Best Underrated/Underhyped PC game?

In your opinion, Whats the best game in recent years that didn't get the hype or advertising that it deserved? I'm looking for those diamonds in the rough.

EDIT: Also post what you enjoyed about the game...storyline, gameplay, etc...

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Dreamfall

I thought these were better than Half-Life 2.

I've played Dreamfall, kinda seemed the the FF series without the fighting...

I think I might go purchase Riddick, what makes it so good...Can you elaborate?

Rise of Nations. Barely sold any copies but I think it was better than the Age series.

Riddick: EFBB drowned a bit in the waiting for HL 2 and Doom 3 just like Far Cry however it as well as Far Cry got tons of hype after it was released. So it´s not underhyped anymore I would say.

Rise of Nations came as a bit of a surprise. Maybe a one hit wonder Rise of Legends wasn´t as good.

Test Drive Unlimited for me was much better then expected.
I would also say HALO 2 since everyone talk about how crappy it is despite I had more fun with it then either HALO or now HALO 3... Loved the Arbiter parts instead of the meh ridiculous master chief character and the story was actually quite interesting if jumpy.
Had a superb pacing through out which HALO 3 only matches 60 % of the time.

Though it´s kind of strange to referr to HALO titles as underhyped I know lol.

Prey

Call of Juarez

Condemned: Criminal Origins

Specially last 2, were fucking amazing.

Chronichles of riddick. Amazing graphics for the time, loved the first person hand to hand combat
Call Of Juarez. Great Graphics, Gameplay.
Trackmania United, Cracking online multiplayer and thousands of community made tracks.

Riddick.

Cool stealth system and literally F*CKING AWESOME close quarters combat. I have to agree with the guy who liked this game better than HL2.

To be honest, I have no idea why Chronicles of Riddick is (as far as I know) the ONLY fps game in which you can use your adversaries rifle/shotgun/pistol to inflict major punishment upon it's wielder. It's the epitome of coolness, yet only one developer actually used the idea.

i would have to say the most underrated pc game ever is probably the no one lives forever series. Almost no one i know actually knows about this game or how it was when it came out.

I'm going to go with Conqueror AD1086, which was a Sierra (I think Sierra I forget now) medieval game released around 1994.

It was PLAGUED with bugs.. plagued! Which is why it turned out to be a complete flop. Awesome play though, when it worked. You were a Knight in charge of a fiefdom and would travel to jousting tourneys, slay dragons, build armies, etc. If you attacked a castle and broke into the walls you would begin fighting in first person with various weapons you selected.

It had a lot of features that I wish the Total War guys would incorporate, as I really enjoy TW, but I enjoy the strategic map parts of it. I'm not a big fan of the actual in game fighting

i can't get ridick to work on my pc. says bs about opengl 1.5. i guss i have to roll back my vid driver. which is friggin gay

Prey

Call of Juarez

Condemned: Criminal Origins

All 3 of those games are excellent. Call of Juarez I found to be quite challenging and tough! It also looked good and had interesting gameplay...

A game I actually spent many hours playing was Just Cause. I had little to no bugs in that game and ended up finishing it. I loved taking out the posh drug-lord mansions and using their chopper to fly to the next mission or killing spree area. It felt like a Grand theft auto : Farcry game. The area you could roam was huge, and had city locales as well as cliffs, jungle and small villages. I would recommend it to anyone.

Besides Painkiller which was mentioned, I also wanted to give a shout out to Trackmania United. A game with unlimited tracks to race and if you build tracks, to show off your talent, some of the best scoreboard and results implemented in any PC game with detailed leaderboards you can narrow down to state / province, country. The best part is you can race on any server since ping isn't important, and any map since they are at most a hundred kbs in size and you download them instantly, with many being well crafted and detailed. Easy to get into, hard to master its an excellent package. :)

+1 to Riddick, my second favorite single player FPS behind HL2.

Don't forget the Freedom Force games, both are excellent and quite unique.

Indigo Prophecy - great story, mature, thought provoking and downright strange.

Go to the game's website. There's a driver or some kind of update you'll need to get the game to work. I remember having that problem, too.

this game was awful, appeals to a select few.
Disagree. Psychonauts is top class. Ridiculously original level design, clever puzzles, some of the best immersion I've ever seen in a game. The ONLY downside is a tendency of the game to regress into "find this, get that, collect these" gameplay in between the main levels.

Hell yeah, that game was cool for the time.

Indigo Prophecy - great story, mature, thought provoking and downright strange.

This game was pretty cool. It didn't really do what it said, with the "real time decisions effecting the entire story", but it was still a cool game.

To add to the list
Evil Genius
Overlord – I am not a fan of fantasy games like this, but Overlord is pretty fun
Beyond Good and Evil - personally I didn’t really care for the game, but most of my friends love it. Oddly enough, any chick I give it to also loves this game.

I thought of another... Freedom Fighters. (When Russia invades the US). It's a 3rd person shooter, but was great I thought. It got awesome reviews all across the board.

Try Planescape Torment (Available on Gametap IIRC).

A rare RPG in which the goal is to role-play, rather than fight and make numbers go up or down. The game is centered around story.

Universal Combat j/k

I'll agree with Riddick and Painkiller. For a straight up shootrer I enjoyed Painkiller far more than Doom3 or Quake4. Never even bothered to finish Doom3 once I made it to the hell level and I am still slogging through Quake4. Painkiller I never stopped playing it until I was finished. If you like games like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor etc. then Hidden&Dangerous2 is a game that got less love than it deserved. The control scheme is more complex than those games but IMO the gameplay is better.

Should just add, if you like the GTA type of games then Mafia is also worth playing and is similar to the GTA games. It just so happens that the people who made Mafia also made Hidden&Dangerous2.

Oh yea, same company made Vietcong which is quite good too.
