My current rig doesn't cut the mustard, coming from a 2.6 P4, 768 RDRAM, and a 9600XT. Runs horribly. Budget is $1k, minus the cost of BF2, so say $950. I can use my POS case for a little while longer. Minor overclocks.

Antec TP2 550 - $89
Good PSU, good price. Should run SLI no?

ASUS A8N-SLI - $139
ASUS reliability, best-price SLI board that has some quality to it.

A64 3200+ - $190
10x multi should help with overclocking. Should hit 3500+ speeds at least, right?

XFX 6800GT - $299 AR
Not a big fan of XFX, but the price is too much to resist.

Corsair XMS DDR-400 - $116
$30 more gets me XMS over ValueRAM.

Hitachi SATA II, 80GB, 3.0Gbs - $60
80GB is more than enough for me.

Battlefield 2 - $47
.nuff said.

Total - $989.90 - $50 Rebate = $939.90

Comments? I might get an XP-90 with the rebate money.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Thats fine, any brand is ok, OCing varies.

Get the XMS.

Thats fine.

Thats perfect.

TWINX1024-3200C2PT

I don't think they use TCCD for this series ^ C2PT.

How high FSB can I hit with just 2x1GB Value RAM? And I thought 1GB modules had high latencies, don't AMD procs like low latencies?

EDIT - Seems I have $60 left of my $1000. I can get:

1GB RAM, XP-90 & Panaflo
or
2GB RAM, Stock HSF (for now)

Which one (both Value RAMs)?

Have a look at the memory forum to get a better idea, and no as far as i know it was only the XPs that sufferd badly, the A64s i think are badly affected by timings

I don't recommend that PSU because of the poor fan choice and mounting. Get rid of the SLI motherboard. It is just a waste of money. Get an X800XL as you an get it for $250 from monarch Computers and they both perform about the same. Forget about XMS. Just get some cheap Value RAM and get 2GB of it. 2x1GB would be best.

We use Antec TruePowers at work, in very rough environments. They do fine.

In case you didn't notice, I'm trying to do the add-one-later SLI upgrade path. Besides, I want HDR.

Everyone has said that, but no one will tell me how good Value RAM overclocks compared to XMS.

EDIT - Google seems to indicate that Value RAM can run at 240FSB.

There are still much better choices.

That makes no sense at all. When the time comes to add another 6800GT you would be better off selling it and buying a new single card. SLI is just a waste of money. The only time it makes any sense is if you are planning on running 2x 7800GTX's in SLI.

It doesn't matter. Just run a divider.

Well the overclock will vary using XMS or using value ram, but the only real difference will be in the latency.

I was able to get my MSI and now a 3200+ (shrinking my main rig to a Micro ATX/Shuttle format) to 2.6 using Value ram using the divider (166/200) pushing the value ram to 216 (250x10). Timings are higher than I would like (2.5-3-3-8), but the difference was just 300 points in my 3DMark03 score and a measly 110 points in 3DMark05 compared to the same setup with my Pro Series 4000XL running 2-2-3-6. So for BF2 I don't think it will be much of a difference.

Having 2GB of RAM in BF2 would make more sense then having 1GB of lowlatency RAM...

Does BF2 really need more than 1 gig? Mine doesnt go anywhere near using 1 gig of my ram. Would it use more if I used higher graphic settings? I don't have a good enough rig to run it on high.

Im using a 2x512mb pair of the Corsair XMS TwinX PC3200 that I got 2 years ago and they are doing just fine in BF2. My CPU and Video Card are the problem.

I say 2gb... just get what teh other guy said, two cheap 1gb sticks... they'll be 2.5cas, but still work having the extra ram by far.

Final specs:

Antec TP2 550
A8N-SLI (vanilla)
A64 3200+
2GB Corsair Value Select
XFX 6800GT
80GB Hitachi SATA II

I may pick up a Lian-Li PC65B later (after I sell off my current rig). How will this system run BF2? As in, what quality/resolution/AA/AF can I expect to run it at?

PS - For future proofing, I plan to put in an X2 and another 6800GT later (or maybe a single 7800GTX). The price difference between a SLI and non-SLI board is $20, so I figure the price difference is enough to warrant the extra features and SLI possibility (even if I never use it).

I also agree on more ram. I was running 1gig in my main rig, and just slapped another 512 in it because BF2 was hogging it all. At one point when BF2 started stuttering really bad, I opened the Windows task manager only to find out that I had ~10 megs of ram free. When in Windows I normally have around 800MB free....

BF2 = ram-hog but fun!

Looks good. I'd say on a scale of 8x6 low settings to 16x12 uber settings 8x AA 16x AF you'll be in about the middle.

what monitor do you have?

Funny, runs butter-smooth on my 512MB laptop with a 5400RPM hdd @ 1920x1200
