Posting from my new 4G. I still can't believe how small it is. My sausage fingers make typing hard but I'm dealing with it. So far so good. :)
 
This thing has really caught my attention. Wish it was just a tad stronger so I can run work programs. If it did I would be so done.

Actually, I should see the min requirements. Wish it was a tad less but the size and weight drive the price.
 
Forgive the noob post, but is there anything that can run Apple Lossless files (or FLAC) on this bad boy? (Coming from an external HD)
I am totally uneducated on Linux.
 
I know there is but I don't remember the name off hand.

Saw some talk of it on the eeeuser.com forums. you might have to do some searching there if no one else knows offhand
 
What bios version are you guys using? I'm now using 8804 but I'm not sure if it's really meant to handle 900mhz.
 
Got mine today, pretty nifty. My roommate has fallen for it as well, and is thinking of replacing his current laptop with one.
 
i got foobar2000 working on ubuntu.... I don't see why you couldn't get it to work on xandros...
 
I used it in the store... It doesn't do too much. It's light, small, and shitty. The keyboard is near-impossible to type on, as the keys are tiny, and are in weird places. All it does is internet, music, open office, and i think that's it. 4 gigs of hdd space is worthless...
The only plus side I can see is the operating system is one of the most basic things I've ever seen.

It doesn't do much? It's a computer. It does what you tell it. Basically you are saying you don't know very much.

I'm sure what he meant was that as configured, it doesn't do much. Or it doesn't do much of the things HE would like to do with it.
 
Anyone else having the issue where the EEE can't write to SDHC cards? Seems like a lot of people at eeeuser.com are having it.
 
been looking around at eeeuser.com and i have to say i'm impressed. overclocking is happening already. i saw a score of 3000+ on 3DMark01 as well. people report plenty of apps work such as Photoshop CS3 (kinda pointless though). saw a vid of serious sam running really well. most if not all the older Q3 engine games work. hell i'd be set if i could play ET on it. i'm really leaning towards buying one now and selling my desktop...will just be a lot easier if i can be completely mobile. btw, do the 16GB SDHC cards work in these? i know the 8GB ones do (which is prolly what most ppl use for installing XP). such a nice machine...lol

Have you check the write protect tab on the memory card or new memory card reader drivers?

Helped a friend get it running on ubuntu. So far the biggest issue over xandros is that the madwifi drivers for linux that come with it are not properly GPLed, so if you install ubuntu, or some other linux os, you have to use ndiswrapper to get the wifi to work (at least for the time being). It doesn't seem to take up too much more space, but does take a bit longer to boot up. On the other hand, it seems a lot less buggy than the standard install, and definitely prefer it over xandros. As for what i think of it:
The keys are small, but I'd imagine just take a bit of getting used to.
I reallllly would like more vertical resolution, as some (many) standard ubuntu menu's are getting cut off at the bottom, and when compiz is enabled, I am unable to move the window any higher.
The battery life is good, he was reporting around 3 hours at max brightness.
The inability to upgrade the ram without voiding the warranty is kind of a turn-off.

I threw Ubuntu onto mine and was not pleased with the wifi performance at all. I have a linksys 300N and with the madwifi driver in xandros the thing flies. Load the drivers up in ndis under ubuntu and use WPA and bam system crawls. Running the router without encryption isnt really an option living in a metropolitan area...so I loaded up the default OS and kicked it over to advanced mode and its stable. Loaded up Firefox 3 Beta 1 and it runs fine...pinned the sources list and I am happily apt-getting everything I could ever need :)

When the drivers go native for ubuntu ill be the first person to get them up and going. As with all things linux time improves everything.:cool:
 
I'm expecting mine (4GB) tomorrow. My goal is to get a very basic install of SolidWorks running on it. Anyone have any input on XP vs. a simulated OS? This could be pretty cool...
 
I believe the Surf has non upgradeable RAM and lesser battery life and is a bit cheaper.

^^^ the ability to upgrade the ram is worth the $50 extra if you ask me. hell thats how much i paid for a 2GB upgrade for it :)

i'll post pics later. and luckily i only have one stuck pixel. and amazingly its barely noticable :)
 
1st post from Galaxy Black eee. This thing is cool! I think I am relatively less screwed by the petite keyboard because I've always been a two-fingers-of-fury typist.

Oh yeah- with 800x480, I can still run Star Control 2 in full resolution!

its actually been confirmed that the 4G Surf's ram isn't soldered on so you can upgrade it. so really the only hit you take is the webcam and less battery life. makes me kinda wish i got it now cuz i was unsure when i was looking at them so i sprung for the regular 4G
 
That is great news. Question now is can the battery be changed? |There is always the option of a charger close by.
 
They have already moved 10k of these things. I'm sure they will start releasing batteries as the product cycle continues.
 
ill wait and see if they come out with one that has a 10" or similar sized screen, a screen that fills the whole top flap, no huge boarders.. even if thats where the speakers are i would rather have no speakers and a larger screen.

there are no plans for a 10" model right now. unless costs come down i doubt we'll see one anytime soon anyway. these 7" screens are all over the place and the prices for them are low.
 
Seems like some ppl are saying that the 2g is not soldered on memory and it now comes with 512mb as well.

The 8GB seems to be selling but tough to find.
 
Ordered one from zipzoomfly....gonna sell my compaq laptop soon. should be here by tomarrow...or friday...
 
Bought my wife the 4G for Christmas and she loves it. Installed XP SP3 RC1 to the 4GB internal and bought another 4GB flash drive for the SDHC slot from Frys for $20. XP runs nice and peppy (no low rpm hdd) and all data and other programs like office 03 got moved/installed to the other new flash drive. I didn't see a reason to pay $100 more for the 8G because all you get is 4GB more internal and 512MB more RAM. I can install 8GB more internal (via SDHC slot) and swap the 512MB for 2GB of RAM for less then $100 from newegg if I wanted, so why get the 8G and then take out half my investment when I eventually upgrade to 2GB of RAM? And installing new RAM doesn't void your warranty, ASUS came out and said that themselves.

Anyway, yeah for those of you that don't get it... it's not a laptop. It's a UMPC which is a class of it's own, a cross between a laptop and a PDA. If you really want to know more, checkout www.eeeuser.com, the forums/wiki there have a lot of information including all the games it can run, what mods are being done, etc. I have to say, the best part about it really is that my wife's eeepc fits in her purse.

Heh, what a designer purse is the size of a credit card or something? :p It's a regular size "Mom purse", it just slides down in the middle section. If you haven't seen how small they actually are, hit youtube and catch some videos.
 
Rumor has it that there is a 8.9" screen version of the eepc that sports up to 16gb of flash memory that will be announced at CES.

Runs XP suprisingly well with 2GB ram on the cellery non overclocked.

Also takes up much less space then the default linux distro on it and runs faster.

BTW, do not put a swap file/paging file on it.
 
I don't know if I can wait a few months more for the new revisions. I can carry this on the subway going and coming back from work. I don't know if a 13.3" Lappy would feel as comfy toting around. Now the only thing holding me back is the fact that the 4G solid state is solderd on and I'd like at least to have the ability to change it. If it is possible. I may just buy it! I may just do the 4g Surf and add a 8GB SDHC and 1Gb of mem.
BTW can anyone confirm if the new 2G Surfs have the memory soldered on as well...
