Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead

ArmA2 isn't and never was a "high-profile" game.

Yes it is.

But regardless of how much media attention it gets, it still has absolutely terrible animations, some of the worst VO acting in gaming history (not talking about the strange in-combat quasi-synthesized voices), and other quite poor finishing touches. OK, so Bohemia Interactive is an indie developer. OK. ArmA II is a great concept. Fine. So does being an indie developer give them a free pass for people to ignore the fact that their great idea has a miserable execution?

I will admit that in OA, it is better. I have seen that personally. But it still has miles to go.

I'll agree that the voice acting could be a lot better, though a lot of the weird-sounding voices are due to the fact that a lot of the dialogue is dynamic and pieced together with various sound clips. Given that, I think it sounds decent for what it does.

That's kind of the way ArmA has always been; it's good for all of what it has to accomplish. Sure, graphics could be better, there could be better physics, etc., but no one's computer would ever be able to run it with the vast amount of AI and scripting going on all at once.

I guess I don't consider it a "high-profile" game when the first game had little to no advertising and Operation Arrowhead has more, but is still not as mainstream as most games. Many game shops, when asked about OA, didn't even know what it was.

I agree with everything you wrote. I sure wish Bohemia Interactive was a big developer that could give ARMA 3 the huge budget it deserves.

But they are a small developer making a very niche game that tries to do so much.

You are not going to get this kind of insanely ambitious mil sim game from any big name developer or publisher. When Codemasters made Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising they predictibly made it much less hardcore than ARMA 2.

Basically, its put up with the lack of polish that the small budget entails, or not get this kind of game at all.

There is some lack of polish admittedly, and damn if I wish the last few steps of the 100 mile journey could be accomplished by BIS.

However I find Call of Duty, BF Bad Company and the other "polished" games to be extremely lacking in comparison. So while you focus on terrible voice acting as a problem, I find the lack of a mission editor (worth the money for the game alone), flexibility in design, ungodly amounts of weapons and units, insane modding, amazing community missions and campaigns, and other things that the polished games are completely and utterly lacking to be a much bigger issue.

Having played the series since OFP, it has basically limited my enjoyment of these other FPS's due to how constricting they are. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing Crysis and COD, but I feel like they are bubble gum. You chew it for a few minutes, enjoy it,and then quickly bore of it and move on - >Of course that makes it the perfect business model, because you move on to the next piece of gum.

Just seems to me people only want to focus on the few easily overlooked problems, while missing out on the greater picture.

Good points, nubbin77. Show me another game that has such a rich mod community. The ACE2 mod team has substantially changed and improved the way Arma 2 plays. So much so that I have a hard time enjoy the vanilla game anymore. I am holding off on Operation Arrowhead until such time as they can get the mod going on that.

Your not going to see ACE mod on OA for a while plus many of the ACE features in Arma 2, BIS copied and implemented on OA mate so i dont see a reason why you would avoid OA until such a patch comes out.

What I find shocking is how terrible the muzzle flashes are for all the guns. It's just a static image and it seriously turns me off from playing the game. I don't understand how they could overlook this considering the rest of the detail on the guns and vehicles.

ACE 1.5 is already out for OA.

What about current performance on windows 7 ? arma ALWAYS ran better on XP, less stuttering and much higher framerates, i still got win xp on dual boot but I use win7 99% of the time these days and going between OSs back forth for a single game is a major PITA.

almost every game runs better on xp

yea but if you check the arma mark thread on BI forums you'll see HUGE differences like 2280 points on 7 / vista and 5000 on XP, we re not talking about 5% differences here and there.

points? wtf? POINTS? this is not 3dbenchmark or whatever you call that useless tool. this is a game and fps numbers are what counts not points?

Performs perfect on win 7 64bit. Whoever really thinks Xp still runs games better is not up on the info.

The ARMA 2 1.07 patch really brought the perf up to par.

How's the online coop servers for US players? On Arma 2 there are few big game servers but I have noticed an uptick in more new players since the Steam deal for $20.

Are you referring to coop campaign or just general coop? I have seen quite a few servers running Domination games and a few doing other coop missions.

Pretty much this. I'm sure it still runs slightly better on XP but it's really not the huge difference it was back in the day.

just got my 480gtx today and i did some arma 2 oa benchmarks.

first test i got 35fps with every single thing set to max, i then lowered the PP and got 39.

I finaly disabled HT and OC my cpu from stock speed to 3ghz and got 56fps hehe/

im sure if i clock it up to 3.5gh i should really hit 60fps lol. brilliant and OA is very very demanding.

Also. idle temps are at 50ish and load temps are 80ish. i can hear the fan, its louder than a 260gtx but not that loud.

Cool pixs!

Hey I just noticed a drawing for Arma 2 Arrowhead over here.

Hope this is cool with [H]

They have released a pretty comprehensive demo. For those that are on the fence this will give you a chance to check it out.

nice! i'll download it this weekend. thanks for the heads up PanzerBoxb

This is strange, i did another benchmark yesterday with the exact same settings and this time i am only getting 49fps? at first i was getting 35!!! This is because in my shortcut target i had -cpucount 7 and -threads 8. i disabled and removed that and got 49fps. couldnt get it to run at 56fps anymore which was very very strange.

i then disabled v sync manually and it diddnt make much difference. i checked to see if my cpu OC and HT is disabled and it is. whats bizare is that when i downloaded cpu-Z, it was showing me that my cpu is running at 1.8ghz?? yet the BLCK is set to 150(visible from both bios and cpu z) to make my cpu run at 3ghz..

I love the idea of Arma, but it seemed to me like if I was always seen by the CPU before I could see them..or right when I turned around a corner if their back was to me they would still turn around and headshot me in a split second....maybe this was fixed with a patch but I haven't played since...

So if I buy Operation Arrowhead will get everything like all armies, all weapons all crap in the game or do i need to get the regular ARMA 2 for the stuff in it also?
