AW3418DW Freesync alternative?

I've been planning to upgrade to the AW3418DW (from a standard 24" 1080 screen) for a while now as I gather the funds for it. But now that Nvidia is supporting Freesync (kind of) are there any viable alternatives that would give me greater freedom in GPU upgrades (currently on a 1060) in the future and/or let me avoid the added cost of G-Sync while still getting the advantages of it?

LG 34GK950F-B seems to fit the bill but it's several hundred dollars more (Alienware monitor has been in the $700-800 range)

MSI MAG341CQ hits almost everything and is cheaper. But only 2 instead of a 3 year warranty. Plus the 100 vs 120hz and VA instead of IPS. I can handle the first, but I'm not even sure whether VA or IPS would be better for for gaming.

Asus XG35VQ seems like an equivalent but isn't any cheaper and I'm now having to deal with Asus' notorious customer support if anything goes wrong.

Any obvious alternatives I'm missing? I'm leaning toward just sticking with the AW3418DW and just dealing with being being locked into Nvidia cards due to the lack of good alternatives I've found.

You pretty much said it all. I'd stick with the AW3418DW.

Yeah when they announced Freesync support I was expecting a whole new world of options. But as I went through the list nothing jumped out at me as an obvious better buy. I have no problem with upgrading to another Nvidia card in the future I'd just like the option of being able to go for whichever has better price/performance regardless of brand instead of being locked in due to Gsync.

$725 today for that Alienware.

I own it, and really like it

I’ve also had my hands on that $400 MSI 34” ultrawide.

My comparison of the two is linked here.

One of the things I was considering is whether I should sell the Alienware and keep the MSI and put $200-300 back in my pocket on the switch. What I determined subjectively is the Alienware, at this stage in my life, and with my personal financial setting was worth keeping, but I’d have no major misgivings if I swapped out either. The Alienware stand is significantly better (the MSI doesn’t height adjust) and the Alienware has slightly better colors IMO. I’d say subjectively the MSI was 80-85% the monitor at 50% the cost.

Yeah I caved and got on that deal today. I'm replacing my wife's laptop in the next couple of months so that Dell gift card is effectively cash for me right now. Needless to say, I'm just a little bit excited when I'm coming from a basic 24"/1080 monitor I bought in 2011.
