Battlefield 2042

The lack of campaign should be celebrated. The campaigns for BF3 and BF4 were actually good, IMO, however most people played it once - if that - and then only multiplayer thereafter.

Having a single player campaign was good for introducing players to the game mechanics without getting raped in multiplayer.

Whereas the only reason I picked up BF1 and BFV were for the campaign. *shrug* But to be fair this was way after launch at a heavy discount.
Yeah, the people that spent $5 for a month of Origin Gamepass to passively consume the campaigns aren't really the target demographic, nor is there any ROI in that for a publisher. Dollars and cents reality.

Battlefield was always about MP. And I think anyone intimidated by MP is missing out. I used to be one of those people, I perceived MP as this very high wall that only super skilled players could get over. But as it turned out, MP is mostly like learning to ride a bike. You get your ass handed at first, but then find a small success here or there, and it snowballs. Incredible fun.

Will plan my vacation around this game in October I think pretty far away I know.

I've noticed a few things about the possible story...

I was listening to the random radio chatter on the countdown stream, and heard a few things that seem to indicate a 3rd faction like "US and Russian forces have been accused of escalating the conflict"... almost like they are getting involved in someone else's war.

There was another quote that mentioned "who are you going to fight for when there are no countries left?" or something like that.

Then I noticed something else in the trailer itself. I saw obvious US and Russian vehicles and weapons... but a new logo on the side of some of the troops and vehicles that looks like a giant capital "N".

Then we get a giant missile launch that everyone is trying to shoot down, and a giant tornado inside a city that pops up out of nowhere (which rarely happens IRL).

Anyone else getting GI JOE weather dominator vibes? LMAO. Then the story for BF2142 was there was a freak rapidly onset ice-age in the middle of global warming so it kinda fits.

Maybe some tie-ins to the Phantom program from BF4 and BF1?

All just fun random speculation. I could be completely wrong too.
It looks like I was right. JackFrags video says the new faction is called "No-Pats" short for "Non Patriated". It's similar to the word "Ex-pat" or "Ex-patriate" which is an emigrant or exile from a country. I'm guessing "No-Pats" are a bit of a mercenary faction with no country to call their own.

Next question - weapon mods, perks, class unlocks, etc.

Do you all want BF3 and BF4 style, with a plethora of attachments, and weapon mods?

Or a simplified style like BF5?

BF3 style but I'm not sure if I like being able to change attachments on the ground. I mean its cool but not sure if its great for the gameplay.

Here's the backstory:

https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042/the-world-of-battlefield-2042/how-we-got-here

The only "huh?" is in the final paragraph: the idea of "A food and fuel shortage ignites a shadow war between the US and Russia. To maintain plausible deniability, both sides field No-Pat Task Forces as proxies in escalating conflicts over resources – promising the refugees a piece of what's left."

Plausible deniability? Bitch please. Why would any country care about appearances anymore in a global shitstorm of failed states fighting over resources. Hell, the U.S. and Russia don't care about plausible deniability right now. Also, why am I mindlessly nitpicking a WGAF issue over a fictional story in a videogame? **self-administers flyswatter to the face**

WELCOME TO

2042

As the world stands on the brink of war, a new kind of stateless soldier emerges from the greatest crisis in human history. How did we get here?

A DECADE OF CHAOS

2031.
Ten years is all it took to bring the world to the brink. Rising sea levels, collapsing economies, broken alliances, and the headlines keep rolling in...

October 9th, 2033.
“Hurricane Zeta. The world's first category 6 storm.”
Jan 11th, 2034.
“Global food, fuel shortages spark Second Great Depression.”
August 8th, 2035.
"European Union officially disbands following Germany’s collapse.”

THE RISE OF THE NO-PATS

Left behind, the displaced band together into ragtag fleets in search of safe harbor. They are families, farmers, doctors, engineers, and soldiers... the once privileged and the impoverished with backgrounds that are worlds apart, forced together, determined to survive.

The media calls them the Non-Patriated. They call themselves… No-Pats.

