This article talks about the many ways NVIDIA could end up being dumped by Apple.

Apple has decided to use Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge processors in its MacBook line, a transition that will occur in 2011, squeezing out Nvidia's graphics processors in at least some models of the popular laptops, sources have told CNET.

Good riddance. If NVIDIA is the reason that Apple has been stuck to Core 2 processors, than this will only be a good thing.

Obviously, in a perfect world, NVIDIA and Intel would be friends again and we could get a 13" MBP with a Core i5 and GeForce 540M for $1300.
 
In some models it appears. Lower-end will use Sandy Bridge GMA, and higher end will continue to use AMD's. Looks like nVidia's just going to be in their midrange laptops for the time being.
 
It depends on how well Intel integrates OpenCL into Sandy Bridge. If it's even 1/2 way decent I can see the MBA's and 13" MB/MBP's going to Sandy Bridge.

The only reason it didn't happen the last time around was limited logic board space. Literally not enough room in the box for a discrete card to use OpenCL (which Snow Leopard uses quite a lot), and not enough performance in the Intel GMA's to make it worth much.

It's a change I'd like to see, though depending on timing, it's possible a switch to AMD Fusion is a possibility as well. I could see next-gen MBA's running AMD Fusion boards pretty easily as well.

It's an interesting time to be a Mac user.

Apple likes to sell several year old hardware as "magical" and charge you double of what current hardware sells for.
 
2011 is going to be a slightly interesting PC tech year.... compared to most.

Apple should use every brand possible and not be stuck with one company anyways. They should use whatever is good for customers at a reasonable price.

This is good for Intel though... and isn't Intel based in America? Can't complain there, more $$$ flowing back into our economy.
 
ehm, anyone know AMD fusion will take the lowend with fusion.

Last time I checked, Apple was also using the Core i7 processors. This really has little to do with which generation of processor Apple uses, but more what the processor offers in capability with what Apple wants to provide its customers. If they can get everything on one chip and offer the same services they have been and more compatibility with Snow Leopard, then its a no brainer for Apple.

Definitely doesn't make me want to shell out the ridiculous amounts of money to buy an slightly inferior product imho.
 
Helped a guy just yesterday with a broken Macbook that had a certain Nvidia chip in it so this if it happens is not a day too soon.
 
Wow Apple will be out of the computer business even sooner than I thought.

Sigh, we get it, you don't like Apple. Enough with the hate, especially with a broken record disproven hate.

Some Apple products are overpriced, many are not. Many are very good value when taking all of the things into consideration. It depends on the use of the individual buyer. There isn't a reason to hate just cause it's not what you would buy.
 
Good, another reason for me to NEVER EVER touch an apple product. nVidia rocks! (as does PC)

And secondly buying a decent brand of laptop would help... HP has had the highest defunct rate of all laptops last year. Dell is just crap (horrible hardware quality). I used to sell computers. Lenovo, I am unsure of.

Right, but we're taking about laptops, not desktops. I've had nVidia cards since the Rage3D, TNT, and TNT2 days. My media center has a 210. NVidia makes great desktop cards, but their laptop cards tend to run too hot in various models.
 
Edit for my post above - I'm disregarding your ASUS laptop by the way. The 260 GTX wasn't one of the troubled GPU.

But do you have a laptop from one of the aforementioned companies?

Ive got a dead DV6000. I cant solder for crap so I have a dead laptop that costed me a couple hundred. I like nVidia and all but they should lifetime warranty these things. AGHH anyone in the hampton roads area wanna fix this for me?

I'm not a Apple fanboy, nor a MacHead. I build and OC PC's pretty regularly. I use Mac's for some purposes because there isn't an Windows PC that can compete with it.

Then I submit to you a request.

Find me a laptop that is 15" with a Core i5, a dedicated graphics card, a 1680x1050 screen, 8-9 hours of battery life, good build quality, and is 5.6lbs and less then 1" thick. If you can beat all those in any one computer I'll consider buying it instead of the 15" MBP I'm planning on buying shortly. And if you can do so for under the $1900 that I was planning on spending be even better.

Or do the same with the iMac's. Price out an AIO with bluetooth wireless mouse/keyboard, above-average quality IPS screens (especially the 27.5" screen), Core i3 to i7 screens, and do so at less then the iMac price.

Or the 11.6 MBA. Find me an ultraportable that exists that is close to 2.3lbs, with a C2D (or better!) a dedicated graphics card, and an SSD for $1000. And make sure it gets 5-7 hours battery life.

I'll give you a hint. These things don't exist. But please, the scientist in me LOVES to be proven wrong.

IMO, the build quality of MacBooks is not all that great. I've seen several that had bad hinges and a warped rubber base after a year or two. What purposes is a Mac superior for in comparison to a well-equipped Windows 7 PC?
 
I should add that 8-9 hr battery life is unrealistic for a system with these specs of the one I linked you to, especially with a 7200 rpm HDD. Even his mightiness Steve Jobs is not immune to the laws of physics. However, for an additional couple of hundred bucks you could pick up an SDD (which would nearly double that battery life) and you would still not get even close to Apple's price range.

Some of them do run hot. My old alienware laptop ran super hot runnin a 6600GTX, but the 260 runs nice and cool. But w the alienware it was a desktop replacements, I didn't expect it to run cool.

Honestly, it isn't too hard to find a comparable PC for any mac that isn't half the price for the same thing. Apple bumps the price so high for the little glowy apply on the back of the case. That's all it honestly is.

Easy... Dell's Alienware line. I just customized one with Core i5, 128GB SSD, 1920x1080, Blu-ray, Radeon 5850 for about $1900.

One has to wonder how optimistically that battery is rated as well. My guess is MSI's testing protocol doesn't very accurately replicate typical real-world use.

Your comparing your desktop PC's with far superior cooling and ventilation, that you may have built yourself...to mass produced notebooks, or more specifically Apple notebooks (sorry but a notebook is a notebook regardless of who made it, or what OS it's using)?

I couldn't care either way about this news, the furthest I will delve into Apple territory is the phone.

I like my HP Elitebook 2530p just fine. Core2Duo 2.13GHz, 4GB ram, 230GB drive, Intel GMA 4500MHD, Win7 64-bit Pro, 12.1" screen @ 1280x800, 9 cell battery at 5 to 6 hours.

Cost is a bit high-ish at $1650 when my boss bought it for me, but what the hey, it's not out of my pocket ;-)

Very durable, light, and fast little beast. Not a gamer laptop of course, but I don't game anyways. The 9-cell sticks out the back a little bit, but not overly so.
 
Battery life on OS X vs W7 on my MBP is light and day. I even use the power saver profile and i get 3:40 vs 1:30~. So it maybe just a W7 problem. But generally all apple products have some crazy rated battery life like their iPhone which is still leagues ahead of any android phone in actual usage.
