventional shooter
Darwinia: Unlike any strategy game I've ever played, looked great and had a moving story.

Agree with the Rise of Nations, that game was, and is, a lot of fun. I'm still playing Homeworld 2, not sure if that's too old to be considered at all. Freelancer might have gotten a bit repetitive, but it was a lot of fun to play too.

EVE Online.

It certainly has a steep learning curve, but when you start to understand it (e.g.: join a corp with alliances and start roaming around 0.0 space) the game is incredible fun.

I'm looking forward to the graphics upgrade and new features to be released this fall.

I'm glad someone else mentioned Evil Genius, or else I was going to. Sims meets Take over the world? Sign me up. Sadly Vivendi dropped the ball big time on advertising, and the game didn't take off. I remember it won a few awards at the E3 (2004? maybe?) and the demo got me hooked. I still play it to this day.

I thought of another... Freedom Fighters. (When Russia invades the US). It's a 3rd person shooter, but was great I thought. It got awesome reviews all across the board.
A very solid entry for an action TPS. I find myself playing it when I am between newer games and just need some shoot-em-up fun.

Mafia was a great game when it came out, even though it ran like crap on my computer.

I recently bought a few of these games on eBay. Riddick, Planescape: Torment, NOLF2, Rise of Nations, oh and Homeworld!

P: T is already very expensive due to limited supply (I "got lucky" and grabbed it for $25 shipped) but sounds like it is available on Gametap. I have a vague feeling that Riddick may end up with a small premium as people get more excited about it. It was actually one of the more expensive games I bought recently on Half/eBay.

You guys realize this is UNDERHYPED games right? Quake 2? Prey?... How in any way were these underhyped?

Underhyped = games very few have heard of or played

Flatout 2 is a great racing game. No one ever mentions it. The destruction derby mode is awesome.

As far as Call of Juarez, I got it for free with a Newegg deal. It installed Starforce. I uninstalled the game, Starforce, and threw it in the garbage. I never even ran it.

The Homeworld series is great. Good story and great gameplay (still the only full 3D RTS)?

Rise of Nations. Barely sold any copies but I think it was better than the Age series.

I agree. RoN was very good and almost no one has heard of it.

He also says "underrated," and a game that was hyped up, critically panned, and then rediscovered is worth a mention.

As another counterpoint, I'd say that Planescape: Torment is extremely hyped right now, albeit not in mainstream mass media channels. I'll find out soon whether it's justified.

Go to the game's website. There's a driver or some kind of update you'll need to get the game to work. I remember having that problem, too.

Seconded, I had the same issue also. Something to do with nVidia cards if I recall. I googled for the fix to find it. I'll post what it is when I get home, I have the file on my pc in my riddick file folder.

Edit: Looks like theres an OpenGl patch on Gamecopyworld from the looks of it.

I've just realized that I posted mine in the wrong thread. Whoops...That's what happens when I don't get enough sleep. ;)

agreed played the xbox version all week when I got it.

I just got the game...I'm only 10% through it, and I'm loving it so far. Its a very original game. One of the few games that I actually feel like I am actually the character in the game. Is there in action in it besides making decisions, though?

I know, man.

Noobs on here posting games like "Halo 2", etc.

How about a little game called

MAFIA

A good underhyped game that is coming out this month is Fury.

A pure PvP mmo. I played in the Fury Challenge Beta event and had a blast.

I agree that NOLF and The Last Express were underrated. I'd also add Divine Divinity if you're an RPG fan or Nox if you're an action fan.

Anyone hear of Nexus: The Jupiter Incident? I haven't played it but I remember a while back I was at a Best Buy and saw that it dropped from its release price to $20 just a few weeks after its release. Then I read an article on most underhyped/underated games, and Nexus took the lead, so went to BB to pick it up, and it jumped back up to $40 lol. I never got it, but heard it was good.

I have that one. I got it for $8 at Half-Price Books. It's alright. The graphics are really impressive, but the game itself is not that great.

Nox was an awesome game, hack and slash RPG like Diablo. I had a lot of fun with that game. I saw it on Gamespot a couple weeks ago and had nostalgia to go and find it... but I don't own it anymore :(

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It came out the same day as Half-Life 2, and got completely overlooked by most people.

Still playing Vampire:Bloodlines, and just finished NOLF2 last week. Also got back into Evil Genius, (THAT's a game that needs a sequel imho) and may try to see if i can get a few of my older games to play.
I agree that Tron 2.0 wasn't bad, but it didn't really get all that much attention compared to other games. Dungeon keeper series wasn't really hyped, but it was a good series that would be great for a remake or sequel. (Overlord was similar but not the same)
I may be the only one, but i do still enjoy playing Ghostmaster and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to it. (Did the makers go out of business?)
Wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to Theme Hospital that didn't suck also...
All in all, the games above weren't bad, but didn't really for the most part get the attention they deserved.

Supreme Commander was not underhyped/underrated in any way, its definately OVERHYPED and OVERRATED. The graphics are bland, the default interface is terrible, and the gameplay is no where near as complex as Total Annihilation. There's a reason it doesnt have many players, and it's not because it was underadvertised (like TA was). Whenever I play it I feel as if Chris Taylor and the dev's didnt pour their heart and soul into it like they did with Total Annihilation, which was truly ahead of its time. It feels as if they just slapped a game together to make a buck.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines was a nice gem though, it has some really dedicated fans too, who routinely bring out unofficial patches to fix bugs since the company sadly went under. It had a real nice atmosphere, soundtrack, and dialogue. I loved that schizophrenic chick Jeanette ;)

I still play Trackmania Sunrise. Love it. I'll pick up United soon. I miss the online play-- not many people play Sunrise anymore online. :/

Also Live for Speed. My steering wheel needs repairing, but once that's back in order I'll be playing LFS everyday again. :)

Overrated : Halo 3

Underrated: Star Wars: Rebellion. Sure, the micromanagement got annoying and the ship combat sucked, but you could build Star Destroyers and squash the puny Rebels. And you could send Vader on assassination missions. As a SW fanb0y, this game was a dream come true. :p

Gotta say I agree with everyone else about Riddick EFBB. I love the hand to hand combat and overall feel of the game. It's definitely worth playing and I find it more fun then Far Cry or Half Life 2.