THE NEW NORMAL

2037.
Humanity adapts to the new normal. Revolutions in energy, desert irrigation, hydraulic levees, and sea walls save coastal cities, reclaim farmland, and rebuild supply chains. Hope of finding stability leads to some nations re-opening their borders.

However, with no way to repatriate 1.2 billion people, No-Pats become a permanent fixture in all economic, military, and social policy making. Many No-Pats are still distrustful of the governments that exiled them and refuse calls to reassimilate. No-Pat leaders emerge, inspiring a new identity unbound to former nationality, drawing a line in the sand between the Old World and The New Normal. #WeAreNoPats becomes a rallying cry.

Amidst the world rebuilding, sparks of friction erupt between the US and Russia, as the last two superpowers both vie for control of this fast-changing world.

THE BLACKOUT OF 2040

2040.
A sudden space debris storm creates a “Kessler Effect” causing 70%+ of all orbiting satellites to malfunction and crash to Earth. The cause is unknown.

The subsequent blackout causes mass devastation. Planes crash. Communication grids collapse. Already jammed global supply chains come to a stand-still. Prices of oil, grain, coal skyrocket exponentially. Unsubstantiated claims report over 100,000 lives are lost.

A world on the brink, goes over the edge. No internet. No navigation. No surveillance. No storm forecasts.

Geopolitical distrust surges overnight. No one can spy on each other, so no one can trust each other. Both Russia and the US claim the other is responsible for the Blackout, while some suspect No-Pats were behind it and accuse them of trying to sow anarchy.

Former military and combat trained Specialists amongst the No-Pats rise up into armed Task Forces to defend themselves as tensions rise.

THE BRINK OF WAR

A food and fuel shortage ignites a shadow war between the US and Russia. To maintain plausible deniability, both sides field No-Pat Task Forces as proxies in escalating conflicts over resources – promising the refugees a piece of what's left.

2042.
Open war is imminent. No-Pats have no choice but to choose sides, fighting not for a flag, but for their future.

Their War is Your Story.

THE BRINK OF WAR

A food and fuel shortage ignites a shadow war between the US and Russia. To maintain plausible deniability, both sides field No-Pat Task Forces as proxies in escalating conflicts over resources – promising the refugees a piece of what's left.

Battlefield classes are now specialists. There are four base classes and each specialist has two unique perks to diversify squad composition. Outside of the perks every specialist will be able to fully customize their loadout. The first four specialists were revealed today.

https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-2042/game-overview/specialists
I like this, take some stuff from siege lol. I'm sure there will be ones you have to buy which could be not good if they release a specialist that is OP.

Let's hope EA learned already with their P2W boxes crisis during Battlefront 2 days.

I don't expect free dlcs, but that type of crap will cripple the reputation.

Lot of things EA has to do right this time around in order to save any face they have left.

So far everything about this game seems a return-to-form and love-letter-to-fans. It wouldn't make any sense to sabotage that with any P2W elements, and certainly not after the lessons learned from some of the previous EA games. But I expect to see fears and FUD about "P2W" thrown around anyway, mostly out of confusion over how the Specialist system actually works. Also, the most powerful or noteworthy Specialist perks will be on the free track I have no doubt.

From what I understand so far, the Specialists are basically the class perks which are already present in BFV, but with more variety and not restricted to certain classes.

Definitely sounds more interesting than had they just re-issued 4 classes with unlock trees. So instead of "I want to get this certain gun, so I'll grind Assault class until I get that gun", now there's an extra layer of "but I also want this cool little tool or ability that this certain Specialist has".

All the DLC for BFV was free. "Surprise mechanics" is still up in the air.

Yeah, but I'd say they will have more and more specialists that are part of the battle pass and real money as time goes on. just like how operators are in rainbow six siege.

looks like we're getting less maps

bf1: 9
bf5: 8
bf2042: 7
It's been a slow downward trend.

Maps at launch (excluding DLC and patch content)
BF1942: 19
BF:Vietnam: 14
BF2: 14
BF2142: 10
BF:BC2: 9
BF3: 9
BF4: 10
Battlefield Hardline: 9
BF1: 9
BF5: 8
BF2042: 7

I'm not too sure on 1942 and Vietnam. That was 20 years ago LOL.

