I fixed my problem! I won't bore you with the details I'll just say it involved system restore and extra thick bleach ;)
Now I'm off to appreciate any new performance gains.

When I see some independent benchmarking by users and hardware review sites showing those same gains with playable frame-rates in real games (as opposed to synthetic benchmarks) then I'll become a true believer.

I have such a twin? I have never heard of him or seen him in any forum ;)

For whatever it means I give you my word that we have never ever released a number that is not verified in our benchmark labs at least twice. I would never imagine releasing false numbers. I appreciate your skepticism and totally understand it. However you must realize that statements such as up to 60% performance improvements mean usually that under one system configuration, and one resolution, and one specific benchmark with specific settings, we can reproduce gains of like 58% the first run and 62% the second run. Something like that.

Okay, I did some benchmarking last night. Mostly Counterstrike Video Stress Test. I didn't notice much performance improvement at first. I usually get ~59 fps on the stress test with no AA/AF on my main rig. And this is what I got last night. But, when I turn on 2xAA and 4xAF I get 55fps, and with 4xAA and 8xAF I get 49 fps. These numbers are actually much better than they were before. I also notice the Stress Test looks better. Hard to describe but I get more detail on the textures and it seems better/smoother. Got to say I'm pretty happy with this release. I even fired up BF2 and played a few rounds of heavy helicopter battling and had smooth frames the entire time.

well played for about 2-3 hours on the 5.7s and didnt notice anything strange during bf

goin back to the game for some more "testing" lol
 
Yah, played for a while today.

Seemed like there was increased performance. I was able to fly around on Fushee Pass in a plane (64-player size) and had ~70s-80s FPS. THis is with 1280x960 textures on Med, dynamic shadows off, everything else on high, 4xAA 8xAF. Cant say for sure there was a definate increase, but I dont recall being able to fly on any map with that high of FPS on 5.6s
 
The release notes said there was a performance increase in 3D Mark 2005, I'm here to report that is pure bullshit as mine went down about 80 points. I really don't care about benchmarks but if they lied about that what can I expect in games?

yes, because I ran it without AF and that's what I was describing. It looks crisper even without the AF. It runs more like my friends 6600GT, before mine was kinda washed out compared to his. Like I said, it's hard to explain but pretty apparent when I ran the benchmark.

It looks like ATI has wokred out most of the bugs with this update. I was almost ready to make the switch to nVidia.

Important Note:
Anytime you install CCC over top of a pre-existing version you can expect a lot of trouble. I have had to wipe windows clean twice. Once because I was ignorant and twice because I was forgetful.
 
Had an issue installing drivers for my X700PRO. Got note of DLL file not found. The title of the window it appeared on said Thunk.exe.... any suggestions anyone? THe CCC installed just fine though. I would LOVE to play more with my x64 platform. I like it :D

I got that with the 5.6 installation one time, just ignore it (going by my experience) it doens't affect anything.
 
well, when I went into CCC there were no driver versions posted but it did recognize the card. I guess I should just try to do some testing risking it all!! lawl.
 
eh, I went ahead and installed it anyways.

No problems at all, used the ati un-install, turned off Ati tool, removed it from startup, rebooted, removed my Lan connection, told windows to shut up when it asked to connect to the net to get drivers for me, installed 5.7 drivers, rebooted, turned Ati tool back on and put it back in startup.

no fuss, no muss. gonna test 3 dmark 03 here in a minute. I dont use 05 becuase I dont want Media Player 10.
 
I stand corrected ..... it was an INF file that was not found. and I cannot run 3d applications. sucky.
 
Tried that... maybe beta 2.0 dotnet framework? I've heard shady stuff about it tho.
 
So...should I give these a try or skip them? I'm having crash probs in BF2...hopefully these will fix it...
 
Installed 5.7 - no problems here. Playing like a champ. I have a feeling this rig is gonna stay this way until I throw it out in the trash - next step will be a full new build with PCIe and M2 socket stuff.
 
drivers are working but CCC does not come up... wierd... could be an issue w/ dotnet 2.0 beta. will try different stuff. wish I did not have all this trouble. Games look and play beautiful... will post gains when I get them.
 
