AMD Next Generation ATI Radeon Eyefinity Technology

I hope that Kyle is as happy to publish as I am of seeing this article. This is the way is meant to be played.

Anyways, when are these guys going to figure a way to make the LCD screens integrate seamlessly? For me is quite annoying watching the bezel get in the way of the image when using many monitors. I think this new technology justifies that they get that feature on. LCD displays with removable bezels to integrate in a multi-monitor screen.

No thanks on any size of bezel. 2mm still isn't thin enough to be overlooked while gaming (only speaking for myself here people).

What this does get me excited about is the following:

1) These cards have got to be absolute monsters, performance wise. I've been looking up leaked specs over the past few days and people are saying these things are quadrupling computations to like 2 - 4 gflops. It makes me wonder what ATi will be able to offer in the $75 to $100 price range.

The same thing they're offering now: the 4770, which has 800 stream processors. The upper mid-range will have around 1400 stream processors ($300), and the high-end will feature 1600 ($400).

With no competition to speak of, ATI's high-end parts can actually sell for $400 this time around, so they won't be trickling-down performance increases unless Nvidia gets into a price war.

2) If they can pump out graphics chips with this kind of horsepower it get's me excited to see what they'll be sticking in the next xbox. By the time xbox 3 comes out they're going to have something even more powerful.

That's something I'm looking forward to - a console that really can deliver 1080p graphics! But we'll have to wait for another process generation.

The power consumption has been pegged at 170w for a 5870, and when you add-in the heat from the processor and board logic, you'd need water cooling to remove that much heat from a console-sized package.

It could certainly happen though, I don't think the next XBOX will be out anytime soon.

I just can't understand why they are doing this now... it's easy to implement comparing to most other innovative technologies. Maybe the Radeon 5xxx series isn't that of a big step compared to the 4000 series, so they have to push for new eye catching marketing ideas

It's more than welcome thought ... at last :)

Think about what kind of performance is required to run at such a high resolution though, it aint no cakewalk.

crysis will still be the ultimate game to benchmark, we still wont be able to play it at optimal levels because now we have to triple the resolution, heh.

We just saw a next-gen game engine running a 3x1 Eyefinity setup, and it looked and ran great using DX11.

This will sell a ton of cards and displays.
gaming experience by adding more screens?
it simpy is the best ever gaming addition.
I am so looking forward 3 screen gaming:D

This is some nice stuff, I gotta say the 1x3 would be a great setup for me personally. But don't discount the 2x3 setup. It could even work with a FPS if it was possible to get the game crosshair to move away from where the screens separate. With the crosshair being located at the middle of either the top or bottom row center screen. The extra row could either be on top or below depending on where the player wants more vision.

Best case you could even move the crosshair to any location on any monitor using a quick key+mouse combo. Having a crosshair in the center of the screen isn't what you always want in every situation because it leaves you blindsided. It would be nice to have this control on a single monitor system too, so there would be no reason why developers shouldn't implement it in all games as a standard feature. Everyone wins some.

I know some games (halo 3....) put the crosshair slightly below center, since that's more "realistic"

This is probably the stupidest major selling point I've ever seen.

It looks absolutely atrocious to have those massive gaps in the screen, and this also unnecessarily increases the horsepower to run games since that high of a resolution can't be perceived at the distance you'd have to sit to see the whole setup. It's an impractical experience that won't be very impressive. And yes, many of the low tech games right now will work with it, but what will you do when the next Crysis/Arma 2 comes along? Either you can't use your massive setup to play it, or you're stuck with low settings.

I have a traditional HTPC setup and there's no way I'd trade it for this. My 50 inch pioneer elite plasma has better black levels, better colors, smoother image movement, NO GAPS, and is just an all around better monitor than a 6-LCD frankenstein. At 1920x1080 with 4x AA, I've never considered the resolution inadequate. In fact, the image looks a bit smoother than it would at the same resolution on a LCD since plasmas seem to offer somewhat of a natural AA effect with being able to adjust sharpness to a proper level. And I'll never have to worry about an alternative setup for the high-end games that can't run at an unnecessary resolution.

For the best experience, go HTPC, grab yourself a nice 50-60 inch 1080p plasma and surround sound system, and pick up the TrackIR 5 peripheral. Playing games like HAWX, GRID, Flight Simulator X, and Arma 2 on a 50 incher with TrackIR is nothing short of amazing.

crysis will still be the ultimate game to benchmark, we still wont be able to play it at optimal levels because now we have to triple the resolution, heh.