Looks like a 2040 model Ripsaw:

I remember those guys had that reality show Howe and Howe Tech on discovery channel about 10 years ago. I know they mostly survive on civilian purchases, but the US military has been toying with one of their tanks for years as a drone platform. I don't think they've gotten any major purchases yet. Most notable use of their tank yet has been as a one of the Cobra HISS tanks in the GI Joe movies and in the latest Mad Max movie.

I suspect there is less maps due to the size of the gameplay. 128 players must make it more difficult to design I reckon. That being said, BF3 had the best maps!
The first time loading into Caspian Border during the first beta - stuff blowing up all around, jets flying by overhead, a real WTF moment. And always hoped they would do a Kharg Island remaster in BF4, stretched out like 50% larger and with attack boats!

If DICE delivers on the "biggest maps ever" promise of BF 2042, I demand similar moments of awe!

If the maps are good and aren't a bug ridden, game crashing mess like levolution was at launch for BF4 maps, I will forgive them for that. However, I will still be sad if they decide to cut DLC short like they did with BFV.

As funny as that huge fuckin tornado was, I have strong suspicion it will be game crashing for a few months just like the skyscraper collapse in BF4's seige of shanghai.

I'm predicating Hourglass (Conquest) and Discarded (CQB) to be fan favorites.
Orbital, Kaleidoscope and Breakaway to be amazing based on the new modes.

The others, Manifest and Renewal, wait and see.

If this game brings back the 5 cap titan mode I will be 1000% buying this game lol. Some of my fondest fps memories are from bf2142 and the titan mode.
The "vertical" scale in the game is immense. From the missile, mountains, tornados and skyscrapers, everything says......Titan.

Looks like the classes were dropped in favor of "specialists". Which is just their take on the hero shooter mania, which I hate. Rather than being nameless soldiers like past games they've gone the TF2, R6 Siege and Call of Duty route. Not a fan of it and I don't want the game to have constantly shove characters and cringe backstories in my face. Especially dumb since there is no campaign.

Hopefully they just threw the term "specialist" out in an attempt to appease the younger gamer crowd/hero shooter crowd, but don't do anything with it.

Looks like it. Going to assume it is a hummer/small MRAP stand in on snow maps for quick transport.

I want a urban middle east map like bf2's mashtuur city or strike at karkand. as big as these maps might be it could be like maps within a map. I saw this graphic in level cap's video. so hour glass might be 4 times the size of hamada.

I'm not hating the art style so far in this preorder bonus stuff.

So far they've stated any paid content on top of base game and free battle pass will be cosmetic.

Regarding a lack of single player. Co-op is always an option to fill that need. I keep my ideas on these things to myself in case the very unlikely happens and I'm involved in game development. But it can be done in a good way so people don't miss what single player offered.

The idea is future wars will be fought using private militaries. Which means they don't have defined classes, but they are people who specialize in something.
Like cilivains that have their own arsenal, we won't have a class load-out but we would have what ever we can carry.

These private militaries may form one large military that goes by the name "N" in the trailer. US and Russia were manipulated into conflict by N.
US and Russia are fractured and the people that fight are trying to restore things, without support from a central command. So you get specialist, instead of military classes.

Top guy looks ridiculous but the others look okay. As long as they keep it authentic looking that is fine. But knowing how other games like Call of Duty do things, it won't be long before we see alien heads and lizard men running around. Personally I'd rather pay for a BF3/4 style premium if it mean skipping the monetized cosmetics.

For me BF3 and BF4 all the way. The little I tried BFV and BF1 I hated the unlock system for one big reason. BF3 and BF4 had me using all the weapons just to unlock all the customization and attachments. I would play with a weapon until the next unlock and then switch. Buying the guns never interested me since once I found one I like I don't bother with the rest.

I still think DICE would make a killing with a GI JOE F2P battle royale. GI JOE would allow the crazy costumes that would totally fit along with all their crazy vehicles. You know you want to run around in a Wolf or a Hydrofoil
