ATI a takeover target?

I think to many people are counting their chickens before they hatch. ATi has been at this game for a very long time (13+ years I believe) If anything, nvidia will rule for a bit again, like the Geforce 2-4 series, then ATi, or some other company, will pull out a 9700.

Then buy some cheap stock! :D

Thanks Brent. The fact that you guys don't have one of the R520s yet says a lot to me about it's being a long way from available.

Can you comment on whether your in the process of testing Crossfire X850s yet? IMO that was a TOTAL paper launch, to at least hear you guys have working review samples would dispel some of that stigma. (and I don't think it would violate your NDA to say something like, "I've used Crossfire".

I have not seen a Crossfire setup in person yet.

I'd love to see AMD buy ATI and threaten Intel's dominance in the integrated graphics market, but thats unlikely to happen. I would however hate to see Intel purchase ATI...

Intel dominates the integrated graphics market because most people buy Intel chips, on Intel boards. It has nothing to do with the Intel graphics chips being any good.

Same way Internet Explorer dominates the browser market, because every copy of windows includes IE.

If Dell started using AMD boards there would be a chance for Intel to have some sort of competition.

I can only imagine how much profit Intel would be making if they got ahold of ATI as well after just sealing the deal with Intel CPU's in Apple machines. The Apple deal was huge for Intel already and its looking to be huge the rest of us as well because with Intel CPU's in Apple systems now there will very likely be a push by Apple to release a PC version of OSX to compete against Microsoft and Windows. Apple could steal away a huge market share in the OS department from Microsoft easily and could give Longhorn a run for its money.

You would have to have a lot of game companies really feel the need to compile and optimize for OS X and only the big guys could afford it ( Blizz, Valve, etc), so as far as games goes, this wouldn't exactly kill Microsoft. Also, then apple becomes nothing but an OS and minor specialty hardware manufacturer, oh wait, I think they are anyway.

As far as an CPU maker buying a video card maker, I think this would be a bad thing (TM). It would reduce the quality of running a, say, ATI product on an INTEL/AMD system or vice versa. Having flexbility between makers that adhere to standards so you can mix and match helps competition and benefits the consumer.

Which is why I say I would hate for Intel to get into discrete graphics.

Releasing Crossfire for X850s wouldn't do ATI much good, it's in the high high end and would get its ass whooped by 7800s. I think it's pretty logical for them to postpone it until the r520 release, where it will do real magic for the performance crazy.

Intel wouldn't necessarily have to absorb ATI, it could work independently like their network or flash divisions.

The specuation assumes that Intel would even want to buy ATI. There are pretty big reasons why they wouldn't: 1) ATI isn't very profitable, and never has been, 2) Intel already has the mass-market graphics lead and licenses graphics designs, and 3) pulling support from nvidia (socket T license) and AMD wouldn't look too good right now. :p

Ok everyone, close your eyes and picture something here for a minute. Imagine waiting and waiting and finally one day the release date for the new 32 pipe ATI R520 "Fudo" chip is here. You race off to find a store that has them in stock and luckily there are a few that do at inflated prices. You whip out your credit card and before you know it the new beast of a video card has been purchased and you have your order number. You later receive your tracking number and you nervously wait as you follow the current location of the video card online. Finally the day for arrival is today and the FedEx/UPS guy walks up to your door and has you sign for a box. You race to your room thinking OMG its finally here and you tear off the side panel on your case and prepare to install it in your PC. You rip open the retail box and pull out the card and just before you have a chance to slam the card into the system you catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye...

The sticker on the heatsink says....

INTEL INSIDE!!!

Microsoft Windows is only as popular as it is today because it really doesn't have any competition. Linux isn't user friendly enough nor does it have the backing to attack Microsoft head on. Apple does. Windows is plagued with issues today such as rampant viruses, spyware, trojans, everything you can think of. If you dont have anti-virus programs and firewalls and spyware managers installed from the moment the PC is connected to the internet you will be infected within a matter of minutes. If you have ever used MAC OSX then you would know it would hold a fair amount competition against Microsoft's Windows.

*rolleyes* the only reason mac doesn't have lots of viruses is because no one uses it. If they got a sizeable market share then people would make spyware/viruses for Mac.

I think it's those damn mice that have stopped Mac from being dominant. One button... *grumbles* That and no support for games. (Yes, I know you can use multiple button mice on Mac, but I think the one-button thing is a common image for a Mac b/c that's the way I think of them.)

BS, SPECULATION, ETC....