The ultimate test: Can we finally play Crysis at max detail at high resolutions with reasonable frame rates, without spending a small fortune? Can't wait for more details about the cards.

okfine, but how about a pic OF THE [H]ARDWARE????

not that I'm implying ATI would pull a 'smoke & mirrors' trick but to demonstrate my point here's a pic off me setting the new land speed record at Bonneville last week

VROOM! ______(((((O---O>______

I recently reinstalled Quake 1, and I noticed something in that game that I think could be a problem for Eyefinity: texture quality.

I was running a Quake 1 mod (tenebrae) that added bump mapping, colored lighting, nice shadows, ansiotropic filtering, and all that nice stuff, but the textures still looked awful even from afar. Will current games that play on this kind of a setup have the same problems? I can't imagine WoW's textures hold up very well on a 3' by 6' setup. This may not be a real issue, but it makes me wonder. Also, if you need higher res textures for better games at resolutions of 7600 by 3200 will the card have the bandwidth for that? If not, can a CF setup add the extra needed bandwidth?

Kyle, any thoughts on this?

the low end is supposed to have up to 3 monitors support too, right?
if this is true, this should sell thje lower end cards like hot cakes to universities and other research institutes needing 1 high resolution display for certain programs. This would allow more money to go into the monitors being used as well because less money would need to be spent on making custom wall displays at huge resolutions

not sure how texture quality relates to resolution? As far as I can tell it's just like playing a game at 1920x1200 vs 1680x1050, albiet on a much larger scale. Getting the same quality on a bigger resolution requires more work...but that's how graphics have always worked...

Can't believe no one said anything about [H] guys being first with detailes from the presentaiton Awesome job guys keep it [H] :)

I'm unsure how exactly you know that anything above 3 monitors is "a waste for gaming", as you've never tried it. Looking at the pictures there, the 6+ monitor setups, while admittedly expensive and more of a dream, is sickening. I would absolutely love to have this setup, and the "niche" market may become more broad because multi-monitor gaming now appears to be a lot easier.
You do realize that High-End PC gaming is a niche field to begin with and you're a very small crowd in the terms of the global aspect. Throw in 3 monitors now and you just made that niche field into something even smaller. When more and more developers going console first and PC second do you really think this is something that will attract people to go out and buy 3 monitors in today's economy?

The tech is interesteding don't get me wrong, but when consoles are getting cheaper shouldn't the PC side of things follow the economic struggles as well? Ironically ATi really wants to seperate PC gaming vs Console gaming. With this intro of Eyefinity, they surely got that hands down. Now try to convince people that 3 monitor gaming is the way to go in today's economy!

here is a pic of the video card. seems like there is 6 display port

Christ, you're like a grandma saying "Today's Economy". Is that really your excuse to not buy a new video card? Chances are, if you're paying as much money as these cards are going to cost, you're not hindered by "today's economy" (which I say is fine, and it's attitudes like yours that are holding it back) so what's 300-400 more for a pair of monitors to match up to your third one? Also, nobody is twisting your arm to purchase this card.

Click here and try to understand that PC gaming isn't totally console first. It's gonna be tough to comprehend, but there's 100's of PC Exclusive games with very taxing graphics on that list.

Edit: And the WOW addicts are going to be 100 percent about this if they can span more screen area, I don't play wow, but I there's a mere 10,000,000 people that do., plus there's only about 145,000 CS/CS:S servers now. Doesn't seem like very many at all I guess.

lol! Once again, someone who thinks High-End PC Gaming is pushing the industry! lol... A niche is a niche, no matter how you candy coat it. By the way I'm running a GTX 295 and a i7 at 4.0GHz. The point is not about "what I can afford", the point is trying to convince people who aren't already pegged into the High-End PC gaming to drop more money. If ATI's goal isn't to garner new consumers then fine, they succeeded. But if they are trying to get more people into high-end PC gaming. Telling them to buy 3 monitors let alone 6 won't work. Maybe lookup business 101?

TRULY F*&#KING AMAZING!!!! I'm not sure why the majority of gamers aren't getting this, but the horsepower from these cards are absolutely sick!! Think about it, we still require a 4870x2 or 285gtx or better to game on 2560 x1600 (max details) resolutions. They just showed a setup with (ONE) card driving a DX11 title at unheard of resolutions on today's modern systems. Some of the flack that Kyle recieved about the lynfield chips and p55 chipset review totally suppresses any doubts about configuring that setup as one of these cards would obliterate the performance in most upcoming titles. All I can say is that PC gaming just got one big ass boost. Now the developers need to harness all that horsepower with uber eye-catching graphics.:D

I might give it a try on my Pioneer KRP-600A, however I'm still looking forward to play games in their full 8Mpixel glory on this setup.

