Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

I care about total points, and I lead the scoreboard by helping my squad and completing objectives, even if I only have half or less the K:D of snipers who do nothing else.

I think thats what I prefer about BF is that I can feel like I'm playing a larger roll in the battle other than just having a high k/d ratio. I know a lot of people hate RUSH but there's really no topping it when it comes to judging a team's skill. One guy can't carry offense or defense in RUSH. You need at least half a 10 man team to be in sync to win.

Some of the issues he brings up ARE pretty important, IMO.

I hate not being able to manage the squad I'm in. If I have a bunch of retards or AFKers, I don't want to stay with them.

I hate one char (previously stated). Or even the ability to change my name. I'm fine with mine, but I've seen some pretty retarded ones that I'm sure people wish they could change.

And I hate not being able to call stuff out to squad/teammates.

They are claiming it will be added. They also made a few ambiguous statements indicating that if it is released, the context (Q) button will be used for most things, and comments like "bail out" will be among the few selectable phrases. Again, that's assuming DICE doesn't screw the PC community, which is what they've made a 5-year habit of doing.

But you still are forced to create a squad in Battlelog. In BF2 you could create, name, lock, invite, and kick people from the squad. Now you get 2-fewer slots, no ability to create a squad in game, and if you move to another squad you can't communicate with them verbally.

It will still be broken and limited as hell.

You aren't forced to do anything squad related on battlelog. How hard is to to tell your friend to join Hotel squad with you, then lock it? And if someone joins before that kick them. Not sure if you understand but they added these features into retail already.

If that's really how you feel then move along. it's not your job to 'save' the gaming community from BF3. i don't think people should buy volkswagens, but i don't swing by the volkswagen dealership three times a day to tell shoppers how awful they are.

Yeah, I'm not sure where you got that from. Hopefully not the same twitter feed from a dev manager as I did. 99% sure they said you have to form squads in Battlelog, and everything else is capable in game. That still implies that you have to make a squad in battlelog and can manage it in game. Otherwise, there is no reason to have any squad-related features in battlelog.

Scenario: Joined game, friend's squads are full (dammit 4-person squads!!), alt/tab to create in BL or just shit-outta-luck???

Where have you seen that you can CREATE squads in game?

Quite a change in tone. But to address your comment prior to editing, was I wrong in my comment that DICE has been essentially screwing/turning-its-back on the PC community for the past 5 years?

no you were not wrong because that's your opinion. some people have the mentality of "i can't believe how screwed i am as a gamer, i'm such a victim"...and some people aren't quite as fragile.

im very sad/pissed the beta is over. I got a whole 4 hours worth of play time and never got to try caspian thanks to my damn work lol. Finally got an entire day to play games only to find out the beta is over!!!! Oh well guess ill just have to buy the game and enjoy it later.

I love how even one of there PR guys admitted that this was an actual beta, although most people are used to an open-beta being a "demo" of sorts.

Glad to know I was right, even by industry standards. Hah

Only people who are delusional saw this as anything other than a beta.

I always assumed a beta was unfinished code that was used for feedback and testing. Never, when I have heard beta, have I thought 'demo' except for in the sense of being able to get a taste of the unfinished product.

It had better be unfinished code, otherwise we're in trouble!

However, I have seen enough of the Beta to know that the game is going to give me many, many hours great entertainment. I know when the game comes out it'll be all I'll be playing for some time.

i agree. ive been real bored the last few days without it.

I started playing BC2 while i wait for the release. While its nice actually hitting people i shoot at, i miss BF3 even more... especially prone! Cant wait for the release.

yeah i fired up BC2 again last night after being on hiatus during the BF3 beta. i was surprised at how fun the game is and how good it still looks. i half expected to be bored out of my mind after all the fun i was having in the beta.

i'm practicing flying choppers in BC2 in anticipation of BF3. it's something i never bothered to master in any BF game but i figure i'll give flying a shot in BF3. i know everyone says flying is very easy in BC2 and BF3...but i've never been a fan of flying games so it's all new to me (even if you don't constitute BF3 as a 'flying game'). turns out i blow donkey balls at it.

Nah, even their PR rep understood that many people in the industry release open-beta's as a means of testing distribution methods and general stability, and use it as a PR/demo.

Sorry you can't take your blinders off.

i really hate prone. it is so gay. what is the first thing you do when youre in a fire fight? gay it up and go prone.

Not sure if serious... >_>

So we're just supposed to stand there and fire away, not take cover, or do anything that might extend our life time?

Interesting.

