Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Thread

Anyone here have 2x 5870 1GB running this game? It seems like its super choppy even at 45+ FPS.. is this what "microstuttering" is supposed to be? I was running everything on ultra at 50-60 fps and it felt worse than me running it at 37fps with a single card.

Thats microstuttering for you. One of the reason why going CF will increase benchmark scores but does little for actual perceived performance. Everyone that says they don't have the problem are usually running games that performs fast enough that a single card can provide smooth gameplay. So they go around saying MS is nonsense. But in reality if you dont feel MS you won't have problem running with a single card either.

microstutter is real but its hard for many people to even perceive it. what he is describing sounds like stutter for another reason if it is that noticeable and game breaking. and saying that every game that does not have any noticeable stutter would play fine on a single gpu with the same settings is a bit silly.

Yes, most of you have lovely i7 processors.

Can anyone comment how a Q6600 and a 260 GTX performs at 1680 x 1050, low detail.

Probably like horseshit because it is outdated.

I have a PhenomII 720 with the 4th core unlocked along with a 4850 and the fps dips pretty low most of the time. Running at 1920x1080, Everything low but texture and terrain which are at medium, no AA, 8x AF, disabled hbao. I did bump my volts up to 1.45 and raised my clocks back up to 3.4 then upped my 4850 by about 100mhz. Actually made a noticeable difference but still not anywhere desirable nor playable for my standards. Looking into getting a used 6870, gtx 560ti, or 6950 and see how that treats me, don't really wanna dump much money into an aging system.

Go with a 6950 or 560 TI...my 6870 would struggle with some of the newer games and ultra settings @ 1920 x 1080. Better safe than sorry.

guys what can I except from my rig. I currently have no video card. Thinking of going out and buying a 560 Ti today.

All of these CF issues make me sad. Just bought a second reference 6950 2gb for this game... Considering selling them and grabbing a single 580 3gb or something for 5670x1080 eyefinity. Suggestions?

I think that is about the only single card solution. The 6990 might work. A friend of mine has one with a 2600K. have not spoken to him about his performance yet though.

Sure champ, whatever you say. With SLI disabled my single 260 was completely unplayable @ 1920x1200 Medium, but with SLI enabled its butter smooth on High.

Just wait for the final game and non-beta drivers at least, jesus. I fully expect crossfire 6950 to handily beat a single 580.

launched it last night for the first time and had great experience /w the default graphic settings (High). Played Operation Metro and it was very smooth game play for the entire hour I played. I noticed some of the common bugs people are complaining about (environment flash and prone sinking), but overall i was impressed and no issues /w my rig and have no intentions to upgrade a thing.

Fraps gave me 45 - 60 and avg was 55

Okay I have tested two computers with the ff settings:
Ultra settings
0xAA
1680x1050

1st PC
Q9550 @ 3.8
5870
45 - 70 FPS

2nd PC
2500K @ 3.3
6950
45 - 70 FPS

Since the 5870 = 6950 performance more or less, and the results show that they also have the same average FPS, then I can safely say that the GPU is the most important hardware for BF3 as long as you have a good quad core CPU.

Anyone using a 4870?

My 4890 runs it on all low settings just fine.

As for the CPU debate, my Phenom 550BE OC to 4core/3.4hgz was only at 60% total usage while running the beta. Doubtful that the final version will be above 70% usage.

i have a q6600, gtx 260... and 1680x1050.

a good 50~ solid for nearly the entire map. the only part it really deviated much from 50 was near the end of the map.

i tried textures on ultra but it was a choppy fucking mess, high made it smooth as fuck again. i'm GPU bound for the most part it seems at those settings, though just barely. it's very playable.

I get 60-80fps on Metro with the rig below. This is at 1080p with all settings at medium. It looks great even at medium, I haven't even bothered turning anything up yet to test.

570s in sli
i7 960
10g of ram
5760x1080 res

Getting an average of 45 fps with all settings on high and no aa.
Getting in the low 30s to high 20s when turned up to ultra

Its one of the best looking surround games i have played yet, very little stretch on the side monitors compared to most games

Which is why I say CF not multi gpu in general. I have tried SLI and for some reasons it just works alot better than CF.

I've tried chocolate and vanilla ice cream and for some reason, vanilla tastes a lot better than chocolate.

I asked in the main bf3 thread, but no answer yet... Thought it'd be more reasonable here:

So at 2560x1600 the ammo count and map get cutoff...

Using screen adjust, I made it the smallest width and height i could and it all shows up, but I'm not sure if it's proper.
Does anyone know how to use the screen adjust ingame properly? How much do we need to resize it... What about aspect ratios and stuff? Not sure if using smallest width and height is how it should be...

