Antec P180

I just finished moving my fileserver hardware into the p180 case. It is almost completely silent. I must say that I am very impressed. Minus a few irritating things abuot the interior space for wiring it is just about the best case I have owned thus far.

Too bad it is too small a case to house my PC. I do like the look of it. I am sure the quality is everything Antec usually puts out.
Too small? It is pretty tall at over 21".

Maybe he means for watercooling?

I mean, it's got 6 HD bays (+1 if you put on in the floppy bay I bet) and 5 5.25" bays, that's huge. You could put one of those CoolerMaster Stacker drive bays into 3 of the 5.25" bays and with the 1 in the floppy bay have 11 HDs in it.

I'll have one by Quakecon! Dare me!
Hopefully full of blank hard drives to fill up! :)

Look at his sig, he has one massive motherboard, which the P180 is too small to accomodate. Or you could read back into the thread where he said exactly the same thing.

On a side note, I sent an email to techonweb asking if they knew an eta on my back order and they simply said "We have been given no ETA from the manufacturer". I want my case now!! (even if I haven't ordered any other components for my computer yet hehe)

Can anyone with a P180 comment on how good the rubber grommets are at reducing the seak noise of a hard drive (I'm thinking WD Raptor)?

Also, how good/quiet are the supplied case fans?

I talked to techonweb and the person I spoke with said that they are showing the end of June for availability.

Anyone know where they are in stock in the US? I looked at zipzoomfly, but they are now OOS.

Thanks,
CJ

Just ordered one from www.shopblt.com for $128.01 + shipping. They still have 46 left in stock. They also have a great reseller rating.

The rubber grommets are working really well for me. I've got a 74gig raptor and two pata WD drives in the bottom bay and I can hardly hear them. The raptor is the OS drive. The fans are each controlled by a switch physically attatched to the fan. On Low and Medium you can barely hear them, on High they are screaming.

The rubber grommets are great. I can barely even hear my Raptor when defragging.

I cannot hear my drives at all, I can't believe how well that silicon works! My case is so freaking silent now, its unbelivable! Moving my shit into it took me awhile but by far the most ANNOYING PART of this case has to be the gawdawful PSU wiring. I"ve never cussed so much in my life trying to get cables through, twisted, bent and all over the place to where I needed them to go. Definently requires patience compared to regular ATX, thats for sure.

Here are some pics of my final setup, I'm doing tempature testing right now.
I replaced all the fans with Coolermaster UV fans.

OMG, I know. It was a huge pain in the ass. First I had to bring all the wires in through the hole, and then try to pull them through with one hand while literally cramming the PSU in with the other.
I was tryin' to figure out how to take that bottom fan out. Looks like it just slides out, but mine wouldn't budge.

how long is the top vent? i want to stick a radiator/heater core there but i'm not sure how much space there is. it actually looks larger than a single 120mm can someone confirm this. maybe i can squeeze a double heatercore there.

It will be VERY ugly to get a radiator attached due to the 3 layer design of the case. You'll be cutting through alot of stuff. Im beginning to think this isn't a water coolers case to be honest, then again, it never wasn't meant to be.

i think you misunderstand me. i definitely do not want to dremel the case. But I want to stick a radiator/heater core underneath the "spoiler" or top vent.

Can some take a picture or give me some measurements of the top vent in relation to the 120mm fan.

I got mine yesterday from www.frontierpc.com. I had initially preordered the black SPCR version (simply because they said it would arrive first) but switched my order when I heard the silver was on it's way.

Here's my review from the frontierpc forums:

Just got mine yesterday and loaded it up with parts. I must say, this is the best designed case I have owned, vs other antec and lian-li boxes. It's a bit heavy compared to a pure aluminum case, but I've never seen a case that felt as solidly built.

The included fans are really quiet (Zalman 7700 cooler on minimum speed makes more noise) and the thick side panels really do cut out a lot of noise.

Wire routing can be a bit tricky as the PSU is at the bottom of the chassis. My abit motherboard has it's 4-pin connector at the very top left of the board and the wire on my antec psu just barely reaches it, running directly overtop of the motherboard.

The video air duct is completely useless on my board as well, as the VGA PCI-E port is lined up with the 4th slot cover from the top, whereas the duct is pointed at where an AGP card would sit. It would make for a killer northbridge cooler though :p

I would recommend picking up an extra 120mm fan to mount at the front of the case, as the antec tricool exhaust fans don't have too much grunt at low speed and because of the quiet design + filter there's a fair bit of air blockage up front.

One thing I have seen a lot of people worried about is the use of a PSU with a bottom intake fan in this case. I'm looking at it right now, and I'd say there's a little more than an inch of space below the power supply after it is mounted, which would give more than enough room for an air intake. I'm using a Phantom 350, and there's about 2cm of clearance between the PSU wires and the 120mm fan guard, although the cables could be flattened a bit more. I'd say the absolute max PSU depth would be 1 inch more than the phantom 350.

It does look like you could remove the fan and place it on the other side of the metal support, though, if you do need more depth.