Can the gay-associations stop? The last thing we need in this thread is some flamer coming in and ruining it with PC talk. :D

Are you one of those guys who gets inside a heli and promptly do a back flip and crash? :p

haha no i can keep the thing in the air....i just suck at getting my gunner lined up properly and i can forget trying to hit anything myself with the pilot-fired missiles. that and landing is a bit hairy, but that's a problem i rarely encounter since i always get shot down :D

Your logic really makes no sense.

You're on the battlefield, being fired at. You have the option of squatting and being a large target, or laying down flat and being a long/flat target. No cover within 30 yards(wtf were you doing out there anyways!), so those are your only two options.

Now, why do you think it's in the game?

Ohh, right! Survivability!

Unless there's a new definition of "missing" in the English dictionary.

Missing implies it will never be there. You may not need to look up the definition of "missing" over-generalization and implication is probably something to become familiar with though

Finally! Someone else gets it rather than keep yakking to me about its all about K/D ratio accomplishments on the game. Most forget that there is an objective/flag to WIN the map.

Going prone in a firefight presents a certain amount of risk as well. First off your head becomes about the only thing they'll be able to hit - and if they hit you in the head well we all know how that ends.

Second if you do win the firefight but took some damage and need to get out of harm's way to recover, it takes just a little bit more time to stand up - and while you're doing so you are completely helpless.

It is kind of obnoxious to play against people who's first reaction is to hit the deck when they get into a firefight, though.

Youre head is still visable while standing/crouching.. its a smaller targe so regardless prone is better. Hopefully you aren't playing lone wolf and your squad is supporting you, so when you get up from prone you are covered.

Reducing your own silhouette and returning fire increases your chance of survival in video games and IRL. As long as the hitboxes agree to the same idea.

.

Luckily for us, that's modeled in the game as well. It isn't like BF2 where going prone and getting back up was almost instantaneous.

FYI, picked up a MS XBOX360 controller today and flying helicopters in BC2 just became much more manageable. i went from a "chances are you're going to die as my gunner" pilot to a "this guy's pretty good, he just needs to keep it steady" pilot. in BC2, of course.

edit: this is in comparison to M/KB, and also the logitech extreme 3D pro flight stick i picked up yesterday.

I am assuming you can use your mouse and keyboard and then when it is time to fly you can use the controller. If so, I may be doing this for BF3 because flying helicopters and jets in the beta was a nightmare for me using KB&M

yeah that's how it works. to me the X360 controller is hands-down better than M/KB and a flight stick i tried out as well.

I very much look forward to playing these maps this Friday:

- Operation Firestorm
- Grand Bazaar
- Caspian Border
- Operation Metro

;)

Gotta remember to bring my Joystick.

Not sure if this was posted, I tried searching the thread. Apologies otherwise.

Troubles with joystick support & no voice chat ingame:

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/battlefield-3/1199753p1.html

GameSpy: The beta didn't support in-game VOIP; players had to form a party through battlelog to be able to chat just to their party. Will Battlefield 3 include in-game VOIP – be it squad or team based – at launch?

Lars: No, on PC this (battlelog) is what we're going to ship with. Then we're going to evaluate how we move forward with this. It's something we've heard from the community, it's something we understand. At the same time, building a game of this size, you can't win all of the battles. The convenience of going in with friends with your party VOIP channel and keep it even after the game, is definitely a strength. That's just the start – we can definitely evolve from there down the road.

Funny tidbit

If we kept everything on console level for those PC players, then they would rightfully strangle us! I do think we have managed to push the boundaries of the consoles to a level where I feel we've passed the competition. That's all you can ask out of the team at this point.

It's really gold for us to get this insight from the community. Yes, they're loud sometimes, and very passionate about it, but I'd rather have them loud and passionate than not talking to us at all. So I see that as a sign of investment.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with it...but it does have it's drawbacks. That's what keeps it balanced. I seem to be the unlucky type that will die as I'm trying to go prone or instantly get headshot when I do. That or the grass will block any vision I had of my target, or someone else will finish me off as I look for cover after the fight.

Also, I can't imagine flying a chopper with anything but a kb/m.

Up to 12 million simultaneously? Amazing. I would like to see the link if possible.
All DICE needs is 30% of them or more to buy day one, and a large percentage of the others to come around over the following months.
7M+ copies this time next year is success in my book.

Yes, he broke the oh so terrible news of Battlerecorder.

Depending on how you interpret this, there were either 2 million simultaneous participants in the BC2 beta, or only 2 million period. I suppose either figure seems reasonable, but the former makes more sense to me. Here's a quote from the website:

"GM Karl Magnus Troedsson said on Battleblog, "The biggest reason for running the Open Beta is to stress test our servers and back end,” he said. “Already, we are seeing six times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The fact that Battlefield 3 is clearly our biggest game launch ever by a magnitude of six makes it doubly important to test everything."