Playing on a TV is more the domain of consoles though.

You'd think that, but I prefer the plasma for everything that isn't a RTS. I have a decent quality 24 inch LCD but the image quality on the plasma is just so much higher that I can never go back. I can't speak on if the resolution will be enough for a 60 inch, but it's definitely fine for a 50 inch with 4x AA. At that point I'm perfectly happy with resolution/clarity and I'm only concerned with maxing settings/framerate.

I doubt these cards have the power to do what you'd really want to do with them anyway. The only thing I can think of is playing modded Oblivion with a ridiculous draw distance put in the cfg file. Being able to see all of these tiny/superfine details in the distance would be amazing, but it would choke the card. My SLI GTX280's, probably more powerful than a single one of these cards, can have a hard time with the mods/settings I already use, and with a ridiculous resolution I'd want the settings even higher to take advantage.

I've recently scaled down from a 32" panel for gaming to a 24" display...during intense gaming you need to be sat close to the screen to see small detail. If you have too large a panel much of the image is outside of your field of view when you are sat close to the screen or at least outside of the area of your vision which has most accuity.
So why the hell would I want to surround myself with more monitors which I can't see adequately.

To all those guys talking about spread sheets etc...this is obviously not aimed at those sort of applications which can be adequately multiscreened on much lower powered graphics devices.....this is aimed at multiscreening high power graphics such as hd video display and gaming.
But tbh outside of gaming types such as flight sims and driving games and those users that are particularly serious about them I'm afraid I don't see the niche either but I am predominately an FPS gamer. Also who wants to see a hd video divided into 24 different sections....I say again... WHY?

Meh, monitor edges get in the way... now we need some monitors without borders. Good article and thanks [H]

I'm just not [H]ard enough to buy 3 monitors... would rather have one big one.

I'm just looking forward to single display results. If 4 cards (Quadfire?) can run 24 displays at native resolutions for a flight simulator, I would love to see the results just one of these cards can produce?

The prize in the sky is which card is used in the demo's? 5870? 5870X2? Any pictures floating around on the "back side" of the card to determine which one is being used?

Of course this technology will exist on lower end cards too. This is just a demonstrator for actual gameplay

And whether you see it important or not, there will be people out there who want to have the latest and greatest and having 3+ will give it to people

I don't get why all the people out there have this hate. It's not like its taking away from other features - it's an ADDITIONAL feature! God, some fanboys out there... if this were Nvidia, they'd be talking about how this is the most revolutionary thing ever!!111  Just like how some see PhysX and CUDA right now as being... a niche

It's the 5870 only...

This is pretty cool. Now when mainstream LCDs have little to no bezel this will be awesome to utilize.

Yes it is a feature...but not perhaps the most useful one or the one most likely to attracted the attention of the majority....certainly not the feature I would have chosen to demo their new product.....just hope that's not the best they've got.

Read the article!

It even states that they're showing specs and stuff tomorrow

Oh and:

BTW, I don't know who is crazy enough to get 24 monitors (I'm sure someone is [H] enough to though...)... but I gotta say, these pics of Q3A with a railgun flying by your head is definitely immersion:

Did read the article....just started yawning at all the multi screen crap...it's just totally impractical for most. Will look forward to more detailed specs tommorow though.:)

I don't get where all the whining is coming from. Lots of people actually spend a couple hundred bucks on a Matrox THTG just to enable a basic capability like this.

This is included in the graphics card (essentially free) and has none of the limitations (like Max 1680x1050 resolution at 57Hz). THTG just became a dead product.

See this thread for a boatload of people that already have triple monitors, but no TH gaming.
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=862341&page=751

Many have setup that would not even work with THTG even if they wanted to do it. Now with their next graphics card, BAM! TH Gaming on their 30" setups.

You can bet a lot of them will be going ATI on their next graphics card.

This is the biggest feature improvement in quite some time.

Forgot the part about this technology doesn't support crossfire YET. That means this only a 5870 pushing 6 monitors. (speculation) If that is so, I could only imagine a 5870x2.:D

Kyle, any thoughts on this?

Do you really think the game was developed 15 years ago with running these huge resolutions? Do you realize the bandwidth limitations at the time it was created?

Unless the textures have been replaced in the game I think my expectations would be for them to look like ass.

You could put bumpmapping on Donkey Kong too, but it would still only be Donkey Kong. Know what I mean?
