"Best" Gaming Mouse Pad ?

This might be considered slightly off-topic, but it's a question that's been on my mind for a bit.

What exactly is the purpose behind slick surfaces? For ball mice, there was always a tendency for the ball to "stick" if too much pressure is applied to the top of the mouse, but since opticals/lasers have no such issues, why use a slick surface? I find that with my generic pad, I can make precise 90s, 180s (and any angle in-between), I can track targets very well, and my tracking doesn't seem to be affected by pressure exerted on the mouse itself (nor do I think that my mouse ever has issues tracking on it). So, what exactly is it about frictionless surfaces that is conducive to better mousing?

Many gamers find they can be more accurate on slicker surfaces.

Well Kyle, I thnk you've sold me on getting a ratpadz xt. I'll be ordering within the next few days as I should be getting my schooling refund check today or tomorrow.

If you dont like it or have issues, let me know and we will make it right. No risk to you.

Alright, I bit and just ordered an XT. Have yet to be steered wrong by [H]. Will post about my experience after i receive it and use it a bit.

Xtrac hybrid. The most perfect mousepad I've ever used; cross between cloth and hard plastic.

I tried the ratpad for a while and didn't like it much. My main problem with it was that it sits too high above the desk surface and it felt almost too slick. I like some resistance from my pad.

Another vote here for Ratz.

About a month ago i ordered 2 GS pads for my laptop and my desktop... I use them with Razer mice (teflon feet) and its spectacular. You can't go wrong with these pads and the XT is probably even better. For me, the GS was there at the time and it has not worn down at all but i dont consider myself a "heavy mouser" i guess is the term.

Question and maybe im retarded but... is Ratzpadz a subsidiary of [H]ard Kyle?

If it is then im glad i supported you!

Keep it real

I disagree with slicker surfaces being more accurate. You have less resistance running on a frozen lake but how accurately can you stop, go and maneuver (sp)? I like cloth mouse pads for the extra resistance which translates to accuracy to me.

IMO, for low sensitivity fps gamers, there's only one solution

Destrukt 'DKT' mousepad.

Best pad ever. It's a legend.

It's the consistency of movement offered by slick pads that makes them appealing. It is the difference between limiting and kinetic friction. There is a very small (I have tested it myself) difference in the force required to start a mouse moving on an eXactMat or funcpad and the force required to keep it moving. The difference is larger on a cloth pad--it takes considerably more force to overcome the limiting friction than it does to overcome kinetic friction, which results in increased inaccuracy.

I don't know much compartively, but I just got the Xtrac Ripper of newegg and it seems perfect for what I needed, and is one of the cheapest you can buy online.

I own KB Accessories Inc, that owns Ratpadz.com and the product line. So, not a subsidiary, a totally different company.

I might have to try the new Ratpadz, I had a GS at one time and literally wore it out, it had like, grooves in an arc from the mouse moving side to side :p

I don't understand it either. Why is slicker better? Cloth gives you control, so if you already aim really well, cloth gives you precision. I've tried the func, steelpad 5l, ratpad gs, razer exactmat etc etc. All of those made my mouse out of control and sliding all over the place.

This is exactly what I came in here to say, only I didn't know how to say it so I'm glad someone could explain it because I had no idea how to describe it. :D

I got an MX518 mouse a week ago because I was getting fed up with the crappy mouse here at home (on college break) and the feet on my MX500 at school have worn down completely. There was a big improvement with the new mouse but I was STILL having problems with the mouse "sticking" as I moved it from resting position. My sister asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I showed her where to order me a Ratpadz.

Anyway, after playing with it for a day (Counter Strike: Source) I can say the improvement is truly incredible. The biggest problem for me with accuracy (besides my shaky hands) was the inability to make precise aim adjustments, especially shooting at long range. I would be tracking a target, stopping whenever my enemy stopped, and then to start tracking again I'd have the little stick which would cause me to overadjust my aim and miss my target, ending in my death. Now with the Ratpadz there is basically no friction or stick to overcome from rest which allows me to, A) swing around much faster and B) make small adjustments much easier. Even though I've been getting a lot better at CS:S lately the Ratpadz removed by biggest limitation and my stats were way up in just one day, consistently i was getting 1.5 and better KPD ratios and landing among the top 5 in servers. Usually I'm bellow a 1 KPD ratio and in the middle or lower pack of the scoreboard.

