Another Replacement for DE

I wonder what will happen if one format and restore the WHS OS, will it lose all DE info? Will installing the add-in again able to recover the data?

well since vail doesnt support the de, it would make sense to me that if u had a system drive failure, you should be able to just reinstall vail on the os drive. install the addin for drive pooling. then connect your drives. since the addin doesnt use the os drive as part of the pool, it would make sense for the addin to leave marker or system files along with your data on the drives so it would be easier to reintegrate them. of course i wont be that easy....im just hoping it is. unless de can work properly ill stick with whs v1.
it actually makes no sense for ms to even make vail without the de.there is no benefit for the target marketed home user whatsoever. im not sure what microsoft is smoking.

As you may be aware MS started looking at DE for implementation into Small Business Server. I'm under the impression that MS found something critical in DE that (1) couldn't be repaired, (2) cost to much to repair for the cost/benefit ratio, and/or (3) was going to be too much to support in a corporate environment.

Kind of like what happened with Outlook PST files in corporate environments. It grew into a monster.
 
drivebender looks like vapor as it stands right now. no feature list, no specs, no screenshots, just a website saying it wants to be a DE replacement and that a beta is supposedly starting soon.

That just confuses me that MS wouldn't want it. I only thought DE was a casualty to release schedules. If DE was too time consuming for them to work out, how well will all the other functions of WHS V2 work?
 
It remains to be seen how closely these are integrated into the OS. To fully match WHSv1 he would also need to provide backup of shared folders. If it does work as advertised and if data integrity is assured then the product is worth a lot more than $20.
 
Im also curious on how well these "DE replacement" add-ins will handle an OS drive failure. Didnt Microsoft announce that one new feature of Vail will be that it will have a built in function to backup the main OS drive? Or was that before DE was removed?
