ATI HD 2900XT count down

Quake 4 performance for the HD out performs the GTS 320/640 when 4xAA or better is used.

There are some 8.37 driver issues with games like Lost Coast and BF2142 as it performs worst then the 1950xtx when AA is turned on. It appears he didn't have enough time to test with 8.38 drivers. When 16xAF was used in Lost Coast it did beat the GTS 320/640

Please read the review here for more information about other games, etc.

MORE SCREENSHOTS pls. things dont look that bad, esp at the extreme high quality levels.

OUCH! Reading through it now after having downloaded from the link I just posted:

Idle, you can see core at around 54C while loaded it goes to 71C without any overclocking. And this is one setup lying naked, imagine it in a case! Definitely one of the hottest cards around. The temperature-controlled fan on the card has little time in slow-spin operation, spinning up not long from start of operation, and perpetually all the time when 3D is ran. Not too much of a worry since it's not loud, but the noise is definitely audible.

3D Mark 06 SM3.0 Test "Canyon Flight" was ran to record the power consumption. The whole setup was the same except for Video Cards. Setup Specs on the next page.

PowerColor HD X2900XT Idle: 245 watts Load: 365 watts
ASUS EN8800GTS 640MB 513/792MHz Idle: 240 watts Load: 300 watts

Again, like what we've seen in our Lost coast tests, when Anti-Aliasing was turned on, the X2900XT faced performance issues, due to current driver implementation for sure as you can see it losing out to even the X1950XTX.

At normal view screen size you can already tell the difference. Look at the gun, that's closest to your character, you can see it starkly sharper on the 8800 compared to the 2900. Notice especially the words and buttons on the gun. Words are sharper and so are the finer details on the buttons on the card below. Even the dirt track further away from the character looks sharper rendered on the 8800.

(PICTURES HERE WITH NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE)

I would post more examples, but it continues on like this basically...

How long till we see better drivers do you think?
He already said that he didn't have time to re-do his review with the current 8.38 driver. He clearly stated he got them 3 days before the NDA was lifted. So we are looking at 8.39 or whatever they decide to call them. The review was completed with 8.37. Most of us who buy the video card this week will more then likely see 8.36.

^^Spamming the forums? I read that in another thread already. Besides, the problems that you conveniently left out was driver issues.

This is a hot topic people want to read about, I'm trying to help out by letting as many people as possible who are interested catch that link.

I didn't "conveniently" leave anything out.

from GoldenTiger's quote said:

I was giving a general overview of the review, not a comprehensive run-down. If someone wants that, they can easily go download it from rapidshare (the actual review) :).

The quote itself proves otherwise :). If you want someone to get the whole picture you let them read the review for them selves, not take snippets from the review and post it as gospel. For the entire review.

That's a complete contradiction based on what your quoted. Just let them see it for themselves

It looks to be overall faster than an 8800 GTS, but a lot more power and heat, which is what has been going around.

I hope AMD makes a better showing with Barcelona. And couple of more years with parts like this, and it could be the end. I hope not, I don't want to see just nVidia and Intel run away with everything, but AMD/ATI has GOT to pick up the pace!

Looks like it only uses 17 watts more then the GTX at load. I was expecting more
I think we all were, but it doesn't seem like the extra juice (65 watts over the GTS 640) is actually going anywhere. The XT trades blows with the GTS 640, faring tremendously well in CoH and Lost Coast, but not really making the grade in the other tests. All the while still pulling 65 watts beyond the GTS 640, and doing so with 128MB less VRAM. Quake 4 performance at 8XAA is quite excellent, of course, so it seems like the bandwidth is getting put to use. These upper levels of AA seems to be where the card is intended to shine.

The XT doesn't seem to be an abysmal performer, not by any stretch, but the efficiency of the architecture seems to be disgustingly poor.

^^ What I read from that is driver problems :)
Give it time, I hear that new cats release sometime during the week of the 25 if not sooner. Lets hope to see some serious improvements.
And from the look of things there is more performance left in it.

VR Zone says the drivers are very raw. It will improve by leaps and bounds in the next month.
I'm dying to see Crysis benchmarks. Quake 4 X8 AA is boring..:p

Glitches and issues aside, I can't imagine how VR-Zone could assert that the second set of drivers they received are "raw" and that there's a tremendous amount of performance still left in the card. Once Beyond3D puts out their review, with their deep evaluation of the raw performance of the architecture, we might have a firmer answer as to what R600 is capable of and where the drivers are falling short.

Right now, 8.37 could be the peak (which I highly doubt) or the trough. We don't know enough to say either way.

That's quite possibly the worst written review I've ever read, but I noticed they mentioned the fan is loud. If it's anything like the X1900XT fan, fuck ATI.

First ive heard of the fan being loud, gibbo at ocuk stated the fan on his sample wasn't audiable.

3dmark is a game now. Shit my version must be defective its the same levels and enemies everytime, plus it wont respond to my keyboard and mouse :(

The 8800 cards do show to have very slightly better AF right now. As we've seen in the past this can easily change with better drivers.
But the 2900 card has better AA.

There is no Crysis benchmark.

It seems like it needs driver work. It should have much better memory bandwidth than it's getting.

I wish for them. I doubt we'll get any real crysis benchmarks for months. I didn't mean I literally expect some to turn up this week. LOL
