"No AGP for 7800 GTX!
If you're looking to upgrade to nVidia's latest and greatest, you better make sure your motherboard is up to snuff. The Inquirer is reporting that nVidia will only release the 7800 GTX in the PCI-Express flavor, meaning no AGP version. ATI, however, still plans to support AGP with its next series of video cards." May the gods bless ATI... i mean how the hell else is my cheap ass gonna afford next gen cards :D so what i won't be able to run in there SLi ...atleast i can get my hands on that 32 pipe shading monster

lol

ill bet 5 bucks that the r520 is the last flagship AGP card from ATI

props for ATI here..... even though I wont be needing a new videocard for a long time... what Ati is doing is still a good thing.

That is one way to attempt to get back some of that lost marketshare and will fill a niche. Personally though, I think at this point in the game spending $500+ on an AGP card isn't a very smart move. Motherboards with AGP are stuck with lower speed CPUs, so you can't upgrade to the latest CPU with AGP. Not to mention that if your CPU/mobo ever dies, if you want to upgrade you have to replace cpu/mobo and videocard.

Just doesn't seem wise at this point to buy anything more than a $200-$300 card for an AGP machine, not because of the speed of PCI-E, but because of the CPU upgrade limitations. I know I won't be upgrading my vidcard until I move to a PCI-E based mobo.

you know it's true.....

I had 2 ati cards that Froze randomly during gaming for no reason. A x800 Xt which I had to replace 2 times and a x850 xt pe... THEY BOTH FROZE ....

ATi= joke

How so? Socket 939 is available for those that bought nforce3, and socket 939 is going to be around for a long time.

agree BUT... since that person is wiling to spend 500 for a videocard and already as a pci-e ready cpu... ( 939) might as well throw out 80 bucks for a new motherboard... and sell the old one to make some of the money back... and in the end it won't be too bad...

Hrmm... You've had some bad luck there.

I've not noticed much of a difference between the two lately. Neither one has perfect drivers. Neither on has perfect compatability.

Edit: Back to the original topic. -> I'm going to have to agree. When it comes time to upgrade, I sure doubt it's going to be to an AGP card... This Northwood based system has lasted me a long time, I expect to get some more time out of it... but... X2 is calling.

As the poster above implied, while you can buy a new motherboard that supports the current CPUs and AGP, I would argue the majority of AGP owners now have a Socket 754 or earlier board on the AMD side or on the Intel side a socket 478 or earlier. Though the nForce3 provided the latest CPU socket for a window of time and there are some LGA775 AGP mobos, most people who have AGP systems currently do not have Socket 939 or LGA775, and would hence have to upgrade their motherboard anyway in order to get the latest CPU. I think it would then be a bad move to continue to invest money in a technology that has already been phased out (AGP) while a better alternative is available for the same price. It is already very difficult to find a board with all of the latest chipset features that also supports AGP.

Well in order for me to upgrade (and see VERY little performance increase) to a Socket 939 based system , it would cost the following

AMD 3000+ socket 939 CPU = 140
Nforce 4 SLi motherboard = 180+
PCI-express video card (since i am a serious gamer nothing below 6800GT x800XL range)
400 dollars ...

Also for me to upgrade to a Intel 775 socket T system it would cost the following :

3.2ghz P4 with 2 megs of L2 cache = 289
2 gigs of PC8000 DDR2 (i like overclockers ram) its gonna cost = 538
PCI-express video card 400
new motherboard intel based nforce 4 SLi = 240 dollars

now i have to spend upward of $720 or $1467 (plus shipping) for basicly ONE upgrade ... that bothers me when the performance increase will be little to NONE .. not until there is atleast a 30 precent jump in performance would i even consider shelling out that kind of cash. Yes it means i won't be able to upgrade easy but so what ? i mean here are my system specs

P4 3.2E overclocked to 4.0ghz (which i play games and benchmark with 100 precent stabilty) which is also watercooled
2 gigs of PC-3200 ram
Geforce 6800 Ultra (AGP duh)
2x74 Gig Raptors
2x250 gig Hitachi's serial ata RAID 1
Audigy 2 zs plat

so right now there is no need ..that is why i was happy to see ATI carry its flagship card into the next gen with AGP included . I spent alot of money to get what i got and i am happy with it for atleast another 2+ years ..

Who made the "FX" line? :D

And before you pull one, I'm not loyal to either brand. I've had about a dozen nvidia cards, and about 4 ATi cards. So... :p

why does every one say this mobos with agp have slower cpus tell me what socket 939 or 775 has a cpu @ 4ghz or more none of them

I wouldn't be buying a next gen card so I can get an extra 100fps at 600X800...

I would buy a next gen card so I can run native 1600X1200 with FSAA maybe some MSAA... 4X or more without any lag. I buy a next gen card so I can turn off dynamic LOD. I buy a next gen card so I can use SM3.0 and HDR and all those other good things...

I don't need 4000 more 3dmark points... I don't care about that... but I do care about being able to turn on all the latest features in the 3d apps that I use without losing performance.

Even someone on an athlonXP system is limited by their videocard, currently, if they want to run 1600X1200 or higher with all the options turned on!

I could believe you had one card with a problem, but 3 cards with the same problem = short between the chair and keyboard...Learn how to configure a computer.

