So, I am wanting to buy a pair of headphones, but don't know what to choose. I want to keep my budget under 100 or about 100 range, but want something that has great bass because I like bass, and I love playing the bass. But, I also want something that will be good for both music and gaming. I have a X-Fi Platinum soundcard, so I think I will just hook it up to the 6,3mm/1/4" Jack Plug.

Not a hardcore audiophile, heck my speaker are X-530, I was going to get Z-5500, but they've been out of stock for a long time.
Also, would you recommend those particular headphones or Z-5500, I love bass, so I am a little torn...

Audio Technica's have some very nice, boomy bass. Perhaps you should look into the A500 or A700?

if you really want bass then go with the ATH A500's. If you can get your budget to 2x then the Beyer DT770 Pro/80's would be the way to go.

the Senn HD555/595 have great bass, but not a ton of it

Dude, others people recommendations are fine and good info but for speakers, headphones, keyboards, mice, monitors and women, you MUST try them out for youself and get what YOU like best.

Headphones are easy, go to Best Buy or Meglo Mart or wherever and actually listen to stuff you listen too on different ones till you find the ones you like. Comfort is also important in headphones. Lots of luck with the women.

Uh... what? Your telling him to go to Best Buy and demo the headphones they sell? I haven't ever been headphone shopping in Best Buy, but I bet they sell a load of crap. I can assure you they won't have any Audio Technicas or Beyerdynamics, which would probably fit his needs best. They MIIIGHT have a pair of Senns there, but can you even demo them?

Demoing stuff is important, but not as easy as walking into Best Buy... For his price range, it would be more effort than its worth. When it comes to headphones, people usually demo stuff at Head-Fi meets, and they are usually demoing much more expensive equipment than at $85 pair of headphones.

For the record, I am nearing $2000 in headphone gear, and I have not demoed a single thing before I bought it, and I have been nothing but smiles about every piece I have.

I prefer the Beyer DT770pro for gaming, bass, and movies over much of the similar priced headphone.
Not saying you will, but I would defiently put it on your list to consider!

Since this is your introduction to high end audio, they'll put a smile on your face. ^_^

Would you guys also recommend an amp for these headphones, thinking between HD485 and HD555. Will it be necessary? I wouldn't want to spend much for one if I did need one.

No, neither the Sennheisers nor AT's need an amp... but it would be a good idea of you went with the Beyers.

Ordered HD-555s. Damn my wallet hurts now :( I am a broke teenager, ah well I hope they get here by Friday.

As with so many other's wo get the HD555, let's see how long it takes until you upgrade.
Still, hope you enjoy them.

You would have been better off buying a used Beyerdynamic DT 770 for $130ish, its the bass-king of headphones.

Just got them, is the bass supposed to be slightly boomy/distorted? I've literally only have been playing them for about 5 minutes. Connected straight to the 1/4" Jack on the front face of my X-Fi card.
Is this when "Burn-in" starts making it crisper? The highes are still amazing though, cymbals are far clearer.

Seems he got the HD555, as did I to.
Just got mine now, been sitting at my door all day, but had to work.

What are you listening to that is boomy? First thing I did was classical, and wow are they nice.
I know the 555 take at least 300+ hours for "good" burn-in before settling into the "norm."

What were you listening to?

Adjusted the settings on the soundcard and it sounds better.

Haha, go figgure. Glad you fixed it. when you get into higher end audio, you can stop using all that EQ and whatnot.

Wow, you guys and burn in......... yikes.
I sometimes wonder how many times it's applicable to replace the words "burn in" with "user's ear adjustment".

:D

Burn-in with headphones is at least semi-plausible. They do have moving parts after all. As for cables and solid state amplifiers... xD

tower, what would be considered high-end, well in your opinion. I'd love the idea of not having to mess with the EQ, I still do, but I am just curious.

When I say that I mean you are starting to get into high end audio, a la you are going above what the average person would have.
The stuff the average people buy can sometimes REALLY use some EQ. Haha, my poor dad and his Altec lansing computer speakers........ the sub is just way to boomy with no adjustment, so that's when EQ is a life savior.

But what I would consider high end, probably starts at something with better sound quality than the HD650 (roughly speaking).

I found the "boomy" he was referring to on my pair.
Turned on some Red Hot Chili Peppers and could feel the bass a lot more.

It seemed though as the night went on that is started to settle down a bit, or maybe I was just adjusting to the extra bass. Will see tonight after having a day away from them and listen again.
