The crew at HotHardware got some footage of an AMD Zen / Vega system at CES running DOOM at 4K on Ultra settings. I gotta say, the system looks like it is taking care of business. Watch the video to see for yourself.

Doom runs pretty good on a potato though. And with it's built in DX12 and Vulkan, it's easy for an AMD GPU to hit 4K frame rates.

Hell my GTX 970 hit like 100fps on the thing without even trying.

Vega sounds like the real deal...Nvidia might actually have something to worry about for the first time in years...lets hope Vega lives up to the early hype

AMD might have been better off keeping some of the details under wraps as June is still 5 months away and Nvidia now has time to formulate a card to match up with Vega

I'd like to see something not Doom, that game runs 100+ FPS on a 7970 and a potato CPU with the new API.

If its worth something, they need to demonstrate it.
    To me this spells disaster.
It looks like they dare not test with a game that needs a bit of heft.

Well I guess my EVGA 780 is less than a potato. I need an upgrade badly but life keeps getting in the way of my gaming.

sigh, why do they always run games and show off fps? I want to see some benchmarks compared to other graphic cards.

as others have said -- you can get doom to run great on anything.

If they want to impress me, play some GTA5 @ 4K ultra settings and show the results or some BF1... doom is fun, but its not telling us anything we want to know.

I get 60 on Ultra @4k in multiplayer, but some of those later levels in single player get into the teens even with my 480 OC'd to 1350. Excited for a Vega that can get a sustained 60.

GTX1080 OC runs ~45fp to 60fps @ 4k where a Vega prototype just ran 60-75fps. That is one hell of a Potato.

You guys complaining about them using DOOM, and think it runs on a potato, are really short sighted and bias. The Geforce 1080 runs DOOM at 4k at 40 to 55 fps
. So Vega and Ryzen maintaining 60 fps and hitting 70+ is pretty damn good, and shows that it beats geforce's potato.

Nope depends on the level, the gtx 1080 can go above 60 fps on AVERAGE on some levels in Doom in Ultra preset and with nightmare settings.

Please look at reviews, this has been shown.

Nothing AMD has shown so far with Vega is conclusive, in this regard.

you opinion is noted  at least for the gaming, compute world, it's not going to happen. Too many other things involved. AMD definitly doesn't have the resources in the short term to make Vega viable, it might be the start of something else for Navi, but only a building block which is imaginary at this point .

With Radeon Pro SSG Vega is blazing new trails. Trails where nvidia cant follow. I forsee this 'revolutionary memory architecture' in Vega being very impactful. I think AMD will also grow in the professional market like they've done for the last 3 quarters in a row, but even quicker. So yeah gaming, professional and compute.

-It is well known that DOOM's "Vulcan" API is the only API so far that clearly favours AMD's GPUs. (*DX12 benchmarks is game-depended so far)
-So the fact that AMD chose to demonstrate VEGA using the only API that clearly favours them, combining with the fact that its performance was between 1080GTX & TitanX Pascal, is discouraging news for AMD in my opinion.
Their new and so long delayed GPU, manages to surpass 1080GTX at the only API that favours them!!
( Not something i would praise about, but on the other hand, creating hype for no reason is something that doesn't surprise me considering it's standard AMD's policy for long time now ..... )

Nvidia can always make something a little faster than AMD, only real issue is price.

if AMD wont go nuts and sell these and a reasonable price it might be worth it.

Here's the problem. At the moment it looks likely to be a more costly product compared to full GP104 as implemented in the GTX 1080. In order for it to disrupt current pricing it's almost certainly going to have to come down to AMD willing (and able assuming cost floor) to accept much lower margins. If it is only arguably faster and not clearly faster than GTX 1080 then would make the situation worse. Since Maxwell it's been Nvidia basically effectively setting price ceilings for AMDs products.

Another thing to think about -- is if AMD wants to really kick some ass, they will have to beat nvidia in more than one game.

A GPU/API that's only good for a handful of games? No thanks AMD.

If they want my money they are going to have to impress me with game I play, not just the ones favored by Vulkan. If Vega turns out to be more powerful than a current 1080, that's great. Problem is soon as they drop their fancy 1080 killer, nvidia will just say "whooops, what do we have here, a 1080ti, that now makes Vega look silly"

I'm pretty locked in for the next year or two anyway with my 1070 @ 1440p with sexy results, so I'm looking forward to a good battle. Best thing that happens: people get options and maybe a nice price war will break out.