This was also a thread about ATi continuing to offer AGP products in their forthcoming product line(s). If you want to thread crap and whine about how evil and crappy ATi is, go to the nVidia forums with the other fan boyz who will gladly cheer right along side of you.

When does the limit for the bandwith of an agp slot end? Really, 32 pipelines and all the other cool stuff on agp 8x compared pci-e 16x. I'm probably totally wrong about it anyway...

it was already built by a top notch company. im sorry but ati sucks..I will take Nvidia over it anyday...that is what im currenty using now and I don't have the problem...

Currently Very few games even use half the total bandwith of the AGP bus .. even if the next gen ATI's somehow max that bandwith .. it will still give the same performance as a PCI-E card ... and i doubt we will max the bandwith on PCI-E for atleast another 5+ years .. the biggest advantage to PCI-E is the fact that it can provide up to 75 watts from the slot .. meaning less PSU hooked needed for the video card ... otherwise thats it .

If ATI goes down, like many of you have said, we all lose. Without competition inovation will not be around either.

What's that? "Necessity is the mother of invention."

You're absolutely right. Competition creates the necessity to improve upon your product AND keep prices low. Seeing as how Nvidia and ATI are fierce competitors in the enthusiast market (Intel has the "integrated" market locked down b/c of their chipsets w/ onboard graphics), if one company goes under, the other can simply charge what it wants for mediocre products. They spend less on R&D, we spend more to buy their products, it's a win-win for them and a lose-lose for us. Competition keeps capitalism alive, and it keeps the consumer happy. I'm unbiased, as I've owned 3 Nvidias and 1 ATI. 2 of my Nvidias were...sucky. The MX440 and the FX5200. I managed to get 2 neutered cards in a row. The 440 came with my dell, the 5200 was a (supposed) upgrade, but it was the BFG 5200 with 256 MB of RAM, and it actually overclocked well. The next card was a 9800 Pro (OMG <3) and now I have a BFG 6800 GT (even more <3).

no only the ATI fans loose... there will always be someone else....

Q: Will you use HSI to make AGP-based GeForce 7800 boards?
We are not disclosing plans for AGP at this time, but that is certainly possible with the flexibility of our HSI chip.

Nvidia states this in their faq about the 7800gtx. They state that its possible. So do you really think that one company pitted against another is going to bow out and let the other have a good chunk of the market? If you do than I have lost some respect for you. If ati does it then NV will. Its simple business.

loose? or lose? ....there's no one besides ATI that's close to nvidia in performance

Here's an idea. If you're an Nvidia fan, avoid this section of the forums. It's most likely going to piss you off and lower your IQ to the point where you start posting flame bait. Thank you come again.

If you say so slick. Any particular reason you are buying systems built by another company, rather than your own? Maybe because you can't set one up properly?

I had a 9800np that I sold to buy an X800 Pro, that I just sold last week to buy at X800XT AIW. All of these cards were in o/c systems and the cards were themselves overclocked. Not a single issue did I have, except where I pushed the CPU or VC overclock to far.

Sounds to me like you should quit blaming ATi for sub-par system building.

Ok, just because there will be an AGP R520, doesn't mean that it will be released in a timely manner and in any quantity. ATI was extremely slow to bring the PCI-E version of the original X800 line to market. Since the situation is now reversed with PCI-E being the focus, AGP could be introduced MONTHS after the PCI-E version

I can't remember who's doing it, but there's at least one vidcard manufacuturer with flip cards. One side is AGP, other side is PCI-E. And then there's ULi mobos, with full speed AGP 8x AND SLi!

True enough, but sometimes like Reality TV, we just have to see how low the IQ is in this section :p

Of course while we continue to wait for R520, adding in AGP and a 600MHz core isn't too much to ask in the revisions to release ;)

Opps, looks like you were right after all.

Brucee, you need to go away or get yourself banned.

Listen. I am an Avid Nvidia Fan. I prefer their cards to ATi as well. But I owned 5 ATi Cards in my life.

Rage II
Rage Maxx
Radeon DDR
Radeon 8500
Radeon 9700Pro

And they all were outstanding cards. I loved them, espically the 9700Pro which I still use to this day. 2.5Years old and running strong.

So your little "Quote" of ATI = Freeze/crash.... looks like user error, and you just dont know how to properly build a system. Thats what it looks like to all the rest of us here. So stop embarrassing yourself. k Thx

It is possible to get a bunch of bad cards in a row, especially if you don't learn after the second time that the person your buying them from is the kid next door.

Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that they were probably overheating
nah... its just ATI's fault.

Your obviously too stupid to properly install a video card then.

I mean what can you expect, he probably put it in a PCI slot and couldnt figure out what the hell the problem was :p

You guys sure are harsh on the poor guy...You don't know what happened really. Yeah, maybe he OC'ed to much or whatever but calling him stupid ...??. I feel !!!!!!-ism from you guys. He obviously put it together right because he said that he was playing the game, now if you built it wrong, should i say put it together wrong, it just would'nt run at all.

seems to me that you should stfu....couse you just don't know... I don't have time to built my own... Set one up???? it's already built and set up allYou have to do is plug in the monitor and the rest...ati just can't make good cards these days... ati lost it a while ago when they came out with the x800 cards...and there 5.6 catalyst drivers are a joke...thank god for Nvidia comming to the rescue...

Obviously.. you can't read. I said it was an already built system..in so many threads.