I initially thought you were supposed to expand it to fit the screen, but that made it worse and cut off a lot more of the screen

I see what you did there.

Anyway, I'm having absolutely no issues with CF, and I'm not using the beta drivers, still on 11.8. I seem to be getting ~100 fps with everything set to Ultra @ 1920x1080. Of course, I'm not entirely sure if the settings are correct, as the game set them automatically, but I haven't been able to get into another game to test it.

I can't get full screen working. Alt-tab does nothing. I can't fix my fucking mouse pre-sets to what I usually use. Fuck this beta... die die die die. Is there an offline mode so I can work on my pre-sets without being fragged sitting at spawn? UN-fucking-believable.

This has gotta be using cpu pretty well as the rig in my sig runs this really well at ultra altho admittedly at 1680x1050. I don't have FRAPS or anything but didn't notice slowdown at all. Was really expecting the GTS450 to really limit me on this game so am quite surprised!! Was gonna jump on a 6950 but I might just plumb for a 6870 now......decisions!!

so, how would a 4850 512mb card do on an i5..lol , been holding out for a new card since i built my new rig,

is BC3 as CPU intensive as BC2 is?

Agree. The design decisions are seriously retarded. And this is supposed to be a PC first game? The graphics are underwhelming as well given how poorly it performs.

Question for all the 570 SLI owners... hows the VRAM hitting the limit working for you maxed in Ultra? Any hiccups associated with it?

Was about to buy a pair of 570's but then people are saying that BF3 is maxing out their VRAM up to 1.4 so wanted to see if it was still a wise choice over buying only 1 580 3gb.

Just did a quick bench during some random gameplay (all in the first section) with PlayClaw

How are you getting to this screen?? I see no options to adjust anything....470 sli runs like crap. Second GPU usage is always low and sometimes I dip as low as 8 fps.. anyone have any suggestions?

I have old Q8200 with gtx 260.

I turned all setting to max, no AA, at 1920*1080. I have about 7 fps at open terrain. around 20fps indoor.

Turned everything down to low, at 1920*1080 about 20 ~ 75 fps. however there is serious input lag, about 2 SECONDS, even fps tells me it should be smooth.

Turned res to 1280*1024, everything low: around 45fps, very playable, game still look gorgeous.

I probably would buy the PS3 version.

On high with my sig setup, I averaged high 20's fps outside. Disappointed to say the least. I suppose that upgrade is inevitable.

Turned every setting on low and reso to 16 x 10 just to average over 45 fps outside.

I think it might be your cpu. I am running the same gpu overclocked 1680x1050 all settings high except MSAA off + ssao and post AA medium. Averaging 70fps outside.

I concur. Buddy is running 2x 260's with an i7 920 @ 1920x1200 smooth as butter.

Great, thanks for sharing guys. Quick questions:
1. Is there noticeable difference between High vs Ultra?

Everyone here saying they're on ultra is really on high.

DICE promises an "Ultra" graphics mode for the final version that is currently not implemented in the Beta.

http://csnation.net/content.php?556-Ultra-Visuals-Not-Implemented-in-Battlefield-3-Beta

Basically, you can turn your settings to Ultra, but it doesn't change anything. You'll still be on High. You can look for more information in the official forums. Kinda explains why I was getting around the same frames as I was getting on high quality since I was expecting a hit when tessellation would kick in but it looks like I'll have to wait for the final release version.

Played for 4 hours; ranked 8;

Q9550, 3.4, w/ a HD 5870.............plays fine for me. Actually, the cpu load was less than that for BC2 (varied on 4 cores between 55 - 85%). The GPU load was higher (often 99%), but I suspect very bad drivers right now (using 10.9?); I've seen this before w/ the 5870 and amd drivers....having the % useage pegged, that is.........later drivers fixed it. Happy that I can play BF3, if I choose to buy it.

Yep my exact experience and conclusion too; great that my old 9550 and 5870 are still good to go.....................hurray.

By the by, ram useage during gaming was about 4.2 - 4.4 GB.z

you must have a ton of other stuff open because the game does not use anywhere near half that much ram. min to play is 2gb and 4gb is recommended.

XPS M1730 notebook
T9500 C2D 2.6GHz dual core
3 GB RAM
8800M GTX w/1GB

Verdict: Playable! On low, sure, but playable! I was really only seeing lag when the rest of the server was seeing it. There was one time when I turned around right in front of a flame; that made it chug a little.

This means I can get along until I can get the money to build a new home system. Huzzah!