Did you hear that Aliens were going to do a hostile take over of planet earth? Seriously, Tom Cruise and his scientology friends told me. But luckily as an OT3 I know that Xenu has already vanquished the aliens with a Hydrogen bomb, and I need to remind their spirits of the pain of that!! :) Ok j/k

Seriously, gossip and rumors based on pure speculation are a waste of everyone's time. At least give me something based on insider trading information or a deep throat contract.

Just b/c their stock went up doesn't mean someone is taking them over. All it means is possibly some analyst at a big institutional investor decided to buy a few shares (relative to the size of their HUGE portfolios).

Nvidia doesnt have near enough money and Intel wouldnt touch them since they're already dominating the market and under constant scrutany for monopolizing. If Intel backed ATI under their current working conditions Nvidia would be flushed down the toilet so fast it wouldnt be funny. Not before a large lawsuit that is. Stupid to assume this now. Little under a year and two consoles will be pumping out with millions of chips in them from ATI. Guess that slipped them. ATI is in about as much danger as every other small time little known graphics supplier out now that no one talks about. Conspiracy theories.

AMD + ATI = okay

Intel + ATI =

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Seriously people, like many said before me, it's all hype and speculation...although Mac going Intel was also a rumour...and look what happened... ;)

What is "Mac going Intel?"

In case you didn't hear:
Apple used PowerPC chips (made by IBM) in their computers. Now Apple is going to switch to x86 chips (Intel specifically). :)

Edit: thanks DejaWiz, for clarifying. ;)

Ok, yeah, I knew about that. The Mac thing just threw me off. I guess "Apple going Intel" would have, yeah, goodbye then. I'm going to go and just lurk in this god forsaken place.

ATi isnt going anywhere. Dont believe all the rumors you hear on the internet.

What about the xbox360? You guys don't think thats going to help then out of this?

Not much. The reason MS bought the design and handled manufacturing themselves was to lower production cost. That means less money goes to ATI.

If the rumors are true ATI went straight to 90nm with their high end card first. And not just that, but rumors say 32pipes, fp16 HDR with AA support, SM 3.0, etc.... If that's true, that sure is a lot of stuff to cram into a new process you aren't familiar with using yet.

How much of an impact would the shift from 24 to 32 be? The other features are new and techniques will eventually be streamlined for those. But they've been using 24bit for a long time and everything they have is streamlined for that. If they switch to 32, there might be a lot of optimization problems since everything was previously done on 24, especially in the driver level.

Pipelines are completely different than rendering bit depth. All current ATI and nVidia cards can do 32bit rendering. The pipelines are contained in silicon, and adding more means more transistors to cram into the core.

no ya jackass nub it's supposed to make me rich.

I am a NVidia Fan, I prefer their cards to ATis but I dont want to see them go under.

Competition is our (the customers) best friend.

It allows us a choice, drives prices down and allows for each company to offer us better products....

edit: @ $13.25 a share

You should have bought them last week when they were $11.50.

Of course if the R520 tanks you could probably pick up a bunch at $1.35 in a few months :p

Actually incorrect, the main reason was because Nvidia was fucking around with contract agreements on the origonal Xbox. ATI is still going to rake in a very nice profit, if you dont think so, then you're in denial.

so true...

i have faith in ati tho.

There's a fundamental problem with being a "fan" or putting "faith" in any corporation. The sole reason for a corporation to do well is to take money out of your pocket, albiet you get a product, they still profit. Going with the best and most reasonable product is the only rational way of thinking about being a consumer.

At least we have !!!!!!s to buy top of the line products when they first come out and experiment with them at their cost.

a takeover is doubtful

wall street works like this.

analyst get his company/friends/ powerbrokers / powerful people to load up.... then he makes a rumor like this.. stock shoots up , people unload, make BANK.

illegal = yes,,, happens = yes.

when Q4 earnings come out ati will hit 11's or lower..

i expect volume to return to normal next week and then the stock will start sinking back down to 11.

Q4 is going to blow and Q1 wont be spectacular ether accoring to ati mgt.

thats also incorrect.

microsoft was the one fucking around. they wanted to shaft nvidia and nvidia stood up and fought them. nvidia won the court battle thus forcing microsoft to pay x amount per gpu like the ORIGINAL contract stated.

mst wanted to go w/ nvidia again but nvidia refused thus ati picked it up.
nvidia got the better deal in my opinion by picking up the psx3 as it will have a much higher market share.

I personally hope Texas Instruments will buy ATi if anybody has to. They know how to make profits, innovate, and would definately make the most of ATi's resourses. Intel would probably cannibalize them.

Don't forget that NVIDIA is also getting money from the Xbox2 because of backwards compatibility.