All in all I'm very happy with this case. There are no scratches or blemishes whatsoever and it works just as well as I hoped it would.

Now, to answer some questions:

"Can anyone with a P180 comment on how good the rubber grommets are at reducing the seak noise of a hard drive (I'm thinking WD Raptor)?

Also, how good/quiet are the supplied case fans?"

The rubber grommets are actually really soft, and they do a pretty decent job. I'm installing drive enclosures later today, though. The included fans are quite good...the "low" setting is quieter than a zalman cpu cooler (as I said above) and the "high" setting is pushes quite a bit of air. Way too loud for me though.

" i think you misunderstand me. i definitely do not want to dremel the case. But I want to stick a radiator/heater core underneath the "spoiler" or top vent.

Can some take a picture or give me some measurements of the top vent in relation to the 120mm fan."

The top fan hole is hexagonal in shape, and has exactly the same diameter as the bladed area of the fan. The rear end of the fan is secured with screws in the standard fashion, whereas the front slides into small brackets. If you were going to put a rad on the inside of the case, you would have to drill 2 screw holes for the front side as the little metal tabs would not work to support it, unless you would be mounting the rad directly to the fan (so the fan is pulling air through the rad and then out the grille).

Same problem for mounting the rad externally...there is no second set of screw holes, so you'd have to drill. Just for total clarity I should point out that there is no way you could fit anything *underneath* the spoiler but outside the case, although I'm pretty sure that's not what you ment.

Really the best idea would be to mount your rad on the rear exhaust fan or even the front intake fan (you'd need to remove the middle HD rack, but keep in mind that dumping the heat into the case isn't such a big deal here considering the dual 120mm exhaust and the fact that the PSU is using a completely seperate air supply).

Personally, I havn't run a watercooled system for years but after staring at this case's layout last night, I started reading reviews of the newest WC hardware. I think this case is *perfect* for a basic WC setup that doesn't involve case modification.

There's 4 120mm fans, all of which you could manage to place a radiator on, a small seperate bay area in the bottom corner which is ideal for mounting even a large pump like an ehiem, plus tons of semi-secluded space above that if you remove the other HD rack. All you have to do would be put your HD's in the 5-inch bays up top, and you've got tons of space and two little platforms to work with.

What!? I don't have a pair of calipers with me at work, but using a scale, they're about .14 inches thick.

I just got an email from techonweb saying they are in stock, so if you are on backorder, check your email because they send an email asking if you still want the item before shipping.

good call, i totally thought it was just a confirmation that they're gonna ship it...

i would've been waiting weeks again...

Man, I just cancelled my order two days ago and ordered one for $20 more because they said that they weren't getting any until the end of the month. Oh well. Received the case today and it is awesome!!

Hey IceWind, how well can you see those lights in the 5.25" bay with the door closed?

I'm buying a p180 and am thinking about getting a fan controller that has glowing knobs, but I don't want a lot of light when I'm sleeping.

Thanks.

I would think it's still a tiny bit bright from coming out the vents on the side by the door (heh, I don't know how to say it). I can at least see my HD light going at night on my p180. The power led is a bit bright for me but it's not as bad as my GMC Neo Classic's power led so I'm deffinately satisfied. heh

Can't even see them unless you look directly through the side vents. You can't see the HDD light either unless it glows on a wall next to the case. Only light is the small blue one and its just perfect, not to bright, not to weak

When/where/what is that. Sounds like a really fun lan i would want to go to, PM me.

Okay that's excellent. Thanks for the help :)

I got a question for the 80mm blowhole.

It seems like the standard depth blowhole won't fit :( Where can I buy a slim 80mm fan?

Sorry if this was already covered... it's a huge thread!

Its 120mm, not 80mm

Well, I finally figured out how to get techonweb to ship me my case!

I had gotten their email asking me to confirm the thing, but all the link they gave me did was take me to my invoice where my only options were to stare at the thing or to click the cancel button. I emailed them and they shipped my order yay!

I wonder how well this case will fit 2 7800 GTXs.

What do you guys think (keeping in mind it is bigger then a 6800GT)?

I just went ahead and ordered one from TechOnWeb, since I've seen that they appear to be legit from the posts on here. I know they say they are backordered, which is fine, since I shouldn't be buying the damned thing anyway.... I'm bar-O-kee.

So I can now say I have one on the way-- even if it'll be a few weeks before it gets here.

:)

What's the consensus on the fans that come with the case? I've only seen brief mention of them in reviews on here-- Are they the "quiet"? Like, compared to others?

Also, when is there gonna be a [H]ard Review of this case up on the front page?-- with this kind of following, I know you guys are planning one.

I think it'll fit it just as well as any other case. From the few pictures I have seen of 7800s installed they are slightly shorter than an ATX motherboard. It looks like the biggest problem is that they might get in the way of IDE or other connectors on certain motherboards. But then again you already have your 7800s dont you? So you would know if they make anything hard to connect on the mobo.

I think the VGA duct would be a nice addition to keeping your new babies nice and cool though.
