ATI 9800 run current games?

Hello all,

I have an older compaq system that still uses the agp bus, I am wanting to give this system to my kids, who love to play the sims 2. Would an ATI 9800 pro 12bmb ram run this game, and possibly the game Far Cry or FEAR?

Edit: or would a ati 9700 pro be better?
 
I had a RADEON 9800 Pro 128.
And you can play those games just fine!
Although you won't be able to keep the graphics bumped to the max. You can still enjoy them just the same.
My radeon 9800 died and I recently replaced it with a X1850. And I did play those games (except sims2 on it)
 
R9800 really isn't the card you want to run FEAR on.
My old AXP 3000+, 1024mb ram, r9800pro 128mb got only 20fps (1024x768) in FEAR with low-medium settings w/o AA
 
It'll run sims2 quite well, with high quality settings, but no AF or AA.

You can run the Sims2 with medium settings and 2x AF on a 9250 with 128mb... 1024x768...

haha... I used to have one...
 
Looking at benchies, Sims 2 seems to be such a systems hog and for no good reason.

But yeah, I had a 9800Pro a couple years ago. Played Doom3 and FarCry just fine. Excellent card. Now a 9800NP? Not sure.
 
i have a 9800 pro 256mb ram
and it runs games ok [mostly as stated above games like far cry
fear will run ok but not as good as you would probally like
 
depends on what size montior your trying to run. I had a 256mb 9800 pro, ran my 17incher for a while no problem at 1280x1024. Farcry, doom3 all played well. Fear not so much. I oced it quite a bit didn't help much in performance maybey 5-10fps. I think if you want to play fear at reasonable frame rates it might be time for an upgrade.
 
I have a 9800 pro on a 1.4 tbird cpu on an old system. It acutally plays FEAR ok at 800 x 600. Far cry is better, but not great.
 
I'm still on my Radeon 9800 128... :mad: It runs Far Cry, HL2, etc fine... however, the 512 system RAM is problematic. ;)
 
only reason i upgraded my 9800 pro is cause after 3-4 years it died on me... its a great card and can still hold its own...

My wife still has one, and I swear it's a far better card than my piece of shit X1600..
 
I'm still using a 9800pro 256 on my gaming PC. Only newer game I play on it is NWN2 and it plays quite well on medium settings at 1152x864 (window).
Using: Athlon XP 3000+ w/512 DDR400
 
I'm still running a 9800 Pro and I played through FEAR with most settings off at 1024x768. It ran HL2 pretty well at similar settings but I can barely run CS:S. Although I think I might have better luck with something other than an Athlon 2600+. :rolleyes:
 
I used a 9800 NP for about three years, from October 2003 to December 2006. The fan died on it about a year and a half ago, so I replaced it with a passively cooler Schooner HSF. I mostly played WoW at 1600x1200 with all the details turned down but even towards the end I was still having a perfectly good gaming experience with the likes of FEAR and UT2k4.

It's now powering my secondary system, very solid card.
 
9800xt plays source and engines based around doom3 fine. some of the heavier stuff like far cry runs..... but not perfectly, obviously eye candy turned off.

so, again it depends.

I have an X700Pro.. basically the same thing as a 9800pro ... or around there... +/- 5 fps..


But you are definitely right about better luck with something other than a athlon xp....

I get a constant 100 fps ( I capped it ) with my x700pro .. it's all in the cpu power with CS:S


also, I run fear fine at lower res. and low settings.. dont know about far cry though.
 
Yes, you can run Far Cry at reasonable settings, ( note- REASONABLE varies greatly from person to person, especially here ).

My old gamer was an OC'ed XP2500 with a gig of Corsair XMS, and a 9800PRO. I used to LAN alot with that rig and played FarCry, BF2, COD, and FEAR with it. I finally upgraded to an X800XL because ATI closed them out for $119 a while ago. You'll probably have to adjust the settings per game to find a combination that runs best for you.

The 9800PRO was a great card in it's day and it's still a decent card today. I used mine for about 3 years. I still have it, but the videocards I currently use ( 6800GS OC'ed and X850XT ) are faster. Currently, I have the 9800PRO and a FX5900ULTRA lying around doing nothing.
