its more about the video card....what dx12 in this game does is even the playing field for weaker cpus. For example my setup is a solid 30% difference over amd weaker cpus but scores exactly same in the benchmark avg fps. This game is almost the exact opposite of games from before it. The cpu used to be a huge performance difference but in this game its really just the video card (in your case that 980ti has twice the video power of mine) in other words if i had your same card we be almost dead even fps

who said it was a bench marking tool? I only showed it to show the cpu usage is nowhere near taxed hard..Me and others with same card but using way different cpus are getting almost exact results. its all i meant

Primetime is right CPU wont matter much. Hell even the 8370 was very close to the 6600k using DX12 whereas it was way behind in DX11. If you are seeing something it is far more likely a difference in Ram or SSD/HDD than your CPUs especially between Intel generations which will likely be a lot more equal in DX12.

CPU makes quite a big difference... Look at fx8350/8150 results posted earlier, and guy with fury X and fx9590

Maybe you should look up the tests done by reviewer which is far better indicator than some random people with vastly different setups ( I dont recall right now which one it was and don't have time to look, gotta get to work).

If you look at the top of this page you'll see a fury X user under-performing relative to the [h] review by >10%

This in overclocked FURY X btw, a stock FURY X gets :

That isn't possible as far as I know. VSR gives me:
2048 X 1536 4:3 (Other than DOSBox I don't see a use for this)
2560 X 1600 16:10 (Works perfectly fine from my testing)
3840 X 2400 16:10 (Broken for me)

Even if I add a custom 1080p letterboxed resolution into the driver settings none of the 16:9 resolutions above 1080p showed up ingame. Hm.. I'll try editing the .ini but I doubt that will work.

Forcing the resolution in the Ashes .ini let me run it but it was buggy. The screen was not scaled to my native resolution so I was only seeing the upper left 1920x1200 portion. My FPS was actually lower than my 1600p results.:alien:

Ill give you credit there is some difference but much less than a typical heavy cpu usage game. The point being someone with a 980ti was comparing there results to mine saying how its my cpu holding me back -please! lol in my case Im 100% gpu limited

What is it with people on this forum and percentages...

First of all, the user I quoted has an OVERCLOCKED Fury X.

The [H] results are of a STOCK Fury X.

Let's assume, for the sake of conversation, that he is actually running at stock. That's 15% performance difference, the card in the [H] review is performing 15% better; and it's at STOCK. That's more than the performance gain from async shaders.

An FX9590 isn't an 8 year old cpu, and he is running it at 4.8GHz

You're less likely to be CPU bottlenecked because you have a much less powerful GPU, I don't think I need to point out that CPU bottleneck will be more evident as framerate increases, right ?

Nitrous engine was designed to scale up to an impressive 16 logical processors cores. So the speed of individual cores has less of an effect on performance since less instructions are packed per core the more cores are available. Still, the less the CPU has to be involved with graphics in DX12, the better.

Yeah it's impressively multithreaded, average load on all my cores is ~70% during the benchmark run. Nonetheless, it's pretty clear from the benchmark results that single thread performance is still hugely important

Well is not complicated, if you want to see CPU impact then run the game at same settings except :

Full 16 logical core (LC) CPU speed = X

Then again 16 LC underclocked at speed X/2.

Then again at LC/2 (balancing full and logical cores) @ full speed X.

Then again run at LC/2 & X/2.

Should give you scaling performance as it relates to CPU logical cores use and speed using the same CPU.

What i think would be more interesting is to see the impact of the Async scheduler on/off at 16 LC and see how much work it is actually doing in background.

Because a 6 fps difference at 30fps is the same as a 6 fps difference at 100fps.

47 to 52 is 5 frames going from a Celeron to a 6600k (OC) using a FuryX, from a 2 core/thread to a 4 core/8 thread CPU. That is quite pertinent as far as CPU bottlenecking discussions go.

I would suggest that you NOT COMPARE THESE AotS RESULTS TO EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These were NOT done on the same systems, at different clocks, different video cards, different CPUs, different authors, and very likely different drivers, and possibly different game versions. Brent is doing GPU Reviews, I am looking at CPU based benchmarks.

Yeah :)
But the lower settings would still be interesting, after all many strategy games are played on laptops, so using I7 Intel CPUs on a desktop should still be interesting, and APU type CPU-GPU will the way forward at the lower end of the gaming industry.

My benchmarks were run at 1200-1205 MHz core and 546 MHz VRAM on my Fury X. This is higher than most people will even temporarily clock theirs so it gives a best case scenario for current generation Fiji. Please keep in mind that anything between 0% GPU bound and 100% GPU bound is just an educated guess by the benchmark. It would really have to run through the same thing twice (in a headless mode) to get a more accurate CPU framerate.

With my Fury X overclocked this high my FX-9590 @4.8 GHz is not quite enough to keep up at 1080p/1200p. The framerate at those resolutions is still high enough that the gameplay is smooth, but it could be even better with a faster CPU. There isn't stuttering or anything like that to worry about though. Ashes of the Singularity makes better use of my processor than any game I've seen thus far. (y)

1600p "Crazy" was bottlenecked slightly by the CPU in some sections of the benchmark, but not enough that most players would worry about it. Again, the average framerate is totally playable for a RTS. It's not perfect, but then again dialing the preset back from "Crazy" to "Extreme" (which ONLY reduces the terrain detail in a way I can't be bothered to notice) gives a 25% boost and takes the average framerate from 41.1 to 51.6.

Most of the graph shows the green data points (CPU) being ahead. If you view the full size image the areas I highlighted have a mixture of green and blue dots. In those specific locations the CPU was holding the framerate back slightly.

A Haswell-E at 4.5GHz makes it really easy to get GPU limited. :) The FX 8370 is probably "half" the CPU that the Haswell is.

My reliable tests were at 2560x1600 not 2560x1440. I did 1440 once and it didn't scale right because it's not a supported VSR option with my monitor. I couldn't screenshot the graph at the end because of this. Oh and note that AotS has a bug reporting the resolution as 0x0 randomly in the benchmark graph but the text log always seems to show the resolution properly.

it'll be sweet if this type of improvement can be had in other DX12 games!

Wow! DX12 actually can make use of more cores. Yes I hope more DX12 makes use of the whole cpu. One could argue that it was software holding back AMD cpu's vice just a weak cpu. Weak per core but not weak whole cpu. Except for floating point where AMD just bombs.
 
System in sig. DX12, dual GPU mode, crazy settings, 3 v 3 online game with me hosting. Flawless performance. No slowdown on my end. Six cores 12 threads. Game did not slowdown once. It never seemed to get quite a crazy as a Supcom game though.

I think it is a worthy benchmark. You a need a good rig for this.
 
With my Haswell-E 6 core my general impression during actual gameplay is that the game responds better at 4.0GHz than at 3.7. This is the first game where pushing Haswell-E seems to actually make a difference. Just my opinion.
