I gave Arma 2 several chances and tried to play the campaign several times last year. But it just wouldn't run properly on a gtx295. So I eventually gave up on it. Maybe they updated the engine with this, I might give it a try in a few months.

Yeah, they need some major graphics and game optimizations before I can really consider this. I am sure I'll be ok once I make my next upgrade, by my current Quad core and GTX260 just does not run this game the way it needs to for me.

Yep didn't see any point running wihtout AA and without a decent amount of Field of View.

These screenshots look good thou.

I have ArmA 2 and love to play the many community made missions, just not a fan of the strain it puts on my GTX260. Really curious as to how good these "Graphics and Engine Optimizations" are going to be.

are there any mods that fix the graphical issues with the game? Anything that overhauls it like stalker complete?

I have a 260gtx and yeah its demanding but on high settings it looks better than most games out their imho.

Some believe this game will run significantly better than Arma2 simply because there won't be so much grass and foliage to render, given the desert setting.

I have heard that an SSD will significantly improve framerates and smooth things out (more so than other games). Can someone confirm/deny this?

I could see that helping a lot seems to be a lot of file swapping - I cant remember how much memory the game can use.

Yeah, the performances tweaks are supposed to work on the original game too if you have it installed.

Is it just me, or are those 'destructible buildings' just canned animations? They don't look dynamic at all. Also, with the tanks, can you not drive them and gun at the same time? I wouldn't trust NPC's driving/gunning.

Yea they are canned animations but their better then nothing really. yes i think u can drive and gun as well.

And another thing. this game is bets played online not offline

You control where you want them to go if you are gunning, if driving, they do a decent job of targeting and killing. There is a manual fire mode also but you can't control the direction of the turret. The game is meant to be realistic so it only makes sense that you don't gun and drive at the same time.

I still cannot get into ARMA 2 SP, I really dislike the whole small squad, special forces kinda thing. I think Flashpoint (1) ruined all the other games for me. The MP is still awesome if you get with people that work together and use voice chat.

I can understand and respect that. However, it is a single player game. Exceptions to realism need to be made for game play in some cases. If you can jump in an Apache helicopter and take off with a few buttons pressed on the keyboard, you should be able to drive and gun a tank at the same time.

Highly anticipating this, and Project Reality's upcoming mod. Hopefully will bring more PVP.

Hey ARMA developers, are you paying attention? (Breach destructible environments. Granularity: Shoot out individual bricks).

Hey Breach developers, try adding more than just a single gimmick to the standard rail shooter. :D

I keed. Combine that level of destructibility with the open form of Arma and I would be in heaven.

but thats not really the point of the game. It is suppose to be realistic....All the games before it were the same way.

Think of these games more like simulators and NOT a FPS

Just watched that video. Omg, a biplane?! AWESOME.

Can't wait. I preordered my copy on Newegg. Good price and free 3-day shipping.

Love ArmA2. And BIS is one of, if not the best developer in terms of community support and listening to feedback. They have several devs on the official forums at all times and even have a community issue tracker where you can report bugs, and they will investigate.

EDIT: Oh, and for everyone complaining about performance: True, the game does require a pretty beefy rig, but I can play it at 1920x1200 with max graphics, inlcuding AA and AF at "Very High" and I rarely go below 30 FPS. If you turn down Terrain Detail (one of the biggest hits on performance) you can pull some pretty decent numbers. It takes a bit of tweaking, but with all the awesome mods out there (ACE2 in particular) it's very much worth it if you're looking for a game with a good balance of milsim and FPS fun.

Considering the sheer amount that ArmA2 does versus this game (which basically just looks and sounds like a CoD clone with a cover system) I think BIS has done splendidly.

This is for preorder now I think. $40 for OA ... $50 for both the game and stand alone expansion.

I think as a preorder bonus, you get Bigfoot is a playable character.

I actually enjoyed the arma2 demo, but it ran so poorly I couldn't be bothered to purchase the full game. Hopefully this goes a bit better.

additional special effects (shaking camera, SSAO)
more optimized engine
brand new, more streamlined UI
improved radio chatter
improved vehicle simulation (top-down radar, flares, FLIR)
integrated mod management

The camera shakes a little when you fire weapons, and I find my cursor never lands exactly where it was unlike the previous games, making post-first shot marksmanship more of a skill than a delayed mouse clicking session.

What kind of hardware are those screenies from? I know that the last patch for Arma 2 is an incredible performance boost but it is most certainly NOTHING like those screens. I can hardly wait.

hooah
that Marine uniform was starting to make me feel dirty all over anyway

So, seems like Steam never has the latest patches for this game. Whats the best place to get a copy digitally? Or is physical copy the only real way to stay on top of patches? And are there any announced bundles for Arma 2and this standalone expansion? Im interested.

I disagree. I think it looks like shit and plays like shit. Arma II had the worst attention to detail and fit & finish of any high-profile game I have ever played.

This is available now on Steam for $40, downloading currently @1.2MB/s.

The base game is 15e today on steam. I think I'll wait for a cheap bundle down the road.

I've got it. The controls are slightly more responsive...that's about all I can say about it for now.

The performance is better than Arma 2. I suspect it is because the desert enviroment contains much less grass for the engine to render.

I tested out the Sukhoi SU-25 and posted a brief 1080p video on YouTube.

Performance was really good even at the 2560x1600 resolution I recorded with FRAPS. Recording also knocks of a good 10 fps so don't let any choppiness fool you. It was smooth.

About performance: I have all settings at max except Post-processing as I find having that enabled gives me a unsharp, washed out look.

ArmA2 isn't and never was a "high-profile" game. It's based on a military simulator engine, and that's essentially what it is --- a milsim with some tuning for more "casual" players.

Just got OA on Steam...now all I need is an SLI profile for it.
