Best speakers under $50

P.S. I don't mean anything 'uber' I just want something with decent sound... some of the stuff out there is poop.

There is no good speaker under $50. I'm not trying to be an elitist here, but a good 3" full-range driver (Hi-Vi B3S) alone is $10-$12... If you're looking for something good for a good price, check out www.diyaudio.com but don't expect to make something that owns for like $20 ;)
 
Best bet is Cerwin-Vega V5Ms when on sale. You can usually get a pair on sale for $40-50. BUT you need a receiver or amp of some sort to power them.

Reason I say best bet, is they are possibly the cheapest speaker I have seen that isn't anywhere near as bad as the bookshelf speakers KLH has been pumping out in that price range recently.

There may be better used though, however the V5M is video shielded as well. It suffers from a rather tinny treble, and has heavy bass emphsis, but is a decent speaker overall if you are putting a $50 price on the pair.

Just don't go expecting hi-fi for $50. But you can find good sounding speakers around $150 and up if you look around.


If you are talking PC speakers, just get a cambridge soundworks set and deal. They are definately not hi-fi, but I found their larger "soundworks" system (normally $80) to be a very nice system overall...treble was lacking, and so was some midbass, but overall the sound is pleasing. Look at their smaller setups, they have one at about $40 that might be up your alley. try before you buy though.

Directron clearance section, HK595? The refurb one with beige satellites and a black subwoofer. It's not the best sounding speakers, but for the under $50 they are a decent buy. The main problem I have noticed with them is that it is that the converter is underpowered for the speakers. There is a noticeable fade in volume when the music gets loud for long periods of time.
 
I bought some Logitech X-230s for my niece's computer. For $35.00 they sounded very good.

The X-230 has proven to be a great 2.1 system for this price range. Though the main speakers use only four 2" drivers, the Frequency Directed Dual Driver (FDD) Technology does an excellent job of reproducing music and the system works rather well for casual gaming. Due to the special driver design and the tuning of the enclosures, Logitech has managed to produce a great sounding product. Overall sound quality is impressive and the subwoofer performs incredibly well, producing large amounts of bass if desired while enhancing music and the gaming experience.

Best Buy is clearing out the entire KLH line, and they make some decent speakers last I heard. My local Best Buy has a pair of $90 KLH bookshelf speakers on sale for $29 right now... Get yourself a cheap reciever and you have a decent setup.
 
Jesus, these Polk R30's are just going insane. MSRP is $400 and outpost has them for $40 with no rebates. I'm trying to figure out a way to justify buying them...

The above mentioned speakers are also a good purchase, but these Polks are unbeatable at this price.
 
Unless I'm getting my wires crossed from when I saw those earlier, the MSRP is for a pair and the Outpost price is each for over $100 once you get a pair shipped. But it's still good.

Yeah, they're selling EACH speaker for $40, so a pair would cost $80. You have to admit the way they list it is pretty misleading.
 
Selling per speaker is much better once you get used to it. If you need front speakers, including center, that's an odd number. Forcing you to buy pairs is bad!
 
Generally the odd numbered one is the center, and it's a different 'type' than the satellites. However Outpost clearly says what they're selling and how many, so there's nothing to blame them over. You're still getting a good price, and it's just stupid if you claim they're doing something wrong because they're not priced even lower and you didn't bother to read the title first.
 
per speaker pricing is fine and dandy, but the thing is very few speakers are sold per piece, and are pairs anyways, so it's a moot point.

I do agree that pricing should be easier to understand though. More places need to do /ea or /pr after their prices.

Nope, those arent the ones. I went to Best Buy to purchase the ones I saw earlier, and they were sold out. The ones you linked to are extremely small outdoors speakers, around 6 inches tall. The ones I saw were about 20 inches tall and sounded pretty good for the price.
 
Dude, i'd have to agree with Rix2357
The Harmon Kardon 595's are a decent buy. Got 2 pairs from DELL a few years back and have been happy ever since. Multi channel input..so you can hook up the digital output to it. Cant say that they're the best speakers in the world, but iv gotten some clean sound out of them. They emulate 4 channel sound really well ;)

Well, the OP needs to come back here and specify whether he is looking for speakers with amp and sub for that $50. Because there are also recommendations for just speakers alone in this thread.
