AMD Demonstrates DirectX 11 Graphics Processor

Maybe I am remembering this wrong but I believe I've read several OCP articles in the last couple of years about how the nvidia and ATI chips architectures have been based around stream processors for several years now. Does this mean that they are entirely stream processors and that there are no DX10/DX11 specific functions in silicon? If so I am wondering how there are DX11 specific GPU's. It seems odd to me that the cards are programmable enough for NV/ATI to do physics on them, yet not programmable enough to handle the next rev of DirectX without needing a "new chip".

On reflection, that is a good question as to what is actually changing in the hardware.

I mean, if the time of 'fixed function shaders' is over, and 'stream processors' are soooo flexible that they could be told to...render a 3d game...or...accelerate HD content decoding...or...simulate protein folding...or...re-encode compressed video content...or...perform complex physics calculations...or...(etc)

...one has to wonder what about 'DX11', exactly, needed new hardware that could not just be programmed for the existing cards to do?
 
So did anyone else watch that demo and wish it was the next Dungeon Keeper? I could totally imagine those Froblins being the imps...
 
dx11 is a superset of dx10, it pretty much brings refinements to what dx10, and 10.1 did, and adds support for SM 5.0, dx11 also brings support for OpenCL, an industry wide support for GPGPU, something we've really needed to stop nvidia from showing CUDA on 90% of their hardware slides :p

Tesselation unit is the holdup, it is slightly different in dx11, compared to how ATI implemented it in previous generations

Probably sooner than we think, since Win7 looks like it will be a hit and widely accepted, unlike Vista was which made game developers more hesitant to make a DX10-based game.

AFAIK It's possible to implement any DX11 features via CUDA on nvidia hardware (or its equivalent for ATI), but performance would negate the benefits.

If that is the case, then the older cards (with less stream processors) should just be "slower" but just as capable, thereby not forcing people to buy newer DX11 cards. Don't call it a GPU unless its forward compatible. That's like making me buy a new CPU to run DX11.
 
Anyways, at the end of it, looking at die size isn't any proof what the chip is going to hold since units within the chip aren't going to scale

RV670 at 192mm^2 to RV770 at 265mm^2 went up 38%.... but they crammed 2.5x more shaders, TMUs, redid the RBEs and look what happened... everything bad about RV670 was fixed and made better.

So if RV740 was 137mm^2 and this new chip is 180ish mm^2... its roughly a 30% incresae on what the RV740 has, which means that we have quite a range of what they can cram in there. Basically, they're keeping us in the dark on purpose and guessing
 
Of course there was picture of Evergreen die shot..it wasn't that accurate, but you could see that it would have completely different structure than RV770..

I think the other post was more accurate. More important than adoption of Vista, the console market size makes it unlikely for developers to spend too much time on DX10 (or DX11).
 
hmm. Well even with Dx11, are ppl even gonna care? Like other ppl said, we dont even use Dx10 that much, But also some ppl say 9 is easier to code and work with then 10, I mean dont get me wrong, 10 is great but 11 already? I mean com on, If 11 is use more than 9 then that great. :D

DX11 a superset of DX10/10.1... basically any game in development for 10/10.1 can apparently be ported to 11 pretty easily, hence it will be quicker than a DX9->10 transition since they're already coding for 10

Nvidia already has it's first DX11 chips taped out just like ATI. So they didn't show at computex, that means nothing really.

That was Fudzilla..ish rumour. There's nothing indicating that this rumour is true. Truth is that when AMD is launching their DX11 chips..Nvidia is launching budget level DX10.0 40nm chips. To make things worse this seems to be best case scenario for Nvidia

NVIDIA has already taped out GT300 A1..and that is highend DX11 :rolleyes:
 
Seems ATi has alot more experience with the architecture of the new cards and it's paying off. From everything i've read they seem poised to take the crown in the next round...hope it's the case. Will be nice to see Nvidia's price fixing asses knocked off that high horse they've been riding lately!

Nvidia is like that smartass in highschool that really needed a good ass whoopin to straighten em out :p

According to Fudzilla..ish sources = No sources. Same thing with Nvidia's 40nm DX10.0 stuff; only Fudzilla is reporting how they would be ready to launch slightly after AMD's DX11 stuff..