The pad is also great for non-gaming use as well, I can definitely see the precision paying off in digital photo editing and making all my mousing tasks easier and smoother. I don't know what took me so long to get one! If you're on the fence about these (as I have been for years) then please take my advice and pick one up, it is absolutely worth the money and I promise your gaming accuracy will improve vastly.

EDIT: I do have one question. Would it be safe to use rubbing alcohol on the Ratpadz to clean it? I find this is the quickest, easiest way to clean things like this and I always have some nearby clean my mouse and other things I get a lot of use out of.

Just got the new Logitech MX Revolution, and it seems with its larger feet it now picks up the worn down spot(s) on my ratzpad GS. Previous to the Ratz, I've owned exclusively Everglide. Both suffer from the same problem of spots wearing down. The Everglides I've owned seemed to at least last a bit longer. I'm more interested in a slick long lasting surface than a hyper precise mat, as I don't do the max dpi sniper shooting in FPS's.

So what would be the best slick durable surface, not bigger than a GS mousepad, that would work with my Logitech MX Revo?

Thanks!

A few of you mentioned that the teflon feet wear down after a while, but where do you get replacements? (I have a G5)

I'm just getting used to my G5 after replacing my very-used and old Kensington Expert (Optical Trackball). I'll keep the Ratpadz XT in mind though if I do upgrade my generic mouse pad...

The Ratpadz XT is a much more durable product than the GS. Try it, if you don't like it, I will buy it back from you and pay shipping to boot.

How long does the Ratpadz XT last? I'm thinking about picking one up...

Will it make the G5 "feet" last for longer? (Is that even an issue with mice?)

My G5's and G7's feet have never exhibited wear problems of any kind, and I've had it for a long time. And the XT should last several years. A lot of people are still using the old original ratpadz that came out years ago, and the XT is basically the same thing.

It just came; I'm pleased at the smoothness and accuracy of the Ratpadz XT....I'm just tyring to get used to the size. I had been using a smaller mouse-pad (generic), and it will take a bit of time to both get used to and take advantage of the breadth of this new one.

I just received my customized Func Archetype and it is amazing. I had no idea of the quality by looking at pictures. This thing is sweet in person. Also my 5 yr old IE3.0 glides like never before.

Sorry I had not been checking this thread. Yes, the Ratpadz XT addresses all those issues with longevity and mouse feet wear.

Thumbs up for the Razer Exact Mat w/ the wrist rest.

Big area and double sided with different textures. Made out of aluminum with a hard plastic as the surface. The wrist pad feels really good too. Was a little too slick at first (especially the Speed side) but got used to it eventually. Also the hard plastic makes it easy to clean when I have cookies and other food stuffs in the area.

RatPadz are great..

I originally got a couple from Kyle when he made his first run which was hell like summer 2001?? not sure
I still am using them almost 6 years later..
PADZ.jpg

It has went through thousands of hours of standard use and
hundreds of hours of counter-strike, WOW and other game use and still works great..
I originally used it oriented in the other direction and you can see the wear on the top
that was from about four years of use.. I turned it sideways when I moved to a smaller
desk.. It actually fits against my keyboard perfectly and is great in a sideways orientation..

hey what would be a good mouse pad to use for a Logitech G5 Laser mouse? I was thinking about the Ratpadz XT or the Func Smooth Pad those would be good for laser correct as you guys stated in previous posts. OR would the steelpad be good or not recommended. Let me know what ur advice is

Cloth pads work great w/ lasers. Ive used Steel pad 5L Qck+ and a ripper XXL and the steelpad is by far the smoothest, and most comfortable.

the Firepad in one of the pics above looks pretty kool though.

I'm hooked on my Razer Mantis Speed pad. It's perfect for my Razer Diamondback mouse.

func archetype or ratpads ??? which one would be better for my mx1000 ???

As stated, give the Ratpadz XT a shot and if you don't like it, I will buy it back and pay shipping too.

Very soon, I will be able to compare the Func Archetype and possibly the Ratpadz on the DA. I'm fairly happy w/ the EM Control side + DA tho. It's good times. :D:D:D
