I'm wondering with the last 5 BIOS patches if that improves anything? My only option to upgrade would be the 14900k. Since buying the 285K would be kinda silly for me anyway.
 
What cpu are you on now? All of the 13xxx and 14xxx chips got a 2 year warranty extension to 5 years total. If you're on 13xxx, going 14th gen is pointless. Apply the fixes and enjoy, if it dies rma it.
 
Mine's been good for exactly 14 months today, although I had it capped at 253w since before the self-immolation issues were first reported. I'm not worried about it, will be looking to upgrade by 2028 I'm sure.
 
I have a 14900K in my racing sim pc and it's never given me any issues and has shown no indications of any degradation so far. I've had it for about a year now with power limits set to 253W and undervolted from day one.
 
Anyone with a little PC knowledge capped the VID or PL day 1 and has had no problems. It was fairly obvious to anyone in the know that shoving 1.6V+ into a CPU for single core boosting was excessive. Too bad Intel did it anyways.

This my approach. I have a 13700k and 14700K and have the latest bios running both with no issues. Both are fairly new and are used sparingly.
 
I have a casual PC gaming buddy who has been running one sans issues for about a year. At least once I showed him how to turn off all of the bloatware for his Razer accessories. BIOS was mostly set to defaults with XMP enabled and he was playing new games. His crashdumps folder was clean minus GOG crashes that almost everyone gets.
 
Not quite the answer to your question but I have a 13900K which I've had for over 2 years, it's happy and fine, though I did impose Intel's 253w limit on it from the time I got it. It's been a very stable system, I haven't seen any of the game crashing people have reported, despite playing lots of UE4 games (Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, etc) and the system itself hasn't BSOD'd at all that I can recall. Because of my experience I was highly skeptical of people reporting issues in the early days of the 13th/14th gen CPU thing, I figured they must be pushing the OC too hard or something because mine running at stock limits was so stable. It has continued to be stable since all the latest BIOS updates, which I tend to apply as soon as they come out.

I also have a 14900HX in my laptop which hasn't had any issues. Now granted, they said laptop CPUs weren't affected so I don't know how useful a datapoint it is, but it is a 14th gen and it does work happy for the time I've had it.

The i5 13600K/14600K will be safer than the i7's and i9's since the default voltages don't go over 1.35V's. Someone would have to aggressively overclock to degrade it, but it's pretty silly since default voltage overclocks can get 5.4GHz all-core, with 5.7GHz 2-core.

Thanks, but I'm looking to go with a top end CPU - I'd be OK with a 14900k if there was a way to undervolt it with minimal performance loss and longevity in mind. I'd actually prefer it since heat is a major issue in my office and I recently tweaked my 3090/11900k to ease up a bit.

You could undervolt it, but you'd have to tweak the frequencies lower. You could also just get a 14900T if you wanted lower power draw and temps, and not have to worry about undervolting and tweaking, as it's a 35W TDP CPU. You lose about 50% performance over the 14900K, though.

Yeah, not appealing for a high end gaming rig.

Weirdly tempted to get a 12900k since I could use a z790 board and DDR5 - could hand it down to a kid in a couple years.

This whole thing is fraught with issues - the best CPUs have reliability issues, the newest CPUs have performance issues and availability issues.

Might just go buy a new carry piece for summer...
 
I got an open box, clearly used 14900K at Micro Center for like $345, because I clearly don't mind rolling the dice with MC's return policy.

Went straight into a W680-ACE board with the latest microcode already installed, and I'm not noticing any signs of instability even under stress testing. If anyone's got a better idea than passing half an hour of Cinebench or running certain game benchmarks (MH Wilds being the most recent) and still not getting so much as one WHEA error, I'm all ears.

All in all, I don't really regret it, even if the incentive was more to move my 12700K back to the Z690 board I took out of my main build so my bro has something better to use than an old 7700K or an 11900, while still retaining high clock speeds because W680 doesn't permit CPU overclocking (and overclocking Raptor Lake has already proven to be a stupid idea with how these things are pushed to their limits from the factory).

