Anyone regret going i7?

I'm thinking about upgrading to an i7 920 over a q9x50 chip. It's going to cost me more because of new memory and a new mobo. Anyone regretting the i7 move?
 
no, not me.

It won't cost too much more if you really want i7. Now you can get i7 920 (MC, 229)+ X58(UD3R, 175)+6gb ddr3 (45, tigerdirect)=$450. It's comparable to an q9650 system in terms of cost.

But then again, I took a pretty big jump from an Athlon X2 4200 939 system. My guess is that you would be in for some slight disappointment if you went from a q9xxx to an i7 without OCing it nor using it for video conversion, photoshop, or modeling.
 
Not regretting it at all. In fact, I've never been quite as happy with a CPU as I am with this one. Don't put yourself in the position of buying a Q9xxx and having to regret that instead. I think you'll regret undercutting yourself like that far more then you will for getting the 920.

There is no comparison. Core i7 outclasses Core 2 Quad, as it rightfully should. Buying anything less when you have the chance to get one is far more of a reason for regret then doing yourself the favor of getting it would be.

I think the OP will be EXTREMELY hard pressed to get anybody to honestly say they regret buying an i7 920. The word "honestly" is the key phrase here.
 
The 920 exceeded my expectations. I was on the fence as well. I had a good 775 board DDR2 RAM but made the jump anyway.
 
I am perfectly happy with my i7 and I upgraded from a Q9550. I love it and it's much faster for conversion and other CPU happy things like that.
I'm would have been happy with this upgrade JUST for SLi on Intel chipsets actually but this CPU is so much more of an upgrade than my Q6600 to Q9550 was it's not even funny.
 
This is one of the best investments I've ever made. I came from an Athlon64 3500+ / 2GB / GeForce6800GT to a Core i7 920 / 6GB / GTX260. I dont think I will need to upgrade for a long long time. :)
 
Absolutely do not regret it, but now I know I would have regretted staying with AMD, which I have for almost 10 yrs now.
 
Im running a 965 and (for now) 6gb of ram and I am soo impressed with this machine. I mainly use it for photoshop and lightroom and it is so fast its not even funny.
 
no regrets, if you are upgrading now, then you gotta go i7, if you can wait then wait, but don't upgrade to a Q9X now just to upgrade again in 6 months
 
I'd wait for the next release. You have a gtx260 so you're not really cpu limited. I7 really shines when it comes to multi GPU configs. Hence I'm waiting on the next update before I go i7.
 
I read a report today that the 920 and 940 chips have their memory speed unlocked.
Can anyone confirm?
 
I am already nearing kicking myself for not going i7 over c2q three months ago, but as I moved up from a socket 939 system the c2q was already a gigantic upgrade. I was on a pretty tight budget, and picked up a q9450/8gb/rampage formula for ~$400 shipped and I think at the time the cheapest i7 build I could get was like ~$700.

I don't think push my PC nearly hard enough to enjoy the benefits of i7, as I do feel any limitations at the moment (except Crysis :p) However I am sure when I see the 920/6gb/mobo for ~$450-500 I will cry a little inside.

I think with the prices right now even, it would be silly to stick with c2q unless you are picking it up used through FS/FT as I did.
 
You can sell your current kit and get i7 and be quids in compared to 3 months ago!

Far be it for me to wish to make you cry, even just a little on the inside, but if you live near a Microcenter, the prices for the combo already is well below 500 bucks. 230 for the i7 920, 175 for a Zotac X58 mobo from Newegg, and 75 for 6Gb of ram. BUT, my mistrust of the Zotac board makes me think your Q9450+Asus board is still preferable to that combo. If you don't mind going to around 500 bucks though, the same combo but with the Gigabyte UD3R is killer bang for the buck and trustworthy.
 
Never will regret it. Went from a Q6600 to the 920 and I'm set for the long haul. Westmere sounds interesting and will be on the 1366 platform so I'll look at that when it hits.

First intel system ever.

had it running to 4 gig in a few hours. not 100% stable. she seems happy @ 3.9. after two days 15hrs of prime stable.

Time to enjoy the rig now. will try again for 4.0 when i get the itch.
 
I went from a 939 Athlon X2 4800 to Core i7 920... yeah, not regretting the move.

Also my first Intel build.

The only scenario I can see causing somebody to regret getting a 920 is if they spent their mortgage money to get it. Losing ones home could be a cuase for regret. Almost any reason short of that, I cannot see regretting getting a 920.

is it REALLY that much faster? I went from a q6600 that was @ 3.6 to a q9550 C1 which will only hit 3.84 and I saw a pretty good performance increase.

What were you running the q9550 at and what are you running the i7 at? Did you JUST upgrade mobo/cpu/ram or did you build a whole new rig? (just curious if the performance increase is direct clock/clock related and/or if it is all directly related to even the chip itself)

How about if you were running at q9650 @ 4.0-4.5ghz and spent all that money to gain 1-2fps in games? I know I would regret that ;).

If you got a q anything that fast you'd be silly to upgrade without knowing it will be of benefit.
Heck, I've got a C2D @ 4.1GHz (+GTX260) and I dont see the need to upgrade :)

I wouldn't regret that either. Considering several RTS and simulator gaming scenarios I play kill all Core 2 chips, Core i7 has been a heaven sent blessing. I'm not one of those "first person shooters are the only games that exist" kinda guys who won't gain much. If you upgraded from a 4Ghz Core 2 Q9xxx to a 4Ghz i7 for first person shooters only, you DESERVE to be regretful. That person would have ignored that no CPU can help out a game that is almost purely GPU limited.
 
FPS are nice but video encodes make it worthwhile and the socket has a better future than 775 does at this point.
 
Going i7 was definetly worth it for me.

Got the motherboard for $230, processor for $230 and 12GB of DDR3 1600 for $200.

660 bucks for the core components that will last you for a couple of years easily, not counting future CPU upgrades when westmere comes out. I'd say that's a hella good deal.

And I'm glad you have the brain cells to know that. Unfortunately a lot of these people who claim to be seeing "huge performance gains and love their new processor" are of the FPS gaming generation and are completely full of crap :D. (which is what I was getting at in the first place)
 
@crawlgsx: I'm in the same boat as moshpit and I do a TON of video encoding and run a couple of VMs so it works for me. It didn't do shit for me in my FPS games (except Crysis but I think there's a glitch there somewhere). I upgraded just CPU, Mobo, RAM.
