Amazing how many Server 2003/XPx64 haters there are out there. Have any of you used it for any length of time?
I hear 'oh noes, it is old' - but the benchmarking I did showed the old dog still runs stable, if not faster. To me, this is what matters most.
I hear 'drivers, lol' - but most of the premium boards out there have drivers as well as the major video card players. Sure, there might be some odd ball thing out there, but... the 99% of drivers you need are there. (I'll also make sure the hardware supports Linux as well, which can be a bit more work at times) When I bought hardware, I had 100% driver support.
I hear 'old IE noob, you are owned' - I only wish I could live in a world where IE6 could just fracking die. Why anyone would use IE for anything other than Windows Update is beyond me.
I hear 'old OS noob, you are owned' - Unlike the retarded 32-bit version, Server 2003/XP64 is quite solid and fairly easy to lock down, as far as any Windows based OS goes. I still see 10 to 1 server 2003 vs 2008 server at customer sites. The same tricks work as a workstation. As long as it gets patched, it is still a viable option.
Performance for the older OS is still solid. It is older but also chews up fewer resources. If you run virtual machines all day and need to also be in a Windows environment, it is rock solid. I've found that XP64 behaves better with troublesome DRM / older games better than the Win7 compatibility mode. YMMV.
Missing out on newer cuts of DirectX is a bit of an unfortunate loss.