Load up a game that compiles shaders at the start. Apparently UE5 games are notoriously famous for sussing out 13th/14th gen instability. It's not a definitive test, but if it crashes during the compile it's a dead giveaway that the CPU has already degraded.

Looks like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 decided to compile shaders again, even though I already gave it a test run with the 12700K beforehand - but the compile time seemed noticeably shorter than what I remembered.

The 14900K did it just fine, even started the game proper afterward with no crashes. That's a good sign.

There was a updated Bios 1820 for Asus MBs a few months ago. Kid I work was getting crashes all the time with his 14900K until I told him to update the Bios I'm sure he's on 1820.
His system has been crash free since then. I just updated from 1802 from Oct. last year to 1825 which just came out. Seems to be working good I didn't get a crash in Atomfall with higher settings enabled. There were some people having problems with Windows verification on Reddit but I didn't see anything like that I still have TMP secure boot disabled.

Same here. I locked all the cores at x55 (no more two cores boosting) and for undervolt. I used AC_LL/DC_LL to control UV. I set AC_LL at 0.12 and DC_LL 0.98 (to closer CPU VIDs for reading) with LLC4 mode, ICCMAX 375A, PL1/PL2 set to 253W, 88C temp limit , and IA VR at 1.450v and I also never updated my BIOS to latest BIOS. ASUS Strix Z690 D4 WIFI mobo with a 13900K.

My 13700K has problems it crashes games all the time now so I put my 12700K back in the CPU would freak out and start spinning the CPU fan at very undemanding tasks.
I put my 12700k tested Borderlands 4 and Atomfall along with Chronos I can live with it for a while. Temps are in the 50s 60s highs 75s.

You got to lock those cores down and tune the voltage manually

Also by the way, I didn't tuned my cpu properly when I got it new and used it for a like one year and a half or something until I forced myself to learn how to tune it included tuning ram as well by learning stuff from OCN and some info on my research. But my CPU is still doing fine so far.

You probably could replace your CPU with a new 14900K and then tune it properly. But it's up to you. 285K isn't exactly a bad cpu to buy only if you know how to tune it especially with D2D clock and it works better when you tune the RAM to OC. But I know tuning isn't for everyone. If you have time and patience to tune it.
 
I just got a 14900k myself and everything runs fine for me. I also bought a CPU cooler that explicitly stated that it could handle a TDP over 250w (it says 280w).

It's an uphere 8-pipe cooler. My CPU idles around 30-32c and pegged (using stress --cpu 32 on linux) it seems to stop around 85c or thereabouts when running about 5 minutes or less.

I also got a thermalright cpu bracket to replace the factory CPU retention mechanism. I saw how uneven the paste pressure was from the various videos online and figured that was a good thing to get. I also have like ten 120mm fans in my case. Also having experience building servers I knew heatsink pressure makes a difference so I figured it was worth the cheap insurance.

edit: I also got a metal back plate instead of the provided plastic one.

From what I read cooler mounting pressure and general rigidity seem to be the big problem with this platform

I put a new 14900kf into my system (August 2025) with fully updated bios v7D30v1N with all Intel microcode release to date.

So this cpu has only known the updated environment.

Microcode 0x129
Microcode update 0x129 addresses an issue where the processor may request high voltages, potentially leading to accelerated degradation.

Microcode 0x12B
Microcode update 0x12B addresses elevated voltage requests by the processor during idle and/or light activity periods (includes 0x129).

Microcode 0x12F
Microcode update 0x12F to further address processor degradation on systems with light activity.

So far so good.. it's only been about 3 months though - but this thing runs cool (idle low 30s, gaming low 50s, never seen higher than 82c) and very fast vs my 13700kf. Those 14th gen cores and the extra clock speed, definitely feel that while compiling shaders in games, and just overall game performance.

EDIT: Jan 2026 update. still very happy with this cpu... the idle temps are 32c ....gaming in the low 50s .... 82c during stress testing (room at 21c). no changes to bios.

Ya 13900KS best CPU I've ever owned love it
Undervolted -0.065mv generally keep it at 5.3/4.3 at about 1.2v to 1.25v average voltage 24 physical cores on but hyperthreading off. Have had 17 bios updates on my Aorus Master Z790 but I've tuned the CPU since day one. No need to Overclock the CPU because it easily hits 144fps in all the lastest and greatest games I play. The system is balanced for 4K 144hz and enjoying the heck out of it.

