Not one to knuckle under to public pressure, Apple has refused to reverse its stance on EPEAT. Who am I kidding, it only took a day of bad press to make the company flip-flop. :D

We've recently heard from many loyal Apple customers who were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system. I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT.

Get real, they just didn't want to lose out on the government contracts.

Could it be because of City of San Francisco to stop buying Apple computers???

Ill bet that Apple probably wanted to slum their products to make more money, that's why they removed their EPEAT certifications the first time. Realized they would lose millions and possibly billions from the local and state governments with mandates to remain environmentally responsible.

I agree its beyond annoying at this point. And people defend them until they are blue in the face.

I had a woman threaten to stab me for my anti-Apple comments at a party 5 or 6 years ago.

Apple has been making misstep misstep. Looks like the big giant is vulnerable after all without Sir Steven Jobs at the controls.

Will our hero survive or will he drop into the crushing vault of molten hipsters?
Find out.. on the next Appleball Z!

It was rather silly of them to throw all of their products under the "soldered-in memory, glued-in battery and LCD screen" bus in the first place.

Translation: We paid EPEAT a shitload of cash to lower their standards for us.

Your news post is confusing. They are reversing their stance on EPEAT but you state "Apple has refused to reverse its stance on EPEAT" ?

What?

when I thought about it the other day it seemed unsavory to remove their products from the EPEAT certification.

It's just the sort of thing that would undermine their loyal fan-base. :p

I've lost many a Facebook "friend" over my unwillingness to drink the Apple kool-aid. I even have jobs where the client flat out refuses to accept any editing work done in Adobe Premiere Pro, because it wasn't done on a machine made by Apple or with a program by Apple like FCP or iMovie 10, (AKA Final Cut Pro X).

Apple has done many things ahead of the curve in terms of environmentally conscious computer manufacturing.

They have recently decided they need to glue in their batteries and solder on memory to shave a mm or two off the size of their laptops. This makes them hard to recycle, and fails their new devices on the EPEAT certification.

Apple decided to abandon EPEAT altogether, even though many of their products on the market would still pass the certification. People didn't buy their argument that the certification is outdated, and instead abandoned Apple.

Now it looks like they are going to try and work with EPEAT on the standard itself. Maybe some of their devices fail the recyclability standard but score well on energy efficiency, circuit board chemical content, and manufacturing emissions. Maybe instead of pass/fail, they get a more nuanced certification.

Or maybe Apple just tells everyone they'll recycle their computers themselves.

this comment is even more interesting read in conjunction with our earlier comparison of male vs. female modes of violence and the reasoning for them :)

Wait...I thought they had to drop it because their products were no longer "green". Now they are suddenly back on it? Did they drastically change the design of their products overnight?

Maybe I'm missing something but this seems extremely odd.

... and yet on this site, what I find annoying is the non-stop apple bashing articles. If anyone is blue in the face, it must be Steve. I haven't seen a case of lingering butt-hurt that bad... since ever.

the thing to keep in mind is that the certification board likely benefits as much or possibly even more so than apple by having their products listed. then EPEAT can use Apple as one example of a brand that uses it's certification in order to get smaller companies on board.

Only Apple's 15" MacBook Pro was at issue for it's glued in battery. In the future, possibly more products but no others currently. So it was a strange move for Apple to remove its entire catalog from the EPEAT registry. that is, unless one considers what Apple has been saying: that their production processes and power usage should be considered in the certification process. In that scenario, it's possible removing the products was a move to leverage against EPEAT in order to facilitate measuring some of the advancements Apple has made in production processes and consumption.

reading a few articles where both parties involved are speaking openly about the positives of working together again and EPEAT looking forward to Apple's involvement in evolving the EPEAT standards certainly makes it seem like what I wrote is probable.

Whether or not the standards should be looked at/changed or not, the whole thing sounds like a "Do what we want or I'm taking my toys and going home" kinda thing. Though, in this case, it kinda seems like Apple needs EPEAT more than EPEAT needs Apple.