I don't know if anyone else ran into this but when I uninstalled my drivers, using the uninstall utility, I had to have Windows restarted via Microsoft. I don't know if it is just my system or not but this is the third time this has happened after a driver change(video).
 
all working well at this point and I do not see any performance gaines. HL2 gave me 2-4 FPS at spots but loading times seem to be much faster. Excited about using x64 for games. negligable gains in 3dm05. nothing fantastic or worth mentioning.
 
That link to the new catalyst uninstaller extracts a file dated November 2004 and 104KB, whereas if you DL it from the ATI site (5.7 drivers page) it gives you an exe file that is 301KB. I'm confused, which one is the newest? I was under the impression that the new catalyst uninstaller was just released at the same time as these 5.7 drivers. :confused:
 
If you run the 300KB installer file (cat-unistaller.exe) from the ATI site, it will extract a file called ATICimUn.exe (along with a readme file). This 64KB file (ATICimUn) is the actual unistaller app and has a build version of 6.14.10.1005. The zip file that I linked has just this file w/ no readme. Its size is 104KB and its build version is 6.14.10.1010.
 
I do have that 300KB one, but I don't see the text file in the extraction.......only the exe.
 
Use a program like 7-Zip to extract the contents and you will get a 1KB readme named "cat-uninstaller". Here is what it says:

CATuninstaller.exe, 10/08/03

This tool is recommended for advanced users.

This tool is used to uninstall ATI related files from your system.

So, the ...1010 version is the latest one then? Is it that this new one should be used to uninstall newer versions of the ATI drivers (possibly the 5.x series) and the old one for 4.x or what?
 
Nice performance review of the 5.7 drivers here. Their conclusion mirrors my concerns about the huge speed boost percentages claimed in the 5.7 release notes.....

As far as performance is concerned, there certainly isn't any bad news from this driver set for users of 128MB (And we can assume 64MB, if there are many of those still around) boards. However, gamers certainly shouldn't expect the kind of spectacular framerate increases promised in the release notes at the settings they are likely to be playing at. I have no doubt that ATI's quoted improvements at 1600x1200 with 6x anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are correct, but let's be honest - Who uses 128MB boards at those settings?

Just a heads up, after updating to Catalyst 5.7 under Win XP Pro SP2, running a Radeon 9800 pro, I now get consistent VPU Recovers in Far Cry. However, that's running version 1.0 of the game, and may not be the case in newer versions.

There is actually a newer build than 1010...1012 is included with the WDM-bundled package. For some reason it's not included with the separate driver and CP downloads (which is what I always use).

Highly unlikely. ATI would not link an uninstaller at the very top of the CAT 5.7 page if it didn't do as advertised with all CAT versions. I don't know what the changes between the builds are because, as you can see, the readme has no useful information. The app basically removes all ATI-related directories/files/reg entries on your sys. I imagine if you install everything in the default directories and/or all the reg pointers are valid, then there should be no problems (although I can't speak about how well CCC stuff is removed cause I don't use it). If you're paranoid, try DriverCleaner Pro and "LiveUpdate" it often.
 
Hopefully, this is my last ? on this topic. So, 1012 catalyst uninstaller comes with the 5.7 drivers CP?

I have a fresh install of XP with a 9800Pro (catalyst 5.7), SP2, and FarCry v1.3. It runs better than ever. Try the patch and see if it helps.
 
Since I installed the new 5.7 Cats. I've had horrible times with BF2. Haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling due to laziness but...I'm sure that will remedy my problems.

Anyways, the problems that I witnessed were flashing textures and sometimes a total system hang. Doubled with the flashing textures would be textures appearing ALL black...the ground, vehicles, everything. Pisses you off when your in a gun fight and your system hangs for a good 20 seconds... :mad:

Running on a X850 XT, AMD 64 4000+ with a gig of Crucial Ballistix. Will update when I re-install the drivers.

It comes with the "whole enchilada" package (Driver, CP/CCC, WDM) on the CAT 5.7 page. It's the two packages linked for "High Speed". If you want to ensure your using the latest uninstaller, then download either of those two package from now on.
