ATI Catalyst 5.7

Actually you will find that we have improved performance for 64 and 128MB cards for many different games. ... Imagine if the notes read:

Guild Wars is now faster
Lego Star wars is alot faster,
Sims2 is a bit faster.

you know what I mean?

(truncated quote)

It's true, the 5.7s are very handy for MMOGs, in situations where large numbers of players tend to congregate and texture memory is usually overwhelmed, leading to a bit of thrashing of the memory (experienced as stuttering which untechnical players scream 'lag' at), it's much reduced.

I noticed ATI recommends WinXP-SP2 be installed for the 5.7 drivers. How big of a deal is it if I only have SP1a?

I don't think it will have a large effect. Manufacturers always mention how their products work better with a certain OS.

Just wondering though, what's stopping you from upgrading to SP2?

1. Had a lot of drivers and software incompatibilities when it first was released.

2. I've heard these problems are a lot less with a clean install and not an upgrade. I would be upgrading, but my system is working fine just the way it is.

Yes, I'm one of the paranoid crowd that hasn't upgraded yet. I guess I'm waiting to see what SP2a or 2b are like. :D

On CS:S stress test I got 10 fewer FPS with 5.7 than I did with 5.6. I was getting ~150fps, now I'm getting only ~140. :(

Has anyone had an issue where if they have the ATI Tool installed and running at startup that it can cause you to get a black screen when you first power up your machine yet your monitor VGA signal indicator says you are receiving signal?

It doesn't happen all the time with mine....it has happened 2x for me.

2 things:

1. Each strees test shows varying figures meaning you need to take an average
2. What's your hardware and specs? I get about 100fps 1680x1050 res and using x850xt :D

Not to be rude or anything but......is it THAT big of a deal?

Did you uninstall all previous driver versions with catalyst uninstaller? ....and then delete any remaining ATI references in the registry? Maybe those drivers don't like AMD/SP1a combination or maybe they don't like your Gigabyte MB. Anyone else have problems installing these drivers with SP1a?

Seems like almost everyone that has their hardware in their sig forgets to include what operating system they are running. What's up with that? :(

The release notes said there was a performance increase in 3D Mark 2005, I'm here to report that is pure bullshit as mine went down about 80 points. I really don't care about benchmarks but if they lied about that what can I expect in games?

You do realize that (as mentioned numerous times in this thread) these optimizations and improvement claims are primarily for cards under 256 mb right?