I'm sure the 60% gain in AAPL share price since Jobs' death is obviously showing how vulnerable Apple really is.

other than the fact that Apple is a founding member of EPEAT

LOL for as much criticism you level at Apple you might want to take a minute one of these days and just do some rudimentary background checking for the basis of your opinions :)

Or, more likely, Apple doesn't give a flying crap what standards they meet other than their own and when someone determined that one of their new "magical" iProducts didn't meet a requirement that all previous products had met, they threw a "magical" tantrum screaming "They don't get to judge me ever again and I'm removing even the VERY HISTORY ITSELF of past judgements" ;)

Then the backlash came in... And the people who work there that are actually concerned with money were like "No, this was a very bad idea, ask the marketing people how to re-spin this shit and warm up the lawyer-mobile so we can ultimately force the standards to conform to our products". :p

If you would have purchased a new MBP like a good consumer, you might have noticed the ninjas entering your home last night to pull out the motherboard and replace it with one that has memory sockets and a removable SSD while modifying the casing to accept a now removable battery.

You think that changes things, but it doesn't.

So really what you're saying is, Apple basically created the standards and now that they don't fit their needs, they want to change them. So, basically, EPEAT is a useless metric then.

From my understanding certain products are no longer "green" like the new MacBooks...iPods, iPads, iPhones, older Macs, etc ARE "green".

So Apple decided to just drop the whole EPEAT thing all together whether the product was certified or not.

I had a woman threaten to stab me for my anti-Apple comments at a party 5 or 6 years ago.

At a family gathering I was at with a laptop an unknown relative came over and sparked conversation by saying his MBP was vastly superior to my laptop and I should get rid of my junk and buy a real laptop. I just told him he was wrong and ignored him. He later came back and wanted me to prove his laptop was not the better laptop, clearly angry... Really angry!

That seems like an odd thing to do overall. But thanks for the explanation.

Apple > EPEAT.

An Open Letter from Robert Frisbee, EPEAT CEO

I am very happy to announce that all of Apple’s previously registered products, and a number of new products, are back on the EPEAT registry. Apple has joined us in addressing these events in a message on their website.

Our relationship with Apple is based on our natural alignment – as Apple drives innovation in product design, EPEAT drives innovation in standards design. EPEAT has pioneered voluntary standards, after-market verification, optional criteria and tiered product certification as ways to keep pace with a fast-paced industry.

We look forward to Apple’s strong and creative thoughts on ongoing standards development. The outcome must reward new directions for both design and sustainability, simultaneously supporting the environment and the market for all manufacturers’ elegant and high-performance products.

An interesting question for EPEAT is how to reward innovations that are not yet envisioned with standards that are fixed at a point in time. Diverse goals, optional points awarded for innovations not yet described, and flexibility within specified parameters to make this happen are all on the table in EPEAT stakeholder discussions. And of course, timely standards development, as with newly created Imaging Equipment and Television standards, and the current refresh of the PC/Display standard, is critical as well.

Answers to these questions support all our subscribers, and lead to mutual benefit for all our purchasers. And they led us to the path to our strengthened relationship with Apple.

The team at EPEAT offers its sincere thanks to the stakeholders whose strong support ensures EPEAT standards and system success, and to Apple for reaffirming their commitment to the EPEAT idea.

i never check if the shit I buy is epeat certified.

do you?

I don't think apple consumers care about anything but having the most shiny gadget with an apple logo on it

This. Product design, OS and applications have absolutely nothing to do with anyone's purchasing decisions.

[rolleyes impied here]

Usually just government agencies, some large corporations & environmentalist wackos who want to pretend they are “green” care about these type of ratings.

I’m sure we will eventually find out that Apple used this episide to pressured them for changes to the ratings, so that the new Apple products will how magically “meet” the updated certification.

Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT

Keyword = eligible

EPEAT requirements hold that electronics must be easy to disassemble, so their components can be recycled

So the new retina macbooks most likely aren't eligible since the batteries are glue to the casing, i'll bet its only the older products that were put back on EPEAT. It would be nice to see a list of the products that were pulled and then put back.

I doubt anyone does. I've noticed it maybe after I've already bought it... and sometimes not until atleast a year later.
