AoC

Pure PvP is all out free for all. Anyone can attack anyone else at any time.

Culture PvP servers takes into account the different races, so you cant attack people the same race as you. You can only attack players rom different regions but you can still party with them and what not.

The griefing is sounding like a big headache. If one does roll on a PvE server, they still have the big siege battles and stuff right? I’m thinking it’s similar to WoW, in that PvE servers still have BG’s, but there is no PvP in the open. Am I right?

That is correct.

Short of the occasional ass, I haven't had much of a problem with people spawn camping or ganking while attacking mobs. It does happen, but I think that that is part of the fun, knowing that you could be attacked at any time. That is why it is best to roll with friends.

I obviously know that dx10 mode doesnt work but does SM3.0 have anything to do with DX10? I have it on dx9 mode and SM3.0 but if SM3.0 isn't doing anything I may as well drop it down.

I think that SM3.0 sitll works, I tried on SM 2.0, looks way worse.

As far as PVP goes, it's very hectic. Seriously, griefers all over the place. I was hoping that it would be some sort of WoW like system, and its not. Basically once you get to white sands and further, it's insane. Anybody can attack anybody. If you are alone and there is a group, they will probably kill you. It would not be so bad, besides the fact that there are barely any respawn points, you end up having have to start from scratch. And with insane respawn times, you will have to fight your way back.

I like PVP, but this is too hectic. I am thinking of making a new guy on PVE server. Just worried that they will fix PVP and I will be on PVE :(.

I'm going to try the culture server ... ffa pvp is fun and all but it might be a bit too hectic especially since I'm a bit casual... but I still want to pvp some..

Well, Funcom didn't really explain much; but I see a ton of frustrated people on my server. Every time I would say something, they reply: "It's a PVP server though...". The thing about that is, no, that's not how it should be. There is simply too much ganking, you can't do anything about it, NOTHING. It took me 2 hours to get to a spot where I needed to kill some crocodiles; just to get ganked again.... It's impossible, sometimes it's fun, but it's not FFA warfare, I want to quest, I want to advance, I do not feel like fighting on a beach until my head is ready to explode.

There are a ton of folk that go invisible and come out as you are ready to fight something, not cool. I am thinking of plain PVE, culture PVP will probably not change much.

SM3.0 doesn't have anything to do with Direct X 10. SM 3.0 does work. Without it the water doesn't look as good and you don't get the bloom effects. However DX10 doesn't work at all. Though it gives you an option for it and stays set if you use it, but it doesn't do anything.

just played a little on a PVE server yesterday. A bunch of my buddies joined a guild and they are one a PVP server. If you always have to roll with 3+ people to even accomplish quest this will seriously suck some of the fun out of the game. Oh well, have 29 more days to see if its worth paying 15 buck a month... (god i never thought i would pay to play)

Doesn't 8pm GMT mean even later in EST? Or maybe I'm thinking of something else, lol.

Thanks Greg. I'm with you. This game is great :) Graphics do look nice, despite some people whining. Character creation is great. I was impressed with it even before I found the "Advanced" tab.

8pm gmt = 2pm est, unless i missed something... are the servers down now? just about to get off work and play.

I dont know if this has been discussed, but what are peoples thoughts on the CE of the game coming with an additional in game item, a ring which gives you higher XP?

Seems a bit lame to me.

Damn, I didn't know about that, oh well, but think of it this way, everyone sooner or later will reach max level.

Was just questing with some guy, quite fun. Got killed few times, killed them. Made little video because I thought that water looked pretty :).

I heard there are some kind of buddy codes that came with the game to let a friend try, is this true? If it is i'd appreciate if someone could hook me up, i really want to try this game but i'm completely broke and I already play WoW

Yes there is a buddy code inside the retail package (5 codes in the CE) - but they are not accessible yet.
(ie funcom said they are waiting a little while for things to "settle down" before they allow guests on the servers)
Probably in 2 weeks or so, depends on server load I guess.

That's their fault for rolling on a PVP server. I've had asses in WoW just stand over my corpse for a long time. If they don't like it, go PVE.