3 quarters? hah nvidia got to where they were in the professional market by laying years and years worth of work making inroads to enterprise level. 3 quarters is nothing when it comes to establishing a long term embedded dominance in a market.

That was back in May with old drivers and OpenGL, under Vulkan a GTX 1080 can sustain 60fps+ in Nightmare and 4K, my GTX 1070 can do 80 fps at 1536p NIGTHMARE quality, imagine what can 1080 do at 4K?

Well, it's not like the 1080Ti is going to come as a surprise, to anybody, least of all to AMD. I mean what are we expecting? Performance 10% short of a Titan while being 85% of the price? There or there abouts?

Will AMD have positioned Vega to cope with such a card? We'll find out in a few short weeks.

[H]ard prophet here. Here is my prophecy:

Nvidia already has a card that can match this performance. It's called the Titan X. The same f***king thing happened last time when everyone was jerking off over the GTX 980 and how amazing it was and how AMD MIGHT beat it with Fiji, but nobody freaking opened their eyes and realised that the Titan class cards ALWAYS get rebranded as a Ti. As soon as the 980Ti came out, nobody gave two sh**ts about the 980, and the FURYX could not compete with the rebranded Titan X AKA the 980Ti.

People are going so crazy about Vega MAYBE beating the 1080, when in truth, as soon as the Pascal TitanX is rebranded as the 1080Ti, nobody will give two sh**ts about wether AMD is faster than the old and busted 1080.

The question we need to ask is "Can Vega beat the Pascal Titan X?"

    My potatoe destroys the game

mehh 2x XFX 290x DD crossfire on a 5760x2160 display with everything set to nightmare (vulkan api)
    I usually run 30fps

at 2380x1080 ish (2:1 aspect) good 60 fps (where i frame limit it at)

I would expect this new chip to hold it a a solid 120 fps at 4k.

Note: I doubt they had nightmare set because you need 8Gbi of video memory
Note: Set the gpu display to nightmare then we could see some useful information.

I think it is worth mentioning that Vega is a departure from GCN that worked so well with Vulkan and it is unknown how that influences performance under DX12 / Vulkan for this generation. We can't really say that Vega will keep advantage in such and such tech, it may very well happen that performance of tile based rendering will fall much more in line with Nvidia in various engines. AMD using Doom in benchmarks may as well say more of the state of drivers having optimizations for this game and not others since the change in architecture is so big. Almost every AAA title that comes out forces new driver update that has game specific optimizations so I suppose that they are not done for new cards and they are still working on tuning. It seems they have a few months before Vega goes on sale, right?

Vega is still GCN, it just got 8bit added. And to use primitive shaders+geometry changes you need to code for it. Its like Freesync 2, another API to put on developers instead of doing it in hardware.

That is not an opinion that is based on facts, which I have linked you to already by HPC programmers.

Software Software Software, something AMD is lagging behind and the resources they need to fix that is not measured in quarters, its measured in YEARS as nV has been pumping money into their software solutions since the g80.

Just because a technology looks good and has features that can be usable, doesn't mean its going to be used right off the bat, adoption rates on new tech when software isn't available or software is working better or made for existing hardware (nV's), creates a major problem and slows it down to a crawl.

I meant that since AMD is now using tile based rendering that works better in some engines and worse in others, the performance in those engines may closer follow Nvidia performance than what AMD presented before. Probably Doom is a safe bet for them and already optimized so they presented that with other games to follow in the future on optimization pipeline - it takes time to squeeze performance out of the game so how can they present it now when they have a lot of backlog and what is more, the architecture is new and may require new way of tinkering to get the best out of the game. It often happens that optimization can get double digits of performance more out of the game and we are "squabbling" about even smaller margins here.
One more thing, AMD may not even want to show 5 months before premiere what those cards can really do just for Nvidia not to have an answer ready at day 1. Even few weeks or months of increased sales can help at the start.

On that/similar map the 1080 with same setting is running anywhere from 60fps to 78fps.
Was in the last 11mins of the vid linked by Pendragon: https://hardforum.com/threads/vega-countdown-has-appeared.1921304/page-12#post-1042738780

Depends just how well optimised the current driver-game is for Vega; pretty sure though that AMD would had the Intrinsic Shader Extension working fully for the Vega card.
In theory Vega could get more performance from the new alternative primitive shader but that will not happen often due to the level of expertise and development time it requires from the game/rendering engine coders as this is all on them and not AMD/driver now.
    Cheers
