Board is a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R and I'm running Vista64.
Had some recent problems with my Vista security and USB HOTAS controllers that was described as a jmicron bug. I down loaded and installed the latest jmicron drivers and took my harddrives off the Gigabyte provided raid sockets. Also disabled them in bios.
Still had problems.
So...I formatted and reinstalled Vista hoping to get rid of the problem.
So far I've only installed the Realtec audio and Lan drivers from the chipset cd.
1) Have not installed the Sata and Raid drivers. (Windows installed their own according to Control Panel.)
2) Have not installed the Inf update utility "that inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality such as PCI-Express or USB interface"
Would appreciate any input concerning the addition of these two items as to functionality or if they would put me back where I was before.

Describe the problem you're having. You're not giving enough information.

Bad move, get the most recent ones from Gigabyte/Jmicron and Intel sites. Use whatever "update driver" procedure available in Vista.

Really really bad move, Install the inf chipset driver before doing item 1 or anything else.


I too need more info. Vista security issues would I think be a vista issue. Issue with USB joystick would be the game driver/interface with the OS or hardware or the joystick itself.

FYI the usb ports on the board are provide by the ICH chip (the southbridge) in your case ICH(9or ICH10 - I forget and the Intel inf file tells the OS how to interact properly with the ICH so get that installed, its not the cause of your issue and is mandatory for full proper operation of the board. Also the Jmicron chip has nothing to do with the USB ports as far as I can tell but I gueess its possbile the Jmicron driver is causing some issue with the intel driver /shrug.

Moving everthing to the Intel chip would at least take the Jmicron chip out of the picture and it can be disabled in the bios. Might be good for troubleshooting to disable it.

I would be looking in the event viewer for application or system error msgs created when the security or joystick issues happen. Clear out the old events so you can easily find new ones.

All three of CH Products' new sticks integrate with their other USB controllers via CH's proprietary Control Manager software.

No idea if OP's stick has such a control panel but if so bugs there whould be where I would be looking.

Other thoughts, Gigabytes have a history of not liking strange things plugged into the USB ports on boot. /shrug again.
 
I'm not sure why the Jmicron controller would have anything to do with USB. If anything, disabling it in bios should remove any conflict in Vista.
 
Gentlemen, thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.
The security problem was, that I was locked out of my drives by a message stating that the drive was "write protected" I made a post here at [H] but was not able to come up with a satisfactory solution except to disable the UAC. After much searching here I found threads discussing the jmicron bug. Some also indicated possible problems with usb.
Since I was also having a problem with my sim controllers, I connected the dots.
The software for the controllers worked fine using Windows XP. The mod at the software forum, advised that I was the only one experiencing problems with the CH control manager, using Vista. He did offer me a Beta version. No joy.
The fix for the jmicron bug at [H] was:
1. Download and install the latest jmicron drivers. This worked for some. Others suggested that if it didn't, Vista needed to be reinstalled. It didn't work for me. So, I reformatted and reinstalled Vista.
2. Disable the two "G" Sata connections in bios. So I removed the two hard drives connected there and reconnected to sata only connectors. (Don't need raid) Although two extra connectors might have come in handy down the road.

I'm not sure that I understand this. If the problem is with the Gigabyte board. at this point I'll be happy to trash it. If however you mean that I should not switch devices using different usb connections, I use only dedicated usb connections.
Reason the controllers are important to me is that they will allow me to play games again.
An industrial accident last year, took away a couple of fingers on my left hand so, shooters are a bitch. :D.

This was a desperate attempt on my part to remember anything that might be the cause of your issue. For some time and occansionally still, people have trouble with things plugged into the USB ports of Gigabyte boards. The main symptom is the board will not overclock and resets the bios or does the "constant reboot cycle" thing.

This issue is becoming rare and I do not think you are affected as your issue would be worse than it is.


Really glad you got it working. Frankly it was just general advice as I know nothing about that device and even less about vista.

I really appreciate that you took the time out to help me. Frankly I was pretty much stumbling around in the dark. I followed your instructions and everything seems to be running ok.
Frankly, I bought the Gigabyte board because of the extra USB connectors. Didn't have a clue that they might be problematic.