Just wanted to put in my thoughts on the pvp servers. I can only speak for myself, but so far I haven't had all that much trouble with gankers once you get past Tortage. I'm playing on Deathwhisper, which has all of SA's goons as well as a number of top WoW pvp guilds.

I also had the slight advantage of the early access, and was out of Tortage by the time the game went public. Granted, there are times, especially during prime time hours, that you'll get camped on the spawn points occasionally (they still need to work on adding some form of invulnerability when you spawn back)

I found a great way to avoid this. When entering an adventure zone, I usually pick the Epic instance, as almost no one goes there. This lets you pick up all the quests in peace, then you can join back in normal to do the quests.

You also have the option, once in a zone, to change your instance. Playing around 7pm EST, the first adventure zone for Stygians had as many as 6 instances up. The other great thing about this, is you can change instances at will (use the little dropdown arrow to the side of your minimap.)

Getting a bit long winded here, but in general I'm really enjoying playing on a pvp server. It gives you the chance to get revenge on someone if they happen to wrong you (or if you're just bored!). The other thing I like about being in a pvp server is that you can have people kill you, and you'll be able to choose where you want to spawn back in the zone, without having to worry about rez sickness from dying to a mob. A lot of times I'll just pick a fight with someone and let them kill me, so I can get around faster.

For reference, I'm playing a Herald of Xotli, currently level 31 and am having a blast. They're about as much of a glass cannon as I've ever seen (even moreso than the Assassin in my opinion.) If anyone is playing on Deathwhisper send me a tell and we'll do something! Name is Quetzalcoatl.

I am back. Odd to see my thread has grown this large. I must say, if you're on the fence about this game, get it! It is quite amazing. There are a few flaws, and they are very minimal. The game is rather entertaining. It hasn't lost its luster since the first minute of playing. I am rather attached already. I am playing a barbarian on the bluesteel server. If anyone wants to buddy up, I also have a vent server I got for me and my buddy, and more are welcome to utilize it. Please PM me for details. Also, if you play on bluesteel feel free to post your char's name here so we can get some groups going on. Did a little PVP with my friend and it was hella fun. He started just today so he is about 6 levels lower then me. He sits around and waits for someone to attack and then I pop out of stealth and then its lights out! In all seriousness though, this game is a fresh breath of air. It takes some key elements and adds a new dimension, and it is all quite entertaining. Each portion of the game seems to be rather balanced. (Leveling, questing, pvp, pve, etc.) Bluesteel is a pvp server but the people seem to be rather nice. I have only ran into a few people that have repeatedly killed me. Outside of that, amazing! So I hope to see you all there!

Edit: Sorry, I felt as if I needed to elaborate a bit more after reading through a few posts. As far as this game being similar to other MMO's (WoW, EQ, etc.) it isn't quite the same. Its an entirely different beast. With that being said, it does indeed take the GOOD core elements of these games, and adds a very nice element to it all. The combat system is great. Unlocking new combos is absolutely exciting. Witnessing the new animations and the insane amount of blood spurts everywhere is just awesome! Not to mention the sheer feeling of greatness when you unleash a pile of damage on a creature, or another character, and on top of that, you may even have a chance to carry out a nasty fatality. (See: sword in the chest, laugh in your face =D)

As far as performance goes, the game runs rather smooth. The physics some times can feel a bit janky (like while swimming underwater) but overall, for just being released - it is quite the performer. Not to mention it looks good. I can imagine any other kinks to be ironed out in the near future. the developers seem to be rather prompt when fixing things it seems.

As far as PVP goes, it seems great. I haven't had any real problems. Killed a few times, nothing major. I usually do not attack anyone until they attack me. The plus side, if you manage to build any type of a friend network, and communicate via vent, it can become rather entertaining when someone swings their sword in the wrong direction. (see: me and my friends blow you to smitherines mistar!)