I am also running RPL i9 (13900KF) without bios updates and it is running fine.

The one slight difference between my situation and your "I run stock" situation is that you are killing your CPU while mine runs at 1.25V so like .25 to .35 less than unsafe voltages.
In other words my CPU is running well within any of Intel's recommendation for maximum voltage for any of their CPU while your is spiking to voltages which are known to kill the very CPU you are running.

If you do get RPL it is best to just use fixed voltages with fixed clocks.
You will loose a bit of maximum turbo boost multiplier but if you play your OC right you can actually get better multipliers with sustained few-P-core loads.
I would also recommend disabling Hyper Threading. It is detrimental for gaming and especially for mixed gaming + productivity workloads. CPU runs much quieter without HT. The same clocks need less voltage to get stable => even quieter operation.
 
I disabled HT with either my 12700k or 13700k and Stalker the game was a slide show so I just have svid behavior on Typical.
That doesn't seem to affect fps much. I had to do something about Temps they were totally out of control during summer. My 13700k would crash with almost any game it didn't even matter what the temps were. I do own a 13700KF which I got for Free due to delayed shipped way back when. Pretty sure my 13700k is cooked. I might install the 13700kf later today my problem I think was using a bad bios for a long period of time.

I've been using my current rig for 2 years now without any problems. Kept everything stock except xmp. Haven't even updated bios yet either the whole.
I'm kinda different since I chose the newer z790 board with a 13700k at the time of the build, so maybe that fixed alot of the problems experienced by some guys.
 
I would not recommend using RPL i9's at stock setting at all even with bios patches and especially without them.
i5 should be safe either way - even worst situations where mobo overvoltages CPU are still well within safe margins. On these CPUs you can overclock while undervolting getting massive gains in efficiency and fan noise so not OCing is such a waste.
i7 is where risks start. Less so 13700K than 14700K but still.

Safest is to just target all-P-core OC. Push MHz as much as possible at v-core which cooler can dissipate and keep it like that. This will by itself limit voltage to very safe levels.
This how I use my Core i9 and I didn't bother updating firmware. Also not using HT. Don't like HT. Not having to loose performance from disabling HT/SMT is good reason to get Arrow Lake - if only it was available on LGA1700 I would go for it.
 
Picked up a 14700k from Best Buy last me until Nova Lake. Says chip is made in Israel assembled in Vietnam. There was something wrong with both my 13700k crashes and 13700kf caused weird eyestrain. So I pray this chip works tomorrow when I plug it in after work.

It's a keeper so far I got it up to 74c in Intel XTU for 2 minutes see what happens in Summertime I might have to put my Noctua G2 back on. I have my Noctua U12A now cooling it.
I can't believe all the Cores I have now 28!!!! Nova Lake is going to be Insane with 52 cores. No weird eyestrain like with my launch 13700KF which I got free from Amazon basically at launch because Amazon lost my 13700K. So if you look for a chip made in Israel or IL it's a good chip.

I do have SVID Behavior in Ai-Tweaker on ASUS on Typical that makes all the difference with these chips.
Your stock voltage is already too high (for me) keep it under 1.3v to be really safe from any degredation.

Just look around. I typically recommend SkatterBencher, since they're extreme overclockers that blog their overclock settings. Depending on your motherboard manufacturer (ASUS, AsRock, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.), overclock settings will be named slightly different. Also, be reasonable with your overclocks and voltages, those skatterbenches are typically going for the highest overclocks, not 24/7 stability and longevity.
 
I can't wait to play some games on this I tried Superpostion Benchmark highest score I ever got almost 50K the ecores help with 1% lows
Port Royal was slightly higher but only 22286 score more but it all depends on Nvidia drivers. What had me worried was Crimson Desert a game I have no intrest
to even playing listed Raptor Lake 13700K as a recommened CPU. Also when I switched from 13700K back to 12700K I was getting alot less FPS in Borderlands 4.
To a point where I could notice while in game.
