Another 4850?

I'm planning to make some upgrades to my rig . New motherboard with AM3 socket and maybe perhaps AMD Phenom II X4 955 with some DDR3 ram.

Now, should I get another XFX 4850 1GB for $130 and go crossfire or just jump on a single HD5850? HD5870 is little bit out of my price range.

if you can get a used HD4850 1GB for less than 80usd, then go for it. Otherwise, I would (personally) move to the single HD5850, which runs much cooler than two HD4850.

Which Mushkin 550W do you have?

Wouldn't be a smart idea to upgrade if the PSU isn't capable of handling the power.

What resolution? If you're using 1080p or higher, I would sell your current 4850 and try to find a 5850 on sell, or with a good rebate. If you're using a 1680*1050 or less, getting another 4850 will be fine.

Yeah I will likely play on or below 1680*1050. As far as the PSU goes , I can upgrade that too. This is the one I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817812002 .

Yeah you gotta upgrade the PSU as well. I see three red flags right off the bat:

- Only 28A on the +12V rail. Quality 550W PSUs have 40A to 42A. So yeah, that Mushkin is probably of poor quality.

- No APFC

- Inclusion of the -5V indicates that it's a really old design.

So yeah you're looking at a new PSU. I recommend this PSU for either GPU setups:
$65 - Antec NEO ECO 520C 520W PSU

For that low of a resolution. you might be better off with the GTX 460 1GB

Thanks I will definitely consider buying that PSU. And I really don't wanna go with Nvidia. I went through 6 or 7 cards and none of them were from Nvidia... just personal preference

I would go with a new GPU instead and try to sell the 4850 or keep it as a spare (you never know when a videocard will die). Something like a 5850 is consistently nearly twice as fast as the 4850, has got DX11, will use less power and take up one physical slot less than two 4850's, and will possibly receive driver updates and support for longer.

you can get an asus 4870 for 90 something AR. don't pay that for a 4850 1gb. other then that yeah, upgrade that PSU and drop a second card in. or if you find a deal then get a 5850 or a 460GTX

Here is the deal. I think I will stick with my 4850 until HD6000 series come out and then I will decide what to do... for now I will get a better AM2+ CPU and a nice new monitor as I need one bad...

Good idea, monitors last a lot longer than video cards. For most of us, anyway. And a fast card will bottleneck on a slow CPU anyway.