Conclusion:
I am not sure about you, but if you're anything like me you will enjoy this game to the extreme. I'll give you an idea of how excited this game makes me. I have very very fond memories of several games, especially playing them for the first time. Lets just say, that first time you fired up Tribes and just sat there in awe while firing the mortar gun, the first time you fired up Counter-Strike and watched on as you blasted people in glee with the M3, the first time you sat in anticipation while playing Everquest, not really knowing what the hell you were doing, and were not exactly sure what an "MMO" was all about but enjoying it nonetheless, the first few experiences of WoW -add all of those good memories up, and then, just then you may have the feeling you get when first playing AoC, and progressing on thereafter.

So I hope this gives you a good idea of what you will be getting into. Those of you that are married, good luck. :d

Cheers,
keefer

I'm also loving the game. I rolled a priest of Mitra and am now level 17. Leveling has been easy and efficient so far, much more so than in WoW. The priest can spec into uninterruptable spells, pretty much every offensive spell has an AoE component, and the talents actually make sense. Improved mana regen? Increased movement speed? Spell uninterruptability? New spells at the top of a tree? I'm sure there are some duds in there, but there seems to be much more thought in it than WoW.

I am myself having a blast now also, I have got to a rough start, but game has been fun. Yes, you do get owned on PVP server sometimes, but there are always lower players to take revenge on :).

I think that there are few things that could be improved, ie tree quality, but besides that, I like it a ton!

I just got the game tonight and played for a couple hours. Graphics look ancient on max settings, movement and combat feels extremely clunky and stiff, it seems to lack the polish and fluidity that WoW has. Gonna grind it out to 20 and see if the game grows on me, I usually don't give most games a chance since I'm spoiled by Valve and Blizzard games where it's easy to get into when you fire it up for the first time. Hopefully it gets a lot better once I acquire more skills and get a taste of PvP cause I'm getting tired of TF2 and DoTA :)

Glad you came around to it, aFive. The game really does improve a lot post-Tortage, so anyone that's not quite feeling it before the single player, I think will start appreciating it more.

As far as the trees go, I honestly hadn't noticed they were sprites until I read this thread, and I even picked Woodcutting as one of my trades! :p At work right now, so as soon as I get home, I'll take a look. Either way it doesnt really bother me that much. It could also be that playing in Stygian lands have only sand and more sand to look at. Trees are few and far between.

The other points you've brought up previously do still need worked on in my opinion, however; I think most everyone is agreeing with that right now.

First, the chat system is very clunky and needs some polish. Adding friends isnt very intuitive (can either do /cc addbuddy name or through the player tab.)

Second, clipping in the world still needs a lot of work. There are times when you'll be walking along a nice, pleasant rolling hill and get stuck on it. Along with this, the whole leg crippling thing needs taken out of the game. Basically, if you fall more than 8-9 feet, your run speed gets cut to 50% for 5 seconds and you take some crazy damage (although this is hilarious on pvp servers when someone is running away from you and falls.)

Third, as I mentioned before.. the whole thing with having no invulnerability when you rez from deaths is a pain sometimes. As I said before though, it clears up once you get away from the griefers.

PvP balancing is in question right now, in my opinion. I've heard from some close beta testers that they did most of the balancing in the end game and all the glaring differences you see early on will not be as prevalent at 80.

Can't think of anything else right now. The point is: yes, there are flaws. Just about every MMO that releases has them. I'm quite impressed with how smooth the release has been, however. From what I've played, there are no game breaking bugs or flaws right now.

Give me a shout later on, Im heading to Mexico for the weekend but I am going to plow through the lvls when I get back.
Look for Langly!!!

Hey all, i picked up AoC and have been giving it a try. I'll start by saying I am a long time MMO player. I played EQ for about 7 years, beta tested WoW, played DAOC for a brief bit, and my WoW char was created day 1 of WoW's launch and i've played him ever since. I enjoy WoW a lot but recently its become a drag.

