The same article also says that BF3 will be the first Battlefield where you will be able to fly "modern jets" :p.

Having never been shot at by a sniper myself, is the effect (or the principle/idea of the effect) realistic at all?

Not sure if it's realistic, but it definitely is an effective way of having enemy fire be of a suppressing nature. In RO, you can't even aim properly while bullets are whizzing past you, since your vision is too blurred. The same effect happens when artillery or other explosives are going off near the player.

"But the most impressive new touch was the blurring effect that happened when bullets hit nearby. The screen went blurry with a fish-eye lens, as if the player was suffering from tunnel vision.

That was the most impressive he saw? Great, this bodes well...

What a crap effect, keep my screen clear, keep motion blur and other blur out of the game, and don't impair my vision. So lame.

Like I'm suddenly going to have trouble seeing clearly just because bullets hits nearby, I've stood next to explosives going off and my vision was 20/20 the whole time.

A bullet hitting the ground next to you is so not dramatic, and you barely notice it. Actually firing the weapon is much more dramatic, if you can call it that. The only way you will have problems is if bullets are hitting something right next to your head, or in front of you, causing debris to hit you.

How hard is it do a little bit of research when making a game? So it can at least make sense if not being totally realistic. Just talking to someone who's served in Afghan/Iraq lately they'd know these things. Come on.

publicity stunts indicates to confidence but I hope we won’t see any major issues at release (server browser, crashing, weapon balancing, hit detection, etc.) and a 2GB patch every year only to fix couple of small bugs.

Neat effect but definately not realistic...explosions have jarred my vision but it lasted about as long as the shockwave takes to shoot past you so...not long and in the event that your shooting...it's not even somethin that registers visually unless like was said, shit kicks up in your face....it's a projectile moving faster than an eye can track without some sort of visual aid (hence tracer rounds).

Here I was thinking that video games were allowed to take liberties in stretching reality for the sake of a compelling gaming experience. Sure glad you set me straight.

NO THEY HAVE TO BE REALL!1!1!!1

People get to damn worked up over shit, 'specially when they haven't even seen it in action..

Like I said, it's a difference between totally realistic and believable/making sense. I understand that's way over your head, no worries.

I just started BC2 SP, its actually quite fun so far. Not sure why it got so heavily panned by users.

Wait till you get to the end you will understand why.

Btw just so you guys know the video shown at pax east was the same video shown at the GDC event a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, um, I've done two combat tours in Iraq. My first tour was as an infantry Marine. I earned my CAR during my first couple days in Mosul. I really don't want to play a game that accurately portrays combat. I've seen my share of it.

You would like the game to make sense though? To me, blurring vision when shot at sounds like a lame balancing attempt.

Combat sounds tedious and very stressful. With out the fear of death, you just have tedious.

You took an eye exam while you were getting shot at? That's pretty wacky.

commander mode dropped!!! fucksakes

jesus is this game heading towards a console port? if bf3 is basically bad company 3 with higher player count why bother?

my dark predictions of this game turning into a console port might come true

ahh well if this turns out to be BC3 them in out. i will stick with arma 2 and its project reality mod

Where have you been? Commander mode being dropped is old news and certainly does not translate to a sudden console port.

Like I said, it's a difference between totally realistic and believable/making sense. I understand that's way over your head, no worries.

Over my head, but yet, you are going by what a journalist has typed? Have you actually witnessed the game in motion, where the players view is blurred?

Your telling me, Your standing about 3ft from a wall, a bullet ricochets off said wall about head height, your not gonna flinch?

Journalist never said where the bullets where hitting. Just said nearby.. Nor did he say how long your vision is "impaired", could just be a split millisecond.

But over my head...

Anyways, Back on topic.

If you want it to look real, you need the motion blur. I don't know about you but when I am panning in real life with a gun, I see motion blur.

I'm not a follow the leader type player, so I'm glad it's dropped.
All players should have equal access to the battlefield.

I don't see blur. I just don't see some objects fully. Motion blur is the eyes not capturing everything. As such, when you pan fast in a game, it should display everything normally, and let your EYEs apply the blur.

Do you guys think I'll be able to run on max settings native res in bootcamp on my 27" iMac?

I kid I kid.

But seriously it is going to be expensive to build a dedicated gaming rig to push out max settings at 2560x1440 min 70fps. It will certainly look amazing I'm sure. Will definitely hold off as long as possible til I buy, maybe significantly after release. Built a computer in 05 specifically for bf2 that recently died, look forward to a return to pc gaming after playing fps on xbox (meh, m+k ftw).

I'm actually considering completely dropping satellite tv for a yr (~$100/month + $300 sunday ticket) to offset this most selfish of purchases. Gonna take some Jedi mind tricks to justify spending $1200 on essentially one game.

