+1

BF has always been about the multiplayer, and that should absolutely be their biggest focus.

Certainly, I'm all for them creating a truly excellent SP experience as well, but that's not what people are playing the BF series for... they're in it for the MP.

+1 for you too.

The SP is for the console crowd and casual PC gamers to buy it, DICE will sell a ton of copies that way. The loyal BF fans and hardcore MP gamers are buying it for the MP. I'll play the MP day one and postpone the SP for later.
A MP only game is a hard sell to console gamers unless it's Halo.

Has anyone got any idea as to how much the BF3 servers are going to cost per slot?

Most of the current BF2 servers I've seen are $2/slot ($120 for 64 players), and the BC2 servers are at $1.50 per slot ($48 for 32 players).

Can someone answer my question?

The one thing I dislike about choppers as they are currently in BC2 is that once you do land that rocket, you don't always get the kill(s)....I just sploded their helo, they should die lol. The things helos do in game are pretty close to lifelike capabilities...the reason we dont see helos running rape missions in reality is because of personnel weapons like a stinger surface to air launcher (I think BF2 had that). I think if players had the ability to carry stingers it would be hella different.

sounds like you are rolling with a Gustaf, The at4 and RPG are a one shot one kill for helo's. The Gustaf might be two because it is a anti-personnel weapon.

No, the helo behavior in the base game is ridiculous and unrealistic. They cannot absorb infinite small arms fire. I distinctly remember during the second Iraq War that a fleet of Apaches had to retreat back to base because of a lot of sporadic small-arms fire from Iraqis on the ground. The idea that you can't pump bullets into a helicopter and damage its rotors, blades, and cockpit is just absurd.

he means killing the persons inside instantly.

but for the people talking about taking down helos, get used to using the AT4.

I was talking about the basic flight mechanics mostly. You don't see pilots able to take the thing inverted and fly at a fixed altitude like that cause its just not possible...though I don't think ive seen someone do a barrel roll in game even though its possible....might have to try that out, lol.

I love using the tracer dart/Gustav combo...though is easily combated with flares. Its funny cause I like how if it misses the first time, its got infinite burn time. I watched a missle circle around a helo like 5 times before finally being able to hit the helo.

My friend sniped a pilot out of a helicopter right before I shot down the gunner with a rocket. It was epic.

Sniping pilots kicks ass. I haven't done it in awhile, but I had it done to me yesterday. It sucked, but I always admire the shooting skills even if they are virtual.

Take vehicle smoke as your vehicle perk.

I really wish more pilots would take this, flying a helo without it makes them a death trap, in some maps they're the only advantage the assault team have.

I'm going to give that a shot. I never even thought about that.

Yeah a good heli crew can completely turn around the game.

The flares basically work by removing a single tracer dart from your hull when they're used, so just deploy them once you've been darted and everyone will lose the lock. They slowly recharge but people find multiple darts in a row hard/impossible so chances of you getting darted and then shot down fall to virtually zero. The only thing that can take you down becomes AT4s and AA guns and extremely pro snipers (like me :p), most people cannot shoot the AT4 for shit, so just keep on the move.

All that air time you give to the gunners is going to completely trash the enemy team if they can aim correctly, and if you get someone repairing in the back seat you'll roll the enemy team.

I've gotten exceptionally good at it, but only because it seems most pilots spend too much showboating at low altitudes. Guidance isn't necessary when you can employ a bit of good sense prediction and timing :)

I take smokes in every vehicle on every map except Panama Canal where I take alt fire so I can shoot the tow missle from the Bradley.

The vehicle smoke is the best survivability item available. Get rid of the tracer, retreat and repair.

And as for small arms fire taking down choppers; sure it would be realistic, but it would be pretty damn annoying.

Personally, I take Hellfires over flares. The only reason you should get darted is if you're at a very low altitude (your own fault) or someone is either good with the tracer or just lucky. A good team of engineers darting tanks (and enemy helos too), with a good gunner w/ tracer, you can basically stroll right into the caps and take them at pleasure.

I do think they should have made some sort of flight time limit to RPG's though. I think once you've dodged a traced RPG circling 2-3 times in a row, you've proven yourself ;)

Depends on the small arms being fired. I think the heavier machine guns like the M240B and the M60E4 should be able to do it but lighter 5.56x45mm based stuff probably shouldn't. Or at least the gunships shouldn't have to worry about most small arms save for .50BMG based stuff like the M95 sniper rifle. The UH1 on the other hand and Blackhawks should be somewhat more vulnerable to hits from small arms.

You said it: It's a game.

Yes, it's a game. What's your point? Because clearly you missed mine: since there's no real-life rationale for the helo invincibility, and since it makes gameplay utterly retarded, there is no good reason for helos being the way they are.

The game is about infantry and vehicle ground combat and coordination. Helos immune to bullets ruin the gameflow. That two or three people out of thousands can hit a helo with an AT4 with some consistency changes nothing.

Again, this is why Vietnam is so much more fun. A few guys can coordinate fire and, after 20-30 seconds, down or repel a helicopter that's stalking the map. That's teamwork and that's balance - that's the way it should be.

It rarely happens but when it does, it's effective.

Usually you just have to get it started. I team chat "you can shoot these things down unlike in the base game" and light up the choppers myself with a jeep gun. Next thing I know, I see tracers for 3 or 4 guns in the air dart upward toward the helos. 30 seconds later, the chopper is smoking and retreating.

You can take out choppers with the heavy MG in the base game. It just takes a very long time and isn't really effective. However you mention a jeep gun / tank gun can absolutely take them out.

It's worthless in the base game because you can't even find a jeep with a gun; they all have these useless mortars. More to the point, it wouldn't do much anyway: even the tank machine gun does piddling damage in the base game. You could shoot at a helo for a minute and it might lose 30-40 points, complete waste of time.

The tank gun works better in Vietnam, and it sounds and looks a hell of a lot cooler as well.

The "real-life rationale" is irrelevant because it's a game. Whether or not making helis immune to small arms fire renders the gameplay "utterly retarded" is up to debate. I certainly don't feel that way.

New screenshots-n-stuff:
We're definitely getting exceedingly close to photorealism.

Think I'll upgrade my system but not my video card, get whatever card handles this game best around release time. Sound like a smart plan?

The smart plan would be to wait until release before upgrading anything unless you need an upgrade now for something else. Prices are surly to drop by the time this game is released.

Oh and btw, BF3 is certainly getting installed on my SSD. :D

Gonna have a "BF3" SSD. :p

Hmm....or maybe a pair of BF3 SSDs in RAID....drooolll...

Nah, overkill that will probably not net you anything yet cost you TRIM functionality. I have a couple games that load of my SSD and even just a single one has enough throughput that my CPU is pegged during the loading processes.

im so hyped for this console port, mouse acc tiny fov and scripted events BRING IT ON

Yep, mine too.

I remember having the first Raptor, and loading the map first and getting the tank before others "spawned". Was so great.

74GB Raptor brought much joy during those times. Now we're looking at the OCZ Vertex 3 for BF3; my how times change.

I'm afraid of all the marketing hype that they have about BF3 competing with CoD. I think it's a mistake to directly go up against another game like that and outright admit your going to blow a wad in advertising. One of the reasons why gaming can fail is the super high budgets. Just make a good game and the word of mouth is all you need. Companies can say that they need these big money makers to stay in business ... but if they were more careful with their money/budgets to begin with, they wouldn't.