So far i have really been enjoying AoC. I had some doubts about graphics and stuff and still am experiencing a bit of problems with my system listed in my sig. I'm running on a 42'' Westy monitor despite the listed 37'' although they use the same resolution. With that said i'm running on the "Medium" setting. It seems like when you first initially load the game and start playing your first 15 min are a bit sluggish and after that there is the occasional stutter when i look too quickly in a direction or sprint off really fast or something but in combat and general play are completely unaffected. The water in the game is pretty awesome too. The tree's don't bother me all that much.

I played way too long last night and ended up getting my Assassin to lvl 12 (ALMOST 13 DAMNIT!). I'm on a PVP server and i've only had 1 frustrating run in with a spawn camp so far. What i ended up doing to get away was watch and wait for someone else to spawn before i hit RELEASE and i was hoping they would distract him long enough. Worked pretty easily. Since that guy didn't lvl a whole lot i came back about an hour later and cleaned him out.

I really like the look of a lot of the feats i've seen so far. It was REALLY hard for me to decide what class to pick! It seemed like every single class had something to offer and was different from the rest. Every time i looked at one classes feat tree and looked at the top abilities i wanted to play that class. took me forever to decide on an assassin!

Anyone notice any classes in particular that arn't being played much so far?

This game is giving me the worst case of "i dont know what class to play" ive ever had. I usually go with casters or range characters, but the melee combat i nthis game is really fun. I think im going to try out a Bear Shaman tonight...

cripes i gotta get it this weekend, hopefully my core 2 duo with 2 gigs of ram and a ATI 1550 can at least run it at 1024x768 with medium settings.

Forgot..UK bank holiday monday, day off work, 3 day weekend to power level in AoC.

I've seen alot of Assassins/Rangers/Barbs. An quite a few casters/tanks.

I've seen 1 other priest of mitra in game, and 1 bear shaman. I'm level 14 on bloodspire.

My guys name is Painolympics, so hit me up if you're interested.

Anyone know when you pick up professions, and how you unlearn feats?

I am playing a Guardian right now, however I found it really interesting that each culture only has one Priest class available. Is the PVE content balanced around not having many healers?

I am used to work with 5 man groups tank/healer/dps+cc/dps+cc/other and raids with 7 to 10 healers.

Least popular classes (according to the poll on the official forums -- which has over 9000 votes)... looks like

Demonologist, Necro, Bear Shaman, and Herald of Xotli are the least played.

I'm playing the Herald of Xotli (HoX) now on Tyranny. Name is Illtox, send me a tell :) Definitely a glass cannon. Still managed to get to lvl 15 last night.

I played a priest in wow before I quit, and usually enjoy the class more then any.

At least at level 14 though, the heals are pretty weaksauce, you get a renew and a regrowth like spell, I take it you've played wow, so these are the only direct comparisons i can give you. The regrowth-like spell is ~0.5 second cast and the renew is a 1.5 second. Unlike wow, these apply to your entire group when you cast them. They are also on cooldowns. (3-6 seconds).

The class seems to have more defensive manuevers thus far rather then straight healing. At ten you get a move called repulse and it freaking destroys. Its like a 2.5 second cast, does aoe damage, does an AOE knockback and stun.

Me and a ranger were up against assassin/barb and another melee, and we wrecked them. they were level 11/12 and i was 13 he was 12. Mainly because they all used the old wow "zerg the healer" tactic. I think if they would have went for the ranger we would have lost as my heals aren't that good. I really hope the heals get better by level 20, but thusfar im enjoying it even if the heals aren't that powerful yet.

Yeah, AoC has no true HEALER class. :(

Bear shaman are unpopular because they SUCK until about 25 or 26. then they are one of the most balanced and powerful classes out there.

umm....did you even look at the water......? Water

Yea the water's nice but I tend to pay more attention to character movement and combat animations especially in a game that emphasizes its unique combat system. Looks like my guy runs around with a stick up his arse and swings his arms like they're made of Jello. I'm still gonna grind out the first month since some people are mentioning that the game really picks up after you leave the starting area. If the PvP is good then all is forgiven :p

While we're on the AoC topic - I am at work. Does anyone know of any good AoC fan sites? (Outside of what Google may dig up)