I'm sure it will get easier and easier to justify when you'll be able to play every new game for at least two or three years, and existing games like Metro 2033 that I'm guessing your 2005 beast might not have been able to handle. :)

Eyes do not naturally see motion blur, motion blur is a side effect of capturing moving objects in a scene with film which captures in discreet frames, that is to say each frame captures a slice of time based on the shutter speed of the camera. If objects are moving in that frame then their position exists over a range of space in the frame and that visually appears as a blur.

Remember that some of these are purely cinematic effects which are designed to reproduce the effects we see in movies, such as depth of field, motion blur.

Either way, I don't like fake blur. I'm playing a game, not watching a movie. There's a difference. I'm fine with some blur in cut scenes, animated sequences. I just don't want my screen to look smeared with some kind of gel every time I look around, or get shot at.

Just look at Crysis 2 for how shitty that looks. It only serves to reduce image quality, crispness.

It's also worth noting that the description by the article may simply be bad, they said blur from fisheye lens, a fisheye lens distorts the screen it does not blur it.

This effect is well known and understood, some people shooting weapons or being shot at get it, it's called tunnel vision and it can be triggered by the sudden rush of adrenaline, your peripheral vision drops away leaving only your focused vision, you can either black out part of the screen to achieve this or to keep full screen you can change the FOV or you can apply a fish-eye type effect where the centre of the screen is in focus and the edges are distorted. They probably use a mix of several of these effects.

I think it's a good system, when playing BC2 I see a LOT of people who are sitting on a roof, or in a window and a sniper bullet whizzes past their ear and I'm close enough to hear the bullet and see the impact, I get away from the windows yet they stand there as if nothing has happened and then 3 seconds later are shot through the face. Some people struggle with the subtle cues given in game to enhance game play, the more obvious they can make this the better.

BC2 fights tend to be more like duels, since even if you're shot at first, even hit with a couple of bullets, you can still win the duel, so instead of moving away you can just aim well and take down whoever is shooting at you. Provided you're quick enough, or the other player is bad enough. Your screen jerks a bit, but it's no problem when you're experienced enough.

That's why a lot of people don't move for cover in BC2, when they're shot at. Lately I've been playing only on Hardcore servers though, and people tend to be a bit more careful there, but not as any rule...

From what I've seen of BF3, it looks like they're going for a bit more realism than BC2 though, not as fast paced, and they probably want to encourage players to take more cover and not have duels.

I've yet to come across a game that even semi-accurately reproduces bullet sounds passing or hitting nearby as there is nothin subtle about it lol. It's possible though that it could take quite a bit of processing power to realtime plan out the bullet path and sound intensities along it's path and all that jazz...but like I said, the subtle effect that games have shouldn't be so audibly subtle.

That would be fine if games rendered at 200fps, but they don't.

Try watching some video footage shot with a very high shutter speed (i.e. no motion blur).

Doesn't look natural at all, does it? The frame rate is not high enough for your eyes to fill in the gaps.

Even at high frame rates, very fast movement will still produce a strobing effect without some kind of blur... I think it is a must for convincing motion, but you shouldn't notice it. That's why Crysis 2 at 60fps with blur looks so wonderful.

And yes, eyes do see blur - wave your hand or a pencil in front of your face quickly. Do you see a perfect image of it? Nope.

Well, I think Crysis 2 with its blur looks smeared and shit. Yes, at 60 fps.

I've never personally had a bullet shot at me so I wouldn't know, generally speaking the audio in BC2 is far better than all of its peers. Especially when it comes to effects being changed depending on your distance to the object and whether you're indoors or not, a heli taking off next to you makes a racket but when its 100ft overhead it make a very nice purr as it flys over not only is the volume different but so is the actual sound.

The bullets do tend to make a whiz as they pass you, and you can hear the crack as they're fired from far away, I guess the main problem is that people do not play with audio loud enough so that gunfire in the game sounds as loud as real life, if you were to crank your speakers that loud then it would probably sound a lot more realistic, but you'd have the police over in no time :)

try the advanced preset instead of the noobcore one and the www.rush-zone.com launcher to disable edgeAA, it should look pretty sharp, the launcher has a toggle for motion blur too but it doesn't seem to work, it's not that annoying tho imo. Especially when you up the fov.

Blur and framerate are usualy two different things, unless you use temporal AA like in halo reach / DMC4 http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1113341&postcount=1

I think the bullets-landing-nearby blur isn't an attempt to mimic real-life vision effects, I think it's the overall experience.

For example, I'd wager (although I have no direct experience) that bullets hitting the ground nearby from someone shooting at you would cause a spike in adrenaline. Your heart starts pumping faster, you start looking around in hyper mode, I think the game blur is trying to capture that feeling. They can't inject you with adrenaline as you sit at your computer, so to compensate they just tamper with what they can, the graphics of the game.

I think they will be, especially considering they deluxe edition includes several BF2 maps.

Any news about the vehicles available. The Airforce doesnt seem to ahve anything better to offer other than F22 for now.It would be nice to include the Lockheed AC-130 gunship in place of the usual Mortar strike [30 second blissfull time firing all the metal you can on ur enemy]
