Areca 1280ML : OCE question

Hi..
I am going to OCE a 8x1,5TB Raid6 raid-set into a 12x1,5TB Raid6.

Is there a rule for how many disks I can do each time?
I guess, since it's a raid6 I would be ok with doing first to 10 drives and then to 12, but I'm not sure about this.

What do people suggest?
 
There is no limit as to the number of drives that you can add during expansion as far as I know.
 
areca arrays retain their raid level redundancy during oce so it doesn't really matter if you go from 8-10 then 10-12 or straight 8-12.
 
If you haven't stress tested the disks yet I think I would just do it one at a time to be on the safe side. I wouldn't want to be expanding to 8 -> 12 disks and all the sudden three of the new disks fail at once and you getting screwed. If not one at a time I think I would stick to your original plan and do two at a time.
 
Maybe not necessarily stress test (which usually implies multiple full-disk passes and/or multi-day random I/O torture tests) but you should at least do a full surface scan whenever you're about to introduce new disks into an existing array. The idea of doing an OCE in two passes - first to 10 drives then to 12 is silly not to mention extra wear and tear on your existing array member drives. You're not really testing anything with that approach.

Safer and more time-effective is either placing the new disks into passthrough mode and running a surface scan on each with a tool like HDTune, or initialize a new temporary RAID5 array with the 4 new disks, which will have the effect of touching every sector and reporting any bad sectors in the event log. When it completes successfully without errors then delete the temporary raid5 array and add the disks to the preexisting array and do your OCE. Also make note of the SMART stats for each new drive before and after the full surface test, compare and make sure there aren't any significant sector reallocations.
