AMD dual core price drops..Just when you thought they couldn't get any cheaper right?

Got an email today from AMD anouncing another price drop on Oct 8. They didn't give prices though, which is the bad part.

I have noticed a few sites already started dropping price so who knows how far they will go, but you can figure AMD wants everything old to be out of the channel asap.

Should the "Black" drop into say the $100.00 price range many would have to give is some condideration. I know I would.;)

Wow...I'd definitely think about picking one up depending on the prices. Kind of like the old Athlon XP days. 2500+ was $85 or so and clocked right to 3200+ speeds. Comparable Intel CPU was $150 or so.

i probably will get shafted,i just bought a 6000+ rats:(

Depending on where you bought your CPU. Some places do have a 30 day price guarantee. So if in that range and the place you bought your CPU, you may just get a refund on the difference.

hmm....tempted to upgrade my 1.5 month old 4000+ to a 6000+..

I'll give u $20 for it :D I didn't expect another drop but should have seen this coming with the blackbox in [H]otdeals going for $99

they just arent worth squat now huh.....paid $335 USD w/tax to Monarch about 2 yrs back(?) for a CCB1E Opteron 165 !!!

Damn how things have changed around here, with people openly entertaining the idea of unlocked multi'd X2's @ 2.6Ghz for a single Franklin

Wow...

Dear god the resale of my x2 6000 keeps getting worse.
The main reason I buy bargain hardware, especially CPUs and video cards, is because it drops in value so quickly.

The last few CPUs I bought were all bargain basement (in reverse order, all retail except the 925): $50 P-D 925, $25 A64 3800+ AM2, $20 A64 3200+, $80 E4300, $100 X2 4400+ EE (included a GF6100 motherboard), etc. I like cheap hardware and overclocking it. :D

Well I got my x2 6000 at the last price drop and I was hoping to see it stay at or near the $169 I paid for it until I got a look at the phenoms.

I'm all about cheap hardware too, but its getting pretty ridiculous.

:-/

I'd consider getting a 6000+ even if it doesn't overclock much if: 1) it's the 89W version coming out this quarter and 2) it's around $100. That's not as crazy as it sounds. It's in the realm of possibilty that Fry's could have a 6000+/motherboard combo for $120-$130 on black Friday. Dump the motherboard and that leave ~$100 CPU.

i remember paying 150 bucks for my A64 3200+ when it first came out 3? 4? years ago. i thought that was a hell of a deal considering the old socket A Bartons were still selling for almost 200.00.

and now? a damn X2 6000+ costs about that much...

Looks like I picked the right time to upgrade from my 4200+ AM2 (next Friday). :D

I was going to get a 5600+ but it definately looks like I'll have to reevaluate that decision, especially since it's a distinct possibility that I will walk away with a 6400+ BE for the same or less as a 6000+ now. I can't wait.

....

Stupid AMD and their price drops :(

On the bright side, I could pick up an x2 5000 BE for my wife's comp build and see how it does.

My 4000+ is staying right where it is. Price drop or no, this rig is getting a Phenom x4 once they're available. And I don't want to have to question my upgrade when it's time: "Should I get a 2GHz Quad-core, or keep my 3GHz duallie?"

Is this actually true?
I already noticed about a month ago they dropped like 10 dollers. Its gonna drop more again? I have all my computer parts but I held out on the cpu. Now that I hear this black box 5000 and price drops im freaking out becuase now might as well wait. Im considering the 6000 or black box 5000. Ill take the 6000 though if it drops to 160 cdn.
I Dont think i can wait any longer though!

Finally found a link. IT actaully is a 10 doller price drop.... wow. May be the one that has already taken effect.

Amen to that!

Heh - I paid $330 for a skt 754 3400+ Clawhammer just as the skt 939 parts were being released. To quote Dylan; "the times they are-a changin'!"

I just brought a 4200 ffor 75 bucks...I wonder if I can get a price match from newegg for the difference since its been less than 30 days..

One thing about resale that I have found interesting is that there are many stupid people on ebay.

When I bought my opteron 180 it cost the same as the 4800. For the last month or so, the opteron 180s have been selling for 150 (used) to 180 (new) on ebay. The 4800s have been selling for 240 - 400 dollars. Yes, 400 dollars for a 939 4800. 11 months ago the 4800 cost 230 dollars. Now it is apparently worth 300-400 new.

have the price drops occurred? my potential 5200+ is still sitting at $123.99 :(

oh...i see from the chart they have :D

I was looking for a socket A 3200+ a few months ago on ebay thinking that I'd find one ridiculously cheap and to my surprise some were selling for around $105 used.

If you really wanna get an idea for how crazy ebay is, watch the comic book market. When Captain America died copies were selling for over $100 the day of release on ebay. Now they're back down to a normal $10-$25.

I thought about getting the 4800 for a while back then. I got the better CPU and now I get half as much money when I resell it. I wish I knew better at the time.

That happens pretty much any time a socket 'dies' - the top 1 or 2 model CPUs that could be put in it skyrocket in price. Heck, around the time of the Socket 939 launch, I was looking at Pentium-III parts for an old build - the 1.13ghz Coppermine chip for that socket ran for $500+. I guess people didn't really realize you could built a whole new system - CPU, ram, and new mobo for that price? Or, more likely, just didn't want to hassle with an OS reinstall. A CPU upgrade is a drop-in replacement, while mobo upgrades usually require the OS get nuked.

Ain't that the truth. I sold a 3200+ Barton 400mhz FSB CPU for over $100 not more than 6 months ago. It probably isn't worth more than $30 in terms of current CPU power.

Not exactly AMD official, but it's a good indicator of what you can expect across the board.

Those look like the prices Newegg has. Dang, I'm wondering if I should upgrade my 3600+ Brizzy because 1. I can't get to 3 Ghz, actually stable is more like 2.6 or maybe 2.7 GHz. Also, i hate that you can't get ACCURATE temp readings.

I did and i've not even tried to overclock this 6000+ and I can tell a definite difference in performance over my x2 3600. Temps are higher in my case with this 125w monster, but I've also put the system into a smaller case as well, and I can at least use a temp monitoring program to ensure my temps aren't ridiculous.

AMD has FAR too many pricepoints and processors in the AM2 line. I expect as soon as phenom hits most of the X2 line will vanish just like socket 939 vanished.
And yes, I know people don't want to hear that and I'll probably get flamed, but look at the list.

Why would you get flamed? That's exactly what's going to happen.

Isn't that what happens with every socket change? Its inevitable in my mind. People get mad at AMD because they've changed sockets more often than intel, but both manufacturers go through socket changes.

well, to be honest amd does wipe their whole line out faster because of the company financial and production limitations, while intel is still producing those lower end parts for significantly longer.

AMD was forced toward Super Socket 7 as a stopgap after Intel abandoned development. That led to Slot A, Socket A, Sockets 754, 939, Socket AM2 and eventually backwards compatible AM2+ and AM3, and in the future Socket F. The list for Intel is slightly longer.

I wouldn't say "forced" to Socket 7 - AMD could easily have made a new socket, themselves.

Rather, they took advantage of a market opportunity. Intel launched Socket 7 as 'the next big thing', and then dropped it after just a few processor models. A Super Socket 7 upgrade allowed you to keep your old Intel CPU, and put a new mobo under it that had AGP support (remember when AGP was new?), then be able to later upgrade to AMD CPUs that would support it.

Through a simple jumper setting, AMD did eventually keep up with SS7 all the way to 600mhz. Not bad for a socket that Intel debuted at 75mhz!
